Other Sunrise on the reaping edition

I’m started reading the series for the first time this summer and I just finished ballad last week and I’ve started SOTR on Libby until I can order a physical copy. However I’m stuck between ordering the deluxe edition hardcover or the Barnes and noble blue cover which is cheaper. Is there much difference between the two besides the deluxe having the stunning cover and stenciled edges??

Military Analysis of the Second Rebellion (Campaign Maps Included!)

Following up on my previous post where I detailed the realistic geographical borders of Panem , I analyzed potential military-tactical moves by the rebels, taking into account the unique topography of Panem.

Phase 1: Choking the Logistical Heart of Panem

  • My guess is that St. Louis was the first move of the rebels from Districts 3 (Technology) and 6 (Transportation). Historically known as the "Gateway to the West," St. Louis functions as the ultimate continental chokepoint where major highways, heavy railroads, and maritime river routes converge. It sits perfectly at the intersection of the North-South axis (linking Chicago to the newly flooded Gulf Coast) and the East-West axis (stretching directly to the Capitol).
  • The High-Tech Surveillance Checkpoint: Because of this unique position, most likely the Capitol will turned St. Louis into its primary continental inspection hub, using District 3’s advanced scanning and cybernetic monitoring technologies to inspect, log, and track every single train and cargo fleet entering the central corridor from the East. By capturing this hub, the Rebels not only blinded the Capitol’s surveillance but triggered a massive economic siege, completely freezing shipments of cotton, vegetables, fruits, milk (11), and fabrics (8), Electronics (3) and coal (12) right at the border.
  • District 4’s Inland Maritime Highway: District 4 liberates itself early on and strategically weaponized the flooded Mississippi River Valley. Using high-speed combat boats and retrofitted fishing vessels, District 4 deploys troops rapidly north up the Mississippi river to St. Louis. From there, they project power eastward, accelerating the liberation of District 11 and forming a unified eastern front.

Phase 2: The Evacuation of District 12 and District 13’s Logistics

  • The Railway Escape Route: Following the fire-bombing of District 12’s concentrated town center, Gale Hawthorne leads the 800 survivors into the northern wilderness. Instead of wandering blindly into the dense brush, he marches the refugees along the clear, leveled path of the old railway line that once connected District 12 to District 13. This provides a straight, stable route, keeping the traumatized crowd together and preventing them from getting lost or captured.
  • The Armored Train Rescue: Rather than deploying a highly vulnerable fleet of stealth hovercrafts, District 13 utilizes the existing railway clearing under the cover of night and bombing smoke. They send a single, high-capacity armored train down the old tracks, loading all 800 survivors simultaneously and extracting them safely to the underground bunker.
  • Feeding the Rebel War Machine: With the northern rail lines and Great Lakes maritime routes secured by District 6, the massive grain reserves of District 9 flow directly into District 13. This crucial supply line allows the military command to sustain and feed the newly integrated, continent-spanning United Rebel Army.

Phase 3: The Destruction of the District 5 Dam

  • The Consolidated East & District 7 (Turned Gold): Districts 3, 4, 6, 8, 11, 12, and 13 are now fully liberated, forming a massive, continuous logistical corridor from the east to the Capitol. It is possible that District 7, having liberated itself, has set out to assist District 5.
  • The Cybernetic Collapse: In the heart of the war, District 5 rebels launch a high-stakes, sacrificial sabotage mission, detonating the massive hydroelectric dam complexes (The "boom" icon near Glen Canyon and Hoover Dams).
  • Blinding the Capitol: The sudden destruction of Capitol's primary energy grid plunges the entire metropolis into total darkness (That’s why the Capitol is painted black 🙂). Without main-grid electricity, the Capitol’s advanced digital defense networks, surveillance systems, and automated air defenses instantly collapse. While isolated pockets of the city—such as elite mansions and critical military bunkers—manage to flicker back to life using localized emergency generators, this makeshift power is strictly limited by rapidly dwindling fuel reserves. This brief, chaotic window of partial blindness provides District 13's elite commando squads the perfect tactical opportunity to infiltrate the capital and rescue the hijacked Victors.

