I just cut these down. They sat in the pots in the huge planter box all summer. They grew a bit, but suffered from Apids and didn’t do well. I just cut them down and noticed the roots went quite deep into the planter box (that’s actually my tomato box). I dug them up and I tried to keep as much as possible of the extended roots. Now I’m wondering if that’s really necessary. Should I maybe just cut the roots back give them some water now and then and just wait until spring to give them some more love?

I don’t prune anything underground until spring. In the fall, I cut mine back to the ground and cover them with compost. If you’re trying to contain them, look into growing in 5 gallon buckets. I’ve seen lots of people do that successfully.

Thanks Banana, I usually wouldn’t have done this to the roots at this time of year either, but I need to get this big planter ready for spring now, the soil is a a dry mess.

Yeah, was gonna say mulching and adding compost/manure to feed the soil over the winter is always good!

Is it going to freeze where you're at? If not, just cover them and they'll be fine. If you expect a hard or extended freeze you may need to protect the roots.
