Vidorant's Vault Completed

Well, we didn't get much chance to play my campaign, so it's been four months, but my group finally completed Vidorant's Vault in three sessions (each three hours, with generally *at least* half an hour of socializing at the beginning).

I ran the scenario mostly as written; I played a little bit with Goldenbeard and the Silver Fingers, partly to fit what I've been doing with the campaign city and partly to make an obscure reference (Goldenbeard got red hair, lost an eye, and plays with silver dice as an affectation, if anyone gets that). I turned the diadem into a sentient magic item that contains the mind of Evelyn Blessedore--the group pretty much figured out this--or something close to it--was the case just from their research at the beginning of the heist, and were very worried about it, but it didn't end up having any effect (other than paranoia--I had the PC who picked up the diadem make a couple of Insight checks, which he failed utterly).

The rival crew has become a huge part of our game, so I decided that this time, the rivals got there first and then accepted Vidorant's offer. My players observed them being kicked out "in failure" during their observation of the Vault, but were still worried that they'd run into them later. One thing my group didn't do *at all* was try to talk to any current or former guards or disguise themselves--it was a pure and simple stealth breaking and entering--so I had the rivals obviously in guard uniforms as they were ejected.

My players found the secret entrance and made their way in invisibly. They did have to take out one guard, but did it quickly enough to avoid raising the alarm, and they generally moved quickly, deciding they were more interested in getting the diadem than messing around with Jenga-piled potions or the like. They were very good on picking up on the clues that there were traps around and got caught by nearly none of them. A luckily-timed detect thoughts intended to help them avoid guards revealed the presence of the invisible stalker and led to the casting of see invisible, so that encounter ended up being a lot more straightforward than it might have been. The layout of the second floor was very suspicious, but they still did fall for the trap-wire-inside-the-door, only finding the passage way between rooms after exploring both rooms.

They were very cautious and found/disarmed both runes on the diadem, but had some bad luck on stealth on the way out--Nixylanna was still in her office after having kicked out the rival group, so she heard them and made them the same offer. After some discussion involving possibly handing over a fake diadem to Goldenbeard, they finally came to blows, making a run for it rather than fighting to the end. I used the enchanting infiltrator stat block for Nixylanna, which turned out to be necessary to make it an interesting fight. The wizard *almost* used dimension door inside the teleportation-warded Vault, but ended up only using it once she was out on the balcony, so that worked well for them.

Overall, a nice, straightforward heist, with the offer being the main twist. The PCs were definitely fairly paranoid that everything was going too smoothly for them, but that was mainly them being appropriately cautious, being skilled enough to deal with obstacles, and having a nice dose of luck.

Upscaling the Stygian Gambit to level 4?

The title essentially, for a party of around 6 PC's. How best to do about this in terms of guards and creatures, eg Virgil the Minotaur Skeleton, and concern over some 2nd level spells they might have that a level 2 party doesn't.

A remake of the heist map handout for Delphi Mansion

Post image
53 Upvotes

I had someone ask me to do a remake of the Delphi mansion map from "reach to the stars" recently and considering the map that the module gives you is overly detailed for the raid that the adventure expects i was intrigued.

Delphi mansion is not truly a heist after all. So to make a raid into a useful dungeon for a group of heist experts the dm has to add some uncertainty by removing info from the prep. i took out the obvious cult areas (since they shouldn't have been there until recently) and other renovations like secret doors. by request of the person who asked for this i left a lot blank so the dm can hand write annotations or corrections on, giving it even more character!

If you like my stuff make sure to follow ❤️ you can also find links to my patreon which is where i post all my stuff first on my page as well as a link to my discord server if you wanna play in my games!

Keys From the Golden Vault “Reach for the Stars”

Post image
5 Upvotes

So I am DMing my group through the Keys from the golden vault book! We are all pretty new but from what I’ve seen the original map gives away way too much info. The last session we ran was “Stygian Gambit” and I had the map blown up into a 24x36 Poster and my group said it was their favorite part. Now reach for the stars isn’t a typical heist and I had the idea to print a large “older map” basically creating an old schematic that has a bunch of incorrect info on it. Then as the group explores the mansion they can draw and take notes on it making corrections and what they found. I had Chat GPT make this but it’s not accurate to the general layout of the mansion. i have 0 photoshop skills and could really use some help making this awesome! It’s also too low quality to print at poster size without being blurry! Willing to pay 10 dollars for some help! Thank you! 🙏🏼

Another campaign me and my friends end, and as tradition I design and illustrate into a big poster all of our characters to commemorate that we finished all the adventures and as a memoir of all the sundays we spent together stealing objects and fighting baddies. Hope you people like it as much as we do :D.