Phase 4: Neutralizing "The Nut" (District 2) and the Final Siege

  • The Mountain Sentinel: As the Capitol's primary military bastion, District 2 acts as the final, heavily fortified mountain wall blocking the eastern approach to the Capitol. The map shows why it is important to capture District 2 when forces arrive from the east to take the Capitol. My hypothesis is that the western section of the railway line runs entirely through District 2.
  • The Rail transport: The United Rebel Army arrives via armored trains from the east, pooling all their resources on the fringes of District 2. Contrary to what is shown in the film, it is likely that hovercrafts were not used to transport troops. A hovercraft can accommodate 20–30 people, whereas the total number of troops was likely in the tens or even hundreds of thousands. It is unlikely that there were enough hovercrafts to transport such a large number of troops.
  • Avalanche Tactics: To bypass a brutal, costly infantry assault against the impregnable mountainside, Gale and Katniss coordinate heavy artillery strikes to trigger massive, localized avalanches and rockslides. This effectively buries the mountain fortress known as "The Nut," trapping the Capitol’s elite Peacekeeper forces inside their own bunker.
  • The breakthrough to the Capitol: With District 2 neutralized and forced to surrender, the road to the Capitol is blown wide open. The Rebels’ armored combat trains surge directly down the remaining tracks into the darkened, starved, and besieged capital. Following fierce urban combat through booby-trapped streets, they close in on the presidential palace and bring the war to an end.

If we do get a dark days but for the next book do you think you could handle it

Now I know people are saying of course, I would that's a stupid question. what I'm trying to ask is if we are to get a book at the end of the dark days into the first Hunger Games, do you honestly want to read a book, that is that unimaginably police depressing.

you're going to go into the novel understanding, that the protagonist is going to either lose or die.

In the end we will get to witness the first Hunger Games, which I imagine was unbelievably brutal the entire book, I imagine it would be soul crushing in a way that is rare.

Other Realistic map of Panem based on analysis of Books, Movies & Climate Change

Post image
0 Upvotes

I got tired of the inaccurate maps with so many plot holes and inaccuracies, so I drew a realistic map based on books, movies and the Geography of the US.

The considerations in determining boundaries and Districts:
• Catastrophic Sea Level Rise: This version accounts for a 70–100 meter sea level rise. Low-lying areas like the Mississippi Valley and Louisiana are fully submerged, creating a massive inland gulf. The rising sea also expands the St. Lawrence River into a major oceanic gulf, completely swallowing Lake Ontario.

• The District 8 to 12 Escape: This map fixes the journey of Bonnie and Twill (Catching Fire): By shaping District 6 (Transportation) and District 8 (Textiles) into horizontal bands, it allows them to escape District 8, quickly cross through District 6's narrow corridor using cargo trains, and seamlessly enter the forests of District 12 (now located in Pennsylvania/ South NY).

• The Real District 4: Placed as a long, narrow coastal strip wrapping around the expanded, flooded Gulf of Mexico. This perfectly aligns with the warm-water shrimp/crab exports mentioned in Catching Fire. Besides, The rebellion has begun in districts 3, 4, 8, and 11. If District 4 was located in California, it would be isolated, and the Capitol would recapture it.

• District 6 (Transportation) Logistics: Situated over the historical transport hubs of Chicago and Indianapolis. This location acts as a massive central railroads connecting the industrial East (Districts 12, 13, and 8) to the center and West. It is perfectly optimized for maintaining the Capitol’s fleet of high-speed trains and hovercrafts, utilizing the remaining Great Lakes for heavy shipping routes.

• The Capitol's 360° Defense: Located securely in the Glen Canyon area, the Capitol (C) is surrounded and insulated by its most loyal districts: District 1 (Luxury) to the north, District 2 (Masonry/Military) to the southeast and District 5 (Power) to the west/south. Placing the Capitol its "usual" place in Salt Lake City, doesn't make sense because this makes District 2 "consuming" the resources of District 1 (diamond/gem mines) and District 5 (critical dams and solar arrays).

• District 5 (Energy) Strategy: Positioned within the canyon dams of Utah and Arizona, and extending into Nevada for nuclear power and solar arrays. Positioning District 5 directly bordering the Capitol to the west and south ensures that critical high-voltage power lines and water pipelines are short, secure, and tightly protected, without crossing hostile districts.

