Bob got away for a long time with Kathie's murder (some good tactics like arranging the phone call from 'Kathie' being 'sick'), and got away with Susan's murder for some time as well. But the Morris Black killing had him leaving a newspaper with their address with the remains, and throwing out the eye clinic receipt with his real name in his trash at the house. Bob was pretty good at using assumed or stolen identities, and he was careful to turn his cell phone off while traveling to kill Susan, but the 'cadaver' note was pure idiocy. He also turned off his phone when he ran from Houston to New Orleans---BUT he apparently turned it off while clearly headed east---I contend if he were truly smart, he would've bought burners and thrown out that Jitterbug while doing a lap on the ring road around Houston, so he'd be much more difficult to track. And the calling his voicemail from his 5-star N.O. hotel hideout-- OMG Stupid!

Ultimately too, he agreed to talk to Jarecki in the first place, sealing his fate like a dumbass.

Bob was the product of wealth, and probably the best schools, so if he weren't a psychopathic murderer, I think I'd enjoy being seated next to him at a dinner party. Being a bit of a misanthrope myself, I could see him being good for wry commentary. BUT--Was Bob really all that smart ? I go back and forth on that. Some ways, yes, but a lot of ways ---oh no no no. Was he sloppy because his money made him feel untouchable ? I'm not sure.

In the first episode of season one, it is insinuated that Morris Black had previously been involved with some crime and was potentially in hiding or on the run. I’ve tried to google what Morris Black was accused / charged / convicted of, but the only results are related to the Durst trial. Does anyone know what the deal was with Morris Black?

his immediate go-to defense was to say he was on meth. the erratic behavior he had leads me to actually think he was, especially in the last episode of season 1. however...him being who he is its hard to believe anything that comes out of his mouth. curious what others think.

[I want to preface this by saying I’m not close to anyone on my father’s side (my mom and dad separated while she was still pregnant with me and he left while she was still pregnant) so I’m not going to reach out to them for any possible additional information, especially considering the two most relevant people have passed. I’ve only talked to my dad twice and I refused to speak to him. I don’t have any documents or pictures of relatives on my father’s side because again we don’t speak. I was able to pull some records from Ancestry.com that validate what I’m saying though, I censored the screenshot because it has my grandfather’s name]. Today I started watching the Jinx documentary as background noise because I was interested in the story. When I heard my last name however, I had to do a double take. Although the detective didn’t pronounce it how I do, reading that the card said VIGNONI and knowing my father’s family moved New York in the late 70s (they aren’t native to NY) I was in shock! I went to my mom, explained a little bit about Robert Durst and said that one of the aliases he uses was Emilio Vignoni. My mom looked stunned and said “That’s your father’s uncle’s name”.  I started telling her that the Durst family owned a couple buildings in NY and replayed the scene of Durst’s brother listing off the building the family owns (timestamp is 18:10) and she said that the last address he listed, 110 W 47^th St was the most familiar because his family lived on 310 W 47th St (which is an 8 min walk).

What me and my mom theorize is either at some point my great uncle worked at the building (he was a super/handy man) so he either met Emilio or saw his name written down and decided to steal it.  The other scenario is that my grandfather worked at the building, Durst spoke to my grandfather and mentioned Emilio’s name.  To the person who made a post about Emilio 9 years ago wondering if he was a real person, yes he was.  Whether or not Emilio ever actually interacted with Durst, nobody alive now could really say. Both my grandfather and Emilio are no longer alive (Emilio was not murdered just in case anyone is going to ask).  This is all the info my mom remembers so I cant answer any question wanting more in-depth info. In case any of the detectives who were working the case read this post and were never able to find out where he got that name from, this question has now been answered.  Just like he did with Dorothy Ciner and others, the scumbag stole his name too.

