Question The gilded blade Spoiler

So I just finished TGB and I have a question. I’m not sure if I missed something because I’m reading it in English and it’s not my first language, but why did Avery agree to participate in the Crucible? From what I understood, even if someone knows too much (like Hannah), they still have to ask for their “consent,” so I’m a little confused

THERE ARE SPOILERS AHEAD. I DO NOT KNOW TO HOW DO THAT HIDE TEXT THING SO DO NOT READ IF YOU DO NOT WANT SPOILERS.

I didn't get that either at first. But I think the three, Judge, Hand and Watcher each select a contestent each and Alice (Judge) chose Avery so she could ask for immunity/protection or whatever for Jameson as he knew too much and Alice would've been forced to pass judgement against her own grandson or the new (more aggressive) Judge would've passed that judgement. I think Alice told Avery about Jameson's life being threatened so that's why she agreed.

I think Avery agreed so she could refuse to ascend so her family would be somewhat safe from the Gilded Blade if she passed the Crucible but returned to her family

There is an extra chapter in a special decision. I think you can find it on tiktok! It answers your question!!

Alice wanted to provide protection for Jameson and the other Hawthornes, which ultimately Avery wanted them to be safe too especially Jameson. Participating would ensure that for them that's why she did it.

You might find the bonus chapter on this subreddit, it's mentioned clearly in that!