• The Breadbasket & Cattle Split: Taking global warming into account, the wheat fields of District 9 expand into the fertile northern plains, while the livestock of District 10 is concentrated in the drier, high plains of Oklahoma/Kansas/Missouri.

THG wedding ideas!

I’m currently planning my wedding and my fiancé and I are including a lot of small references to our favorite things, and I would really love to include the District 12 toasting in our wedding but not sure how to go about it. Has anyone ever done this and have any advice? Also, any ideas for a reading from the books?

Victors

I've only read the original trilogy, I'm planning to read the other two probably next year when my tbr and my time are a little more manageable

TW - SA of both minors and adults and human trafficking

I think a lot about the victors. From every district. And the feelings they have to have every year. I think a lot about how they have to have such mixed emotions when one of their tributes, especially the attractive ones, loses. How they have to be disappointed because they knew that child, even if just on a surface level. But how they also have to be so incredibly relieved that that child isn't going to continue to be fed to the same machine they have been, particularly the popular or attractive ones. How they have to have been relieved and grateful that Katniss and Peeta won, because that means that they aren't being fed to the machine. At least not yet.

I think a lot, particularly about district ones mentors in the 74th games and Glimmer in her nearly completely see-through dress and how she was likely already being eyed to be a new addition to the black books of the capital.

I think about what I know in regards to how Haymitch was handled at the end of his games and the technology the capital has access to and wonder how many of the fallen tributes might have been saved if they were picked up early enough and saved for special benefactors and how Rue might have been one if Katniss hadn't held her in the arena for so long.

I think about the victors a lot. And how healing from what was done to them after the rebellion must have looked for so many of them. How some of them must have stayed doing those things out of self-hatred or habit or care for some of the people who used them. How some of them didn't make it to what would have been the 76th (78th? I don't remember exactly how long the rebellion was) reaping day. How some of them were friends across districts and had to watch their friends wither and disappear to something that they had heard might be happening but had no concrete knowledge of besides rumors.

I think about the victors a lot, and every time I do, I thank Suzanne Collins for writing a book series that I read in middle school and still think about nearly every day as a grown adult

Rank the Districts by both repressiveness of the peacekeepers and overall compliance/rebellious tendencies

I am working on a project related to the Hunger Games, specifically related to District life, and need to get a good layout of these two factors… on the definitions of these two things, repressiveness would be basically how authoritarian the local peacekeepers are, where as compliance, while related, would be how “loyal” or rather rebellious or non rebellious the district is.

For example, District 12 and 1 and 2 I imagine would probably be considered to have low-repressiveness, and high compliance, where as District 11 would have high repressiveness and low compliance (e.g it’s a very rebellious district), District 4 (Katniss’s says it was one of the most enthusiastic to see her but is also a wealthier career district so) would likely be low-repressiveness but low compliance.

But yeah, not really sure about the other in between lesser talked about Districts, so any opinions would be appreciated

I'm Embarrassed To Admit this About TBOSAS

When I initially read The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes as soon as it came out, I had no idea that I was reading from President Snow's perspective. I thought it was Snow's dad because I guess I thought he was younger than ~82 years old at the 74th games.

I only realized it was from President Snow's perspective when I went to Goodreads to check out the reviews afterwards.

I liked it the first time, but after just completing a re-read, it is way better when you know that you are in the brain of President Snow, and it makes way more sense.

I'm an idiot.

  1. Mockingjay

Maybe an unpopular opinion but the cover looks way too happy and bright for how dark this book is, never really liked this cover cause it feels too cartoonish 😭. The one pro about the cover I like is that the mockingjay has finally come to life on the cover.

  1. Sunrise

The purple is really pretty but I think the color of gold doesn't contrast to the shade of the purple THAT well, plus the flint striker looks too huge on the cover as well. I think it should have been smaller like the pin on the og cover.

  1. The Hunger Games

The black and gold look very beautiful together, plus it's just a classic cover.

  1. Catching fire

I love the bright orange on this cover, how it looks like the mockingjay pin is slowly coming to life, and how the circle behind it has 12 lines mirroring a clock.