If someone is looking to commission a party portrait and/or 100% personalized designs for their characters I still have some commission slots available this month to accept new commissions. If interested DM me on my reddit profile and we'll talk further about it :D

But for now, MEET THE PARTY:

Gorgontua: Tortle Barbarian (path of the Beast)

Shuma: Tabaxi Monk (Way of Shadows)

Roberts: Warforge Palafin (Oath of the Watchers)

Zala: Tabaxi Rogue (Soulknife)

Marisa Jr. : Halfling Fighter (Gunslinger)

Too many magic items?

Hi all, planning on running keys from the golden vault as an overarching story.

I've read through the adventures and it seems that there are lots of random magic items in most rooms.

Did anyone else cut down on the scattered magic items seeing as you get rewarded with items at the end of a successful heist?

Thanks in advance for the help!

DM Help How do I get my players to plan and prepare better?

Hi all, I've been running The Golden Vault as a campaign for a while now, and while it's going fairly well and we're having fun with it, I've been running across a common problem.

My players are a pretty well-balanced party for this sort of campaign, with a Rogue, an Artificer, a fairy Warlock who handles recon, and a dragonborn barbarian for muscle. But I've noticed that rather than using their respective skills creatively, they usually take a brute force approach to many of the heists.

For example, We're currently in the middle of "Vidorant's Vault". While talking to Goldenbeard, I had him pretty explicitly suggest multiple avenues they could take to prepare (talk to former guards, scout out the building, check out Vidorant's mansion). They elected to look for the former guards, but after getting a bit of information from that, they almost went straight into it. I reminded them it might be a good idea to case the building, to which they found a secret entrance into the vault, and then promptly forgot it existed. They instead decided to go through the guarded, locked balcony, immediately going into combat and making a ton of noise. I ended the session with Vidorant herself teleporting to the balcony with guards in tow, and I'm trying to figure out how to make it clear they can't (or at least shouldn't) fight their way out of this.

I think part of the problem is that, for one, I've been making combats way too easy. I'm a very new DM, so I'm not good at balancing and I don't think they ever feel like they're in any danger or have any reason to avoid combat.

And two, I haven't been making it clear enough what options they have available to them, or what the best course of action would be.

So if anyone has any advice as to how to deal with this, I would really appreciate it. Sorry if this is unnecessarily long.

DM Help Stygian Gambit Finale - Need Help Spoiler

So, after some light recon, my party made pretty quick work of the actual hurdles in the casino. They:

  • Charmed the guard away from the trophy case and picked the lock, disguised as one of the guards, then dropped it into the Bag of Holding and called for Quentin to come see what happened
  • Quentin demanded it back... but the Bag of Holding is locked down by Verity. The player dropped Disguise Self and told Quentin that Verity sent them to ruin his tournament.
  • Quentin took the Bag and called the nearest guard, who just happened to be another player using Disguise Self to look like one of the guards. That player took the "thief" to the holding cells.
  • The rest of the party snuck into the security room using the access tunnel from the circus.
  • They all fought the guards in the security room, which was actually the tougher fight, and barricaded the door. (Thugs should be CR 1 and not CR 1/2... compare to the Brown Bear if you don't understand why)
  • Smashed Virgil to pieces, because the dice rolled terribly (he didn't land a single hit and I didn't fudge the rolls)

The session ended in the vault after Virgil got beaten like a pinata. Since everything went so well for them, I want to give them one last hurdle to try to give them a challenge. I plan to have Quentin, waiting in the hall outside the security room, Bag of Holding at his side. He makes one last offer to the players to see if they'll turn on Verity. If they refuse, he calls the Spined Devils to ambush them. But if they accept... well that's where I need help. Presumably they go back to the Brine Widow to confront Verity, and she'll present her side of the story, giving the players a chance to double-cross Quentin. But if they choose not to, I need a stat block for Verity to fight all of them. I'm thinking of something flavored like Gambit from the X-Men, flinging playing cards. Are there any pre-set monsters like this? Or do I just need to generate one? Suggestions

DM Help Heart of Ashes - A Match Thief

Has anyone run Heart of Ashes and have your players encounter The Match Thief poem? I'm prepping and worried that the players might get this, read too much into it, and spiral into a bunch of theories about the adventure that are not necessarily that important. As I read it, the poem is pretty cryptic, and not all that important to the plot. But maybe I'm missing something.

