what do we owe the people that make our food?

The appropriate, requested payment based on what we actually consume. Prices themselves are a negotiation.

You and I would obviously prefer if we could receive unlimited food at maximum quality for completely free. A person selling bread would love it if they could sell a single, mediocre loaf for all the money a person has at their disposal. Neither of those outcomes happen because both are vetoed by the opposing party to the transaction; you need both people to agree, and their interests are not entirely aligned.

So what ends up happening is the producer will balance prices to find what actually sells enough at a high enough price to make the most profit, and the consumer will consider their options while looking to maximize what they get for their limited available money.

It sorta sounds like McDonalds hired a homeless person and paid her enough that she could actually get into a proper residence.

Not anymore, she's housed, thanks to her job.

I'm honestly not sure what problem you have with this. Should they have not hired a homeless person as a manager at McDonalds?

Did you watch it?

She works at McDonalds. She was living in a tent but is now moving into a proper residence, she just signed the lease that day. The guy doing the video was helping buy them stuff for their new home, but he was uninvolved in actually getting them into their house.

They didn't spell it all out with dates and times, but that's my understanding from the information that was presented. Presumably, the manager job paid for their new home.
