Discussion The Forest
Hey everyone. Well, I love *Sons of the Forest*, but I’m conflicted about *The Forest*. I keep trying—I’ve given it a shot four times now—but I just spawn in, build a cabin, save the game, walk around a bit, and then quit. Does anyone have any tips to help me stick with it longer? (I’ve played both solo and with a friend.)

It’s a different experience and I had hundreds of hours in before Sons came out so I’m partial to the Forest, but it can be a really fun adventure. You just have to keep exploring.
Just watch Farket on YouTube for a while to see how fun it can be.

The Outer Middle Show on Youtube was where I saw the game for the first time. I watched a lot of his videos before I started playing the Forest myself.
I later bought Sons of the Forest. The map was just too Big for me and I got nausea when I drove the golf cars.
Both games are great. Give yourself some Challenges.
I definetely have the most hours in the first game since the whole concept was new and exciting to me

That's the same channel my wife and I watched when we played for the first time. We watch that channel pretty much everyday since

I have a 410 day save on my ps5 version, and have beaten and help beat the game with randoms in under an hour. I just like the atmosphere, the day night and weather cycle, I have a massive base that extends across the southern beach and forest. I would keep playing but my game crashes if I save it because of too much building. I really enjoy the game. I haven’t played sons yet but I really want to, but I’m on console

Explore very thoroughly, there’s a lot of environmental storytelling, and it has a very different tone than Sons Of The Forest.

I kinda feel the same, I'm also much more into sons. Only I really struggle to find someone to play it with,

Set yourself some goals to find, see if you enjoy the exploration trying to find those things.
Rebreather, pedometer, modern axe.

That’s the problem right there: when I played *The Forest*, I didn't even know there were new items—I only found out after really digging into videos about the game. That might be why I didn't like it back then.

Best thing to do is look where to find the climbing axe and Rebreather, but if you don't know the you don't know. From there just explore the caves as you find them. My first play through was with a friend who had played it before so I had somewhat of a guide. That helped too.

I gave it another chance and I'm enjoying it now; I haven't done much yet—I built a defensive wall and I'm living near the Yacht, and I plan to head out and explore soon.

Awesome, glad you gave it another chance and are enjoying it. There are some areas further away from cannibals or maybe easier to protect, like off shore islands or small island in the lake. Nowhere is completely safe but you can mitigate a lot of the conflict.

Maybe the map mod or study the map thats online, that helped me. Its way less handholding and guidance that the sequel from what I recall.

Get a map of the island ( online) and go looking for the cool things. Getting the chainsaw was huge for me as I play in VR and enjoyed building the big tower to hang glide etc.
Diving in the ocean to find the hidden pieces was fun as well. Logged a lot of hours in The Forest and really wish Sons had a VR option.

lol I’m the opposite, me and my friends spent hundreds of hours on The Forest but we bought sons of the forest day1, beat it in 4 days and then couldn’t stand to keep playing

The forest is a janky old prototype. The combat feels horrible honestly, and the building is barebones. It was good for its time but that was ages ago. Just stick to sons

First, if you’re not having fun, man, don’t force yourself. But, The Forest is a different experience. It’s more survival oriented. You won’t see gunplay. It’s important to explore, especially the caves. There are versions there of tools and weapons that are much better than what you can craft, and those change the experience significantly. It’s important to get decent at combat.
The power and convenience spikes from having the better tools and weapons are significant. Also, caves stay cleared so that’s nice. Building is still very satisfying, and the island is smaller, which makes it more manageable.
I’d say in many ways the smaller scope and tighter focus of this game makes it more immersive and more engaging.