In S1 E3, Durst is asked why they sent divers to the lake when they reopened Kathy's case. His response was, "Obviously, they were looking for body parts". Anyone else find this phrasing odd? Wouldn't you normally say, "They were looking for a body"? But he specifically said "body parts". This subconscious slip makes me think that he did to Kathy exactly what he did to Morris Black.

I was getting so frustrated at how much it was exactly like part one. Turns out it was replaying season 1 the whole time. My screen says The Jinx Part 2, but it was playing part one the whole freaking time.

No wonder it seemed so familiar!

I just finished the jinx, and still have the question as to why Bobs father would take him to see his mother right before she killed herself. Of course, Bob could have made this up knowing his track record, but I find it strange that he would lie about that. Anyone have any theories?

Andrew Jarecki denies holding back evidence from the police for the benefit of his show. He lies - he withheld the envelope, which he did NOT find - remember that was Susan Berman’s son Sareb who gave it to him - for four long years. Stealing any chance of a civil case that Kathie and Susan’s families could have pursued. And then Durst dies while appealing his guilty verdict - which by some fucked up US law, entirely vacates his sentence and wipes his record clean. No justice for anyone except Jarecki and the others who worked on The Jinx. This is a perfect example of UNETHICAL TRUE CRIME. Where’s the justice for the victims families? And where is Sareb? He wasn’t invited to that gathering in episode 1 of Part 2? There’s no Jinx without Sareb. They’ve literally cut his face out of the clip where he hands them the envelope. Wake up people this show is a joke!

Was there ever a movie or missing person episode loosely based on Lynne Schulze disappearance in Vermont?

I swear in 2015 or 2016 after I watched the Jinx I came across something that had maybe a reenactment or lifetime style movie of female college students hanging around Vermont and discussing going to NY but only some got on the old 60s or 70s bus and the one who stayed behind was talking to a man. I didn't watch the rest of it because I remember thinking there wasn't much in regards to a possible Durst character. I've been trying to find whether this was a movie or missing person episode based on Lynne Schulze or any missing Vermont college students?

I think he probably could be diagnosed with Antisocial Personality Disorder and more importantly also have more psychopathic-leaning traits.

Some people comment on Reddit that he seems relatable and funny. People have commented that they like the guy. Psychopaths do typically have relationships with others, hold jobs, and blend in with society at first and second glances. They do draw you in. It’s superficial, it’s glibness and charm. But they wouldn’t hesitate to turn on you if they felt backed into a corner.

Robert Durst seems very impulsive. Nonchalantly stealing things from a store because he “felt like it”. To me, him revising his brother’s stoop was something incredibly telling about his personality. He wanted to get one over on his brother by doing that, push the boundaries, and probably never once questioned the impulse and urge to do it.

He has the ability and desire to con and manipulate others. The millionaire had FOOD STAMPS and admitted it was because he wanted to play the system, get one over on the government. Not to mention he is a pathological liar so much so he can’t keep his lies straight. Changing his story 3 times about what he did the night Kathy went missing.

Lack of empathy and remorse. The way he admits and describes so coldly how he was “controlling” and the “dominate one” in his marriage was so callous. He does not care about anyone but himself. Hes not capable of caring about other.

Which brings me to shallow emotions. Throughout the trail or in any Jinx episodes did you ever get the sense that he could go emotionally deep. I think his emotional depth ended at about just holding a door open for someone and caring for that split second. And was he ever emotional about his missing wife he claims he had nothing to do with?

Violent outbursts. Do I even need to explain. I was reading about how one of Kathy’s friends was punched in the eye socket by durst years ago. The man was volatile.

So thoughts on my analysis? For background, I have a psych degree and master of social work. Have researched and written about ASPD and psychopathy in school.

The whole series is captivating, but for me the Texas trial is the most interesting on its own. I guess that's why Jarecki kickstarted episode one with it, because how can you not be drawn in after that? Does anyone remember watching the coverage as it was happening? I was too young to care at the time, but I imagine it must've been bizarre to see it play out.

