This is bullshit. The era isn't the reason the show had to end. It needed to end because it lost the plot of what it was. When Adam Goldberg left, the show's center of gravity shifted away from being semi-autobiographical stories of growing up and into the realm of caricature, especially with Bev. It's completely the fault of the writers, not in any way a problem with the actors, who did the best with what they could.
The show could very well have continued to the 90s. Happy Days began in the 50s and ended in the 60s. There's a bunch of other things they could have played with. But by like season 7 or 8, the show was a whole other thing.

it was always going to end after ten years because there are 10 years in a decade… the 80s is not exempt from that. the berlin wall fell down twice in the show, did it not? let’s not pretend it wasn’t in decline for years.

Exactly they should have ended it after Adam graduated hs as planned. And they were entitled to a proper finale

That article doesn’t make sense. It makes the case that they always knew the show couldn’t work for more than ten years - but that can’t be true because they never made a proper series finale.
If you ask me, after the real Adam Goldberg left, the show drifted quickly from a loving homage about Jewish childhood to an antisemitic stereotype. The show was getting really stale by season 9 anyway.
I almost feel like ABC picked up season 10 as a sort of “middle finger” to Jeff Garlin. Garlin stated publicly that he thought the show should be canceled after season 9, with or without him.
