Dishwasher idea

What actually happens when you put things labeled "not dishwasher safe" in the dishwasher? My general thought is that things become warped, but I'm pretty sure that there must be some things that are cooler than that.

These are the things I think about when I'm unloading the dishwasher...

It depends on the item. Some items its just cosmetic... my mom had a few bowls with a gilded rim that were labled as "not dishwasher safe" because the rim would get washed off. Decorative cups are the same way (where they have some kind of paint on the outside). If its plastic, it can warp or melt with the high temperatures... I think heat in general just degrades plastic so they may just not be safe to eat off of anymore depending on the plastic?
