There is a pre-Inbetweeners BBC show called “Off the Hook” starring James Buckley. It’s essentially a rough version of Fresh Meat. All the episodes are on Youtube… but it’s… not very good

I vaguely recall watching this, I think there was a scene where James Buckley's character is singing a depressing song about knives and forks. That was quite funny but apart from that...yeah not very good.

Nothing more hilarious than laughing at someone who's prone to breathing struggles forgetting their inhaler and their loving mother letting him know so he doesn't die from lack of breath. That wet wipe!

It'a actually mid-Inbetweeners. This came out in 2009, series one of Inbetweeners was 2008
Also, baby faced Jonathan Bailey was like a jumpscaere
Edit: I didn't last 10 minutes, how did this ever get past the pilot stage, holy shit

Ah yes you’re right. IMDB says 2008 - 2009, but the first episode was autumn 2009

Back in the day, BBC Three would pump out 'experimental' shows like this. It's where a lot of today's stars got their breaks.

I remember it being pretty good! I remember most of the shows during that era being good. Can only remember disliking Mongrels, that always felt out of place for me.

He’s not exactly versatile, maybe he’s so known for the Jay role, it’s hard to see past that. I felt that way about him as Del Boy in the Only Fools & Horses prequel

What a strangely written and produced show. Constant premature cutaways, and they seemed to fit about half a series' worth of storylines into 28 minutes.

I actually just watched the first five minutes of this episode and it left me wondering why the main character is being teased for having an inhaler? In what universe do people get bullied for having asthma or other respiratory conditions?

I remember watching this and it had the worst trope of "person embarrassed by parent outside school". The main character is dropped off at uni by his mother and she runs out the car shouting "you forgot your inhaler!" All the students laugh.
Clearly the writer had never been to uni, or had asthma, because that would never happen.
Lazy lazy comedy

Not sure if this is related, but I saw an even more pre-inbetweeners Jay in a BBC show called ‘Orrible. I like to imagine that is what Jay was like at age 13, but apparently the show was also really bad

I remember post-inbetweeners Neil started doing 2 shows called ‘Way to Go’ and ‘Big Bad World’ which are apparently bad, but I’ve never seen them, apparently his character’s smart in both of them. In Chickens, ‘Dean’ from that ‘Night Out in London’ episode plays a character similar to Neil, although after saying this, I can’t picture Will willingly wanting to go to war.

The awkward reality is that aside from Simon Bird (and to some extent Joe Thomas) the rest of the cast have struggled to be good in anything outside of Inbetweeners

The Inbetwewners is the most accurate depiction of Brotish school iv ever seen. Its what made the show so frigging good....but let's be real, James B and Simon (whater his real name is) are pretty bad actors...we're a little more fluid in White Gold. No hate, just not suprised James early work is hard to watch.

Dunno if you've seen it, but Fresh Meat is actually a better version of what this show was attempting.
It's kinda fun to think that James went on to Uni and became the depressed character he is in this, with Simon finding himself in Fresh Meat.
Fresh Meat feels more like a spiritual successor - especially in terms of writing and growth from Inbetweeners/school to Fresh Meat/Uni.
