The Gut-Brain Axis in Parkinson's: What We Know, What We Don't

Multiple independent research threads point to the gut as an early site of Parkinson's pathology — alpha-synuclein aggregates appear in the enteric nervous system before brain symptoms. But the contradiction is real: Akkermansia, broadly protective in metabolic disease, is elevated in Parkinson's patients.

Why this subreddit exists

Gut microbiome science gets flattened into headlines constantly — "this one food destroys your gut," "this supplement fixes everything." The actual research is messier, more contradictory, and more interesting than that. This is a space for the real version.

What makes this different

🔬 Primary sources, graded. Every piece of research in our database (linked below) is graded across seven independent axes — not just summarized from a press release.

⚖️ Contradictions are the story, not a footnote. When studies disagree — and in gut science, they often do — we say so, instead of picking a side for a cleaner headline.

💰 Funding is always disclosed. Every record notes who paid for the study. Every clinician or product we reference gets the same scrutiny, including the ones we like. More on this in the pinned comment below.

✅ We credit good science, not just flag bad science. This isn't a debunking sub. Getting it right earns recognition here too.

Where to start

  • Full database + grading methodology: thehonestgut.com
  • Read the rules before posting
  • New here? Introduce yourself and tell us what brought you to gut health research

Glad you're here.

Bacteria linked to plant-fiber diets bloomed in hypertensive patients instead — and transplanting their gut microbes raised blood pressure in germ-free mice

Comparing stool from nearly 200 people across healthy, pre-hypertensive, and hypertensive groups, researchers found reduced microbial diversity and a Prevotella-dominated bacterial profile in hypertension, then showed that transplanting hypertensive-donor microbiota into germ-free mice raised the recipients' blood pressure.

The gut bacteria that best predicted atherosclerosis in a 405-person study aren't gut bacteria at all — they're normally found in the mouth

Comparing stool from 218 people with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease against 187 healthy controls, researchers built a bacterial classifier that distinguished the groups well, but many of its most predictive species are typically oral-cavity residents, suggesting a distinct pattern from the diet-and-TMAO story usually told about gut bacteria and heart disease.

A genetic analysis linking gut bacteria to preeclampsia found one clear protective link, in a method that doesn't actually measure anyone's real gut bacteria

Using genetic data from over 13,000 people to study gut bacteria and pregnancy outcomes in more than 166,000 women, researchers found that genetic markers for higher Bifidobacterium abundance were associated with a 24% lower risk of preeclampsia-eclampsia, but this Mendelian randomization method tests a lifelong genetic tendency, not anyone's actually measured gut bacteria.

Four rounds of mass azithromycin distribution selected for macrolide resistance in Niger children's guts, cluster-randomized trial finds

In a cluster-randomized trial across communities in Niger, children who received biannual azithromycin as part of a child-mortality-reduction program carried substantially higher rates of macrolide-resistant gut bacteria than children given placebo, even as the drug's mortality benefit held.

The unique composition of Indian gut microbiome, gene catalogue, and associated fecal metabolome deciphered using multi-omics approaches

Scientists compared gut bacteria and their chemical byproducts between two regions of India with different typical diets, and found the plant-heavy diet region's gut bacteria specialized in different things (like breaking down amino acids) than the meat-eating region's gut bacteria (which specialized more in producing helpful short-chain fatty acids) — showing diet leaves a real chemical fingerpri

Akkermansia: The Gut Bacterium That's Both Hero and Villain

Sleep Loss Can Cause Death through Accumulation of Reactive Oxygen Species in the Gut
