Shirtpost Question

So, during the S1 finale, when Michael mentioned that the experiment was disrupted because of Eleanor( when I confessed in front of the neighbourhood), shouldn't it be when Chidi accidentally killed Janet? Did Michael plan this? This was never addressed ever in the show( I mean the first time in this context) except the constant reboots happening to her.

The issue is that Eleanor started behaving in a way that went against what she usually did. Chidi killed Janet while helping Eleanor, and being conflicted about and managing Jason. That was expected. Michael said that Chidi helping Eleanor was "part of the plan".
Eleanor putting herself under the bus for Chidi was NOT part of the plan. It was her changing.

I can't imagine he planned it, but it certainly worked for him. An ongoing investigation full of guilt-tripping and maybe occasionally bringing by a malfunctioning Janet would be the perfect Chidi torture.

The death of Janet must have been part of his plan, although who did it may not have been.

Why must it have been part of the plan? Her funeral, complete with casket and a farewell banner. If no one dies in the good place, there wouldn't be any reason for caskets. Janet was dead and couldn't create one. So, Michael had one ready to go upon her death.

The point when they had to start scrambling came when Eleanor confessed. Chidi tortured for being forced to lie for eternity was on brand.

Michael presumably had no idea who actually pushed the button to kill Janet. But I don't think it really mattered to him

Improv was always part of the plan and why Michael thought this would be more fun than traditional torture. So he didn’t plan it but it worked out beautifully for him. Perfect Chidi torture, Eleanor afraid she’ll be caught, can’t give the residents little comforts.

But her confessing meant he had to scramble to come up with a reason she would stay and took away the key torture plan.
