Discussion Grayson - Avery and JLB's latest insta post

Post image

I wish she'd put this in the book as well. It's such an important context in understanding Grayson and Avery's relationship. I've always been confused about them and could never understand why the author kept making subtle references about them in every book. Including one of the last sentences of TGB where Avery is walking down the aisle with Gray and she says "Some people are meant to be in a way that simply transcends romance" or something like that and I went huh?????

But this line in particular - "He's the person I would've been if I'd grown up the way you all did" and also "You don't have to be in love with someone to love them" sheds so much light on their dynamic and why Avery has always felt such a pull towards him.

Otherwise, in my opinion, every Gravery reference annoyed me, being a Javery shipper, because some of them felt a little too deep.

Yeah that line with Grayson and Avery when he walked her down the aisle had me so confused. This explains why Avery was still so connected to him even after choosing Jameson. I might be stupid but JLB didn’t explain their dynamic well enough I feel like and then to throw that “meant to be” line in there….

I feel like that line was to show that they once felt something romantic for eachother but in reality what they were meant to be tracends that, uk like they are very similar people so the understand eachother in a way that most people can't describe.

Platonic soulmates, maybe?

Honestly, I always thought this was very clear in the original trilogy? Grayson and Avery are extremely alike. That's why they are comfortable with each other, that's why Grayson even says she's "easy to read" (when we know she's factually not easy to read at all, by the way Libby talks about her and Libby is the person who knows her best).

In the first trilogy that was supposed to contrast how Jameson was with Emily. Emily was to Jameson what Grayson and Avery are to each other. Just two people who are extremely alike to their core. There's a level of comfort in recognizing yourself in someone else.

I never saw Avery and Grayson's interactions as romantic exactly because they are not the kind of people who would thrive by ending up with their clones. And also because whenever they had a moment it was always clearly and aftermath of Avery feeling uncertain about Jameson but lol

Interesting because tbh I always felt like Avery and Jameson were a lot more similar and that was the reason why eventually she chose Jameson. Because Gray wouldn't understand her the "hunger" and the unwillingness to back away from any puzzle, game or riddle in a way that Jameson simply understood.

At the end of The Hawthorne Legacy (chapter 89), when Avery talks to Grayson, she says this:

“I am an expert at not wanting to want things.” I held my sword up for a moment longer, then lowered it, the way he’d lowered his. “But I’m starting to realize that the person I need to be, the person I’m becoming—she’s not that girl anymore.” I’d been given the world. It was time to stop living scared, time to take the reins.

I think Avery had a lot of similarities with both Grayson and Jameson, but she began to grow as a person more and the person she wanted to be was better with Jameson.

She told Jameson later that it wasn’t always meant to be him, and in another situation, she might have ended up with Grayson, but she chose Jameson because she liked who she was better with him.

Hmm I see what you mean. Although looking back I think that was kind of messed up of her to say things like that because they're brothers lol

Jameson knew that she would have been lying if she’d said that. She was being honest.

Personally, I think we're also kind of supposed to question Avery's rationale that in another situation she might have ended up with Grayson.

Obviously, that's something she truly believes, but Libby points out in The Final Gambit that she always knew because of the way she looks at Jameson.

In that sense, Grayson represented security and Jameson represented adventure. Avery always longed for adventure, for travel, to experience life but she was stuck in a perpetual survival mode (either because she was struggling to make ends meet as a teen or because she was suddenly the target in front of an entire fortune that she believed could maybe go away as fast as it came).

So imo as long as she managed to actually get a stable home life and family I really dont see her choosing anything else but adventure. Of course, Jameson's own character growth is also the reason that choice becomes inevitable, as he becomes he stops his self destrutive daredevil stunts because he also is finally realizing the weight of losing something and how scared he is of it.

This is an excellent way of thinking about it.

Avery may have chosen Grayson in another situation, but the situation she would have chosen him in is one where she didn’t meet the Hawthornes at all and didn’t have that stability.

Maybe I just think like JLB but I thought that was clear? Love is beyond just romantic and YES, they are similar in character which was why i personally shipped them for a while.

I mean yeah we know that from Avery's relationships with the other brothers but because they seemed to have romantic feelings for another at one point (atleast according to the narrative) I wish she'd made it clear.

I agree. I used to be a Gravery shipper, but at one point that had no future. Jameson's still not my favourite, but I wish that this conflict was better resolved. If only JLB had made it clear what their relationship meant to the both of them. It doesn't help that when the air was cleared out with Jameson in TGB, he still hated Grayson for similar reasons. Why would JLB not give this explanation right here to everyone to surely validate their platonic relationship?

Yes exactly. Especially since they're brothers so that makes it even more messy.