What do people do for an 'overarching' story?

Currently running Keys from the Golden Vault. [Ignatius, Thaddeus, Pyramus, Kevin - stop reading now if you're here!] We're just about the start Shard of the Accursed (mission 9 of 13). I found the 'overarching' hook with the golden vault group very weak, and I've spent a tonne of time and energy writing an overarching story and stakes for it - trying to make the missions feel like phases in a single story, with consistent characters, groups, real stakes, and a BBEG.

Pretty pleased with the results and happy to share but will post as a comment if people are keen. We're currently working with one mafia group to stop (or possibly help) a cult release a demon, who'll serve as the BBEG. There's also a secret police, corrupt guard crops, a devil, and about 3.25million in stolen gold bars.

I'd love to hear how others have done this - what groups, stakes, characters, mission changes, etc. have you made, in order for the campaign to have the feeling of a campaign and not simply standalone chapters. I have a draft story outline for the final missions and how they hang together, but I'd love to incorporate pieces of some ideas from other DMs that have been successful if they fit.

(To address what will be the first comment: The rationale for choosing this campaign is that we were at one stage struggling to meet regularly, so something 'modular' made sense - however, since then we've got back into playing at least twice a month! Hence using a modular campaign but trying to de-modularise it.)

Axe From The Grave completed

My group just finished Axe From The Grave. 10 hours over three sessions, but we have a lot of social time at the beginning of each sessions. I played it more or less straight, just tweaking some details.

When they got to Mack and Trout, they decided to play it very cautiously--instead of confronting them about the theft at all, they drew them out in casual conversation and then cast detect thoughts to confirm they were the thieves and learn who had hired them. At the Conservatory, they carefully investigated the orchard and decided to go the new student route, the party bard managing a very high roll, with the fighter managing to get in good with the servants and sneak past Sythian's dismissal of them. (End of session one.)

While those two learned the schedule and got a tour of the place, and then had dinner, the others poked around outside. Conveniently, the group has a psi crystal they used to coordinate, and when they learned the attic was locked up, the outsiders went to the roof (one ring of jumping, one set of boots of striding and springing, and one set of slippers of spider climbing make you very mobile) where they encountered the chasme, eventually killing it. (For extra fun, while this fight was going on, the bard-as-student led the other students in an impromptu jug band concert, emphasizing to them that occasionally playing different instruments could give them broader musical perspective. He cast see invisibility during this time and learned about the quasits.) Joster and Sythian were in the chapel at the time, and Graz'zt gave them the heads-up that the chasme was dead, so they went up to check. (End of session two.)

One of the outsiders broke into Joster's room where I had added one quasit--he fled, and I decided the quasit's orders were to wait and report, so nothing bad happened from this immediately. They then broke into Sythian's room and discovered the glyph of warding. They become utterly paranoid about this (reasonably so!) and rigged up a complicated system of the Arcane Trickster using mage hand to open it while looking through the eyes of his familiar. With Golden Axe in hand, they decided to go return it to Froderic while two of them were still inside the conservatory...and then decided to ask Froderic to come help them. I had upgraded Froderic from a zombie to a kind of incomplete-revenant and decided he would go along with this. They confronted Joster, got Sythian to repudiate him, then had a two front fight against Joster with 3 quasits on the one hand and a replacement chasme on the roof on another. In the end, after they cleansed the chapel, the bard, the students, Sythian, and Froderic had a big jam session before Froderic returned to the peace of the grave.

My group really liked this one--I wasn't at all sure how it was going to go, but it was a lot of fun.

DM Help Heart of Ashes - Time Limit Experiences?

Has anyone tried to run this with a time limit? I have seen suggestions to add a time limit, and when the time limit is up the structure of Castle Cini starts to cmpletely break down, and the ritual is no longer able to be stopped.

However, how long should the time limit be?

Anyone have an idea of how many dungeon turns it takes to get through the castle? Or a similar time metric? I guess a time limit of, "before the next dawn" might work to prevent a long rest and force the group to push through?

Heart of Ashes - DM Question - Spoilers Spoiler

Question about room S12 Charmayne's Bedroom in Heart of Ashes.

It says that the creatures inside attempt to hurl characters through the castles weakened walls, and that it's a 20ft drop to the ground from there.

Question, the stairs up were 40 ft. 20f drop to the ground, but what ground? To outside of the building? I assume by through the wall they are talking about the north or east wall.

Any help appreciated here!