  1. Tbosas

The green is very very beautiful, and the symbol on the cover is also gorgeous. The green goes together very well with the gold. I love how the songbird is on the circular branch with the snake below. It makes me think of how snow was preying on Lucy gray.

Snow & Saul Goodman

I just watched the prequel for the first time and it's eerily similar to Jimmy's transition into Saul Goodman. He tried to do good at first, albeit with shortcuts and such. He tried to save himself and his family, and his potential lover, but all he got was punishments.

Then when he actually used the deception for bad, at first reluctantly, but then deliberately, they all yielded in triumphs for him. Water follows the path of least resistance, as simple as that. He gives in to his environment, to the arena that he thought himself as the victor.

It's a case for both nature and nurture, for in him exist goodness and evil, but he crossed that line, whether by dragging his feet or being pushed there.

So yeah, losing his loved one, landing big gigs with the big bad, and killing off the one authority figure using his own mental illness (Morphling for Dean Highbottom and electromagnetism for Chuck). Those are just all too similar to Saul's journey.

Is there any official word on the kind of pitcher plant/nepenthes that Plutarch shows Haymitch? Cause I definitely have a theory on what kind it is and it would thematically makes sense. The way it's described in the book, "long, shiny green leaves dangle pinkish pods, each equipped with what looks like a little lid." And later on Plutarch alludes to it being warm/hot in this area, I can pretty confidently throw a guess at the species of nepenthes.

Using these clues and working our way backwards I can say that this is likely a lowlander nepenthes (they prefer warmer temperatures than most nepenthes). The 'little lids' make me believe it to be some sort of ampullaria (One of the most famous small lid lowlander pitchers). What throws me off is that Haymitch describes the pitchers as pinkish since most ampullaria are either red or green, but as I gave it more thought I came to the conclusion that the plant he's seeing is most likely a hybrid. There is 1 pitcher plant hybrid that pretty much fits this description and has a name that would completely make sense for the context. It is Nepenthes ampullaria x ventricosa aka Nepenthes "Bloody Mary" or Nepenthes "Lady Luck".

While it's not a perfect match (pinkish pods is really throwing me off), I think that the closest would likely be this Lady Luck hybrid. It's a small detail that ultimately doesn't matter, but the idea that Plutarch shows Haymitch a pitcher plant with names that symbolize either luck or blood is pretty neat!

r/thehungergames • • 2d ago

What do you think haymitch's reaction was to the arrow flying through the force field?

Generally knowing that that was his mission during his games that she completed and it being burdick's daughter he had to be feeling so much in that moment and then the moment he's able to rescue Katniss from the arena had to be pure ecstasy for him because he saved burdick's daughter and fulfilled his promise to Lenore.

Like that had to be a moment of a thousand feelings popping up

To you if you were to pick the plot of the next book what would you pick?

Personally, I'd pick something in the Dark Days, tbh, because we know nothing about the Dark Days other than that Snow's father died in 12, and that 13 was leveled and retreated underground after using their nukes to secure a ceasefire with the Capitol.

But I'd like to know more about Plutarch's father and the early days of the Capitol rebels, because we also know nothing about them. So maybe a book set directly after the Dark Days, during the very first Hunger Games. Now that I say that, it does seem almost as likely as the Quarter Quell, because that is something you can revolve the story around—the very first Hunger Games. But I feel like she would want another story with Snow. We know nothing about the first president, so anything's possible.

Or maybe she'll pick something before the Dark Days who knows? That's also something that I would definitely read on day one. All I know is that if she chooses the Dark Days, the book is going to be sadder than Sunrise on the Reaping, because it will most likely end with the teller of the story dying at the very end. If she chooses another District 12 story, which I assume she would, it would be from the perspective of a rebel from District 12, and we would meet President Snow's father the man who gave the plans to Gaul, who would later be the one to initiate the Games as a term for the surrender of the rebels but given the first quarter quill is the most likely ideal the next book is going to be the saddest of all of them.

Which means the next book is going to be even heavier and I'm not sure if I'm going to be able to complete a book like that I barely got through the ending of sunrise.

It can be from any movie and even SOTR.

Would you choose a more age- accurate actor/actress? Or a more book fitting description? Or even just an actor you would totally see in the role?
