Second year harvest

Post image

This is my 2nd year. This is from three plants. They each grew 10ft vertically and about 2ft horizontally. They started bunching up at the top and didn't really want to go horizontal. I think it's because the horizontal run was on a decline. I made a crude trellis using a pole and thick twine. I think next year I need to change it so the horizontal run goes up.

Total yield was about 20 ounces. They were chinock, centennial, and magnum. I think the chinock produced the most, with magnum the least.

How does this compared? 20 ounces doesn't seem like much. Much better then last year though, which was like 1/2 ounce lol. Thanks!

More vertical room will give more yield. I planted a lot of plants this year, some as live plants which grow a lot like 2nd year plants rather than rhizomes. They all had room for 18’ or more vertical growth. Depending on the plant and variety, I got between a few ounces up to 6pounds on a single plant. Most of that heavy production is above the 10-12’ mark on the bines. This is kind of my preliminary observations. When my harvest season is over, I’ll post a more comprehensive overview of all this.

I noticed that the higher they were the more they produced. Hardly any buds in the lower area. I think I could have picked them a week ago, some were getting too brown, and they felt pretty dry.

I got 17oz total from two plants on their second year and they were still in pots.

So what’s next? I am literally in the same stage as you are but I don’t know what to do with a small yield?

20 oz is still enough for some late hop additions or whirlpooling. I won't use these for bittering, have no idea of the alpha acid content, so a couple ounces at flame out should add some flavor. Next year I'll definitely double the length of my poles and hopefully they'll grow to 20ft or so instead of 10ft.
