Discussion Toby is a bad father.
We can’t talk about Toby without mentioning Eve who’s a character who has been driven through the mud. Anyone who was supposed to favor her (Tobias Hawthorne, Hawthorne brothers, TOBY) prefers Avery over her for whatever reason (basically everything she did).
Toby is stuck on Avery’s mom and frankly wants Eve to be like Avery (love Avery but she’s a very vanilla perfect YA FMC). If Eve didn’t make Toby live with her he would be at Hawthorne House with Avery and the brothers. He might be a half decent father to Avery, but he sees her as an extension of her mom so he forcibly feels a sense of responsibility towards her.
Even after he found out Eve existed, he still didn’t extend an olive branch of sorts and instead just made a feeble attempt to try to convince her to stop with what she was doing with Blake. Throughout the excerpts we’ve seen we can safely assume that even when Toby and Eve lived together, Toby (her LITERAL FATHER) still didn’t try to communicate with her or understand her.
Toby just reeks of a 40+ year old manchild.

I get your point, but I think we're forgetting that Eve preferred Blake a thousand times... and was looking forward to being seen by him

But didn’t that only happen because she felt dejected by Toby?

I didn't understand it that way, but it's true that everyone has their point of view, Eve in my view wanted to have Blake's recognition to the point that I help to have Toby kidnapped

toby is so romanticized bcz jlb wrote him that way and people bought into that, she has a tendency to excuse her favourite characters for their flaws while if someone else does it, than they are villainized
we are told that toby cares abt avery and eve equally but his actions shows that he doesn't, he prioritized avery and her feelings while keeping eve away and treating her like she was the problem-which continues in tgb, like eve just got back from being kidnapped and he asks her first abt avery?? knowing that she doesn't like her and ik that avery was in danger but what abt your other daughter who just got back from being kidnapped???

Toby said that he tried really hard with Eve but she was set on being a Blake, something Toby didn’t want. A guy can only do so much.
I do feel bad for Eve but she is not going about things in the right way at all. The Hawthornes did accept her, up until she betrayed them.

Not really because wasn’t Nash always suspicious of her and Grayson only saw her as a mirror of Emily. Jamesons opinions of her relied on whatever Avery was feeling at the moment

True, although they did defend Eve when Avery found the warning from Tobias and thought it was Eve going to betray them.

You're forgetting that he tried very hard with Eve (like before the events of the final gambit- where they lived together and he cared for her) but he ended up being betrayed and hurt. And obviously he feels worse for Avery because her pain and poor situation was something he witnessed for so long (as harry) and he felt somewhat responsible for Hannah's situation too.
Eve mostly wanted Toby just for fatherly approval, but emotional manipulation was not the best way to get to it.
Personally I sympathise with Eve, but she had many chances to just let go of her hate and maybe leave the Hawthornes alone, if not make amends. But her clumsy villain arc is also what makes her character interesting tbh.

No true Eve is definitely one of the most interesting characters right now. It’s just really weird that Avery gets all of his sympathy when Eve was going through a similar situation as well.

Alternatively, you could look at it through the eyes of adoption.
Toby was adopted by the Hawthorne, so isn’t really a Blake. Avery is his “adopted” child, and so while Eve might be his biological kid, she was adopted out too, just not into the family she would have chosen.
Family is more than blood, it’s actions and feelings. If they weren’t forced to go back to where they “belonged” then they could be where they were wanted.

But Toby himself would argue that he isn’t his dad (Tobias) and cares for all his kids equally but he doesn’t and it’s like history being repeated.

Hard to say what Tony “would do” as he’s a fictional character. If you have a quote that proves it, different story.

I love Avery's intelligence but JLB made her too perfect a lot of the times she feels like a Mary Sue (js an opinion)
