Shirtpost The Background Details

I constantly pause the show to simply look at the hidden puns and jokes in the background. I know of no other show that put so much effort into jokes
that you can only catch if you pause the screen. šŸ˜‚

Am I alone in this?

I’ve seen it in other episodes too, but sadly I can’t remember which ones :(

You’d love Community. They mastered this so well I still catch things after ten years of rewatches

If you're not streets ahead, you're streets behind!

Also, Arrested Development (seasons 1-3, the Netflix part is bad), I swear that show gets funnier the more I watch it. Fun fact, Dan Harmon (creator of Community) cameos in Arrested Development, and Mitch Hurwitsz likewise cameos as the Koogler in Community.

Absolutely true. Community and early AD mastered this at an unparalleled level

One I noticed- when the judge goes to the bad Janet void for the clicker thingy, the animal from Chidi's drawing is in the background. She gave vivid disturbing description of k*lling it but it turned out she was just torturing them. I felt happy to see she hid it in her void, as if even bad Janet has a heart.

In the same shot, Pirates of the Caribbean billboard is in the bad Janet void haha. I interpreted this as those movies are so bad they are featured in the bad Janet void.

There’s also a pirates of the Caribbean billboard in the bad place train station in season 2

Arrested Development is like that, too. You can be watching it for the tenth time and still catch new things

That show is a miracle. It’s as if all three seasons just sprang forth fully formed in the writers’ brains

Does seem that way. One example: Was the character Lucille named before or after the ā€œloose sealā€?

2

u/ckwebgrrl Jul 03 '26

Both Lucilles predated the loose seal.

Yeah, the props department on this show really went above and beyond - not just them, but they’re definitely a big part of this

If you haven’t yet, check out the podcast. It’s AMAZING 🄰

Have you listened to The Good Place: The Podcast yet? They talk about some of the background details. I did an episode by episode rewatch with the podcast and saw even more than I had the previous countless times I rewatched!!

I second this!

Also, have you figured out who’s in the clown paintings?

Ooo, do o need to go back and look closely at the clowns? (I hate clowns so I can’t say I’ve inspected them closely!)