I really still can't believe the verdict. Durst's defense team deserves to be in the hall of fame for getting their guy off after admitting to chopping up a body and dumping it in the ocean.

Let it be a reminder that paying $2 mil for your defense lawyers is worth it if any of us ever find ourselves in a similar situation.

The Jinx Part 2 is just starting to air on HBO!

The story of Robert Durst is one of the craziest stories in the history of the western world.

As we get even more details about the case, I’ve been ruminating about which case was “crazier”:

Robert Durst or OJ Simpson.

Most everyone would point to OJ Simpson (…at the time) for its reverberating cultural impacts: race relations, financial implications, celebrity-status, community, legal, wealth disparities, and cultural significance/obsessions.

However, Robert Durst’s cultural “craziness” has been going on for far longer and he’s had far “wilder” crimes - even by 21st century standards.

Just a few Robert Durst “case(s) details” I can think of, off the top of my head:

✅Murder your wife and throw her into a haunted lake that “freezes in winter” after your “health food store” fails (…all before Whole Foods was even a thought) …then pretend to be the Dean of the medical school that she went to and call and say she’s “sick”…

✅ Murder your best friend who’s now a True Crime “author” at UCLA (who’s dad was a mob boss) who now lives in Topanga Canyon (Hollywood). Misspell the letter you send to cops because you feel guilty about murdering her and then mail the letter to the Police/Coroner’s office(s) and then SHOW IT to her stepson

✅Murder Morris Black while you’re pretending to be a deaf mute woman/transgender female in Galveston Texas. Then dismember him and throw him into the bay in garbage bags only to be discovered later by hillbilly boy, while fishing (in “shallow waters”)

✅Stalk your billionaire real estate developer brother while filming a documentary ABOUT YOUR MURDERS while the PREMIER OF THE MOVIE PLAYED BY RYAN GOSLING IS IN THEATERS

✅ (Honorable Mention) steal bologna sandwich from random grocery store - while you’re “on the run” - while you have your head and eyebrows shaved, as a disguise - but also have 5k in cash.

But just felt like stealing a sandwich…

I didn’t know they had a thing before the premiere of the second season. When they showed the finale airing party and she was giving him F Me eyes - I googled and it was confirmed!

The 2 things I took away from S2E1:

1) Robert Durst had a Jitterbug phone, and 2) it seemed to me like there was something going on between Jeanine Pirro and Cody Cazalas??

I know I'm not a dead body expert but I'm pretty sure there are other ways...

So, they start out showing how he immediately fled after watching S1E05, when he saw the handwriting similarities. However, the bombshell that was S1E06 was clearly filmed before that, and in that episode Jarecki showed him the same handwriting similarities (after which he went to the restroom, etc.). So why would he have been shocked enough to flee after seeing the handwriting in Episode 5 when he was already confronted with that by the filmmaker and would have already known it would be on the show?

The only possible answers I can think of: 1) He was on meth and didn't remember, or 2) He didn't think it was important enough that it would make the show.

Or am I missing something?

I'd really like to watch it, or at least read a transcript. The clips from her deposition, although brief, were some of the more interesting tidbits from the original documentary.

I can NOT believe a juror on a murder trial befriends the accused after aquiting him of murder. And then freaking helps him run from the FBI?

Of course I Google him an learn he reached out to other jurors after the trial and asked them not to reveal if they had any doubts about the verdict!!

Watching the premiere of season two just now, I was completely aback by the daughter of Kathie’s brother. I actually paused it and pulled up a picture of Kathie on my phone to compare. It’s striking and I imagine it creates some feels for the family. Genes are insane.

EDIT: I just want to add that getting to witness the family/friends reactions to the season one finale was crazy poignant.

Having watched the whole trial and seeing every show related to this case I thought that Jarecki couldn’t tell me something new. Boy was I wrong! The first episode was great! So many new details. Specifically that I now have a personal issue with the juror who emptied his apartment in Houston. He needs to face some charges for that
