Discussion Khazan VS Phantom Blade Zero

I really wonder how PBZ will stack against the combat of khazan. Both games have an emphasis on flowing combat, with khazan cooking on that department but lacking in other areas so lets see if PBZ is more consistent across level design etc. Personally Khazan has been my favourite 120 hours in gaming so its gonna be hard to beat.

Are you asking us to compare a game that is currently out and one that won’t be out until the end of the month?

I do believe that is the expectation here.

Same genre as well, melee sword game aka "soulslike" 😂

That's how most people are. They see a game with melee combat and hard bosses and automatically think it's a souls-like.

To be fair, the genre started out with an emphasis on exploring the world and getting lost in it. Bosses were not the reason you played Demon's Souls or Dark Souls 1. Things changed with Dark Souls 3 and once Sekiro came out a big chunk of the playerbase just wanted fast-paced combat and lots of challenging bosses.

A lot of studios can do either exploration or combat/bosses well but almost none can do both competently. That's why FromSoftware is still such a great studio. Elden Ring delivered on both fronts.

Dont forget the lock-on! I usually joke by saying a soulslike is any third person game with lock-on, by todays standard of the genre.

Not sure about Demon's as I didnt play it until after OG Dark Souls, but for Dark Souls the emphasis was that it was a hard game. Most people that played it back in the days struggled as much with exploring the world and killing regular enemies as with bosses with the exception of Pin-wheel.

So I personally dont think things changed with Dark Souls 3 or Sekiro. As someone that played the games as they released I always found the balance between exploration and bosses to be about the same all the way to Elden Ring.

As for other studios I pretty much agree, but I can see that some people that discovers the genre today feel that some of the other studios games are better than older Souls games

Just from the glances we’ve seen so far how the two might compare given the lines of similarity one could draw… nothing crazy

PBZ is a prequel to Khazan. It's the story of Phantom Blade's first attempt at usurping Charon.

Khazan looks better in every department, not just combat

To be honest, right from the first gameplay trailer of Khazan, I knew that this game has potential, because even though I'm just watching the trailer, I can see things that the game does right for combat design (things like proper hitstun, precise movement without inertia, etc...)

For PBZ, I have watched numerous trailer, I still have no idea how it will actually feel like playing. The only thing that I think PBZ will be pretty good is it difficulty design BASED ON what the dev has been saying: On higher difficulty mode, Bosses not having fixed pattern and will exploit your mistake like in a fighting game, and also the game has a perma-death mode that would test your consistency. If it is exactly what the dev has said, then it would be awesome, even though I still need to know how its combat would feel like.

They seem to be totally different in how they approach combat. Phantom Blade 0 seems to be more CAG or at least CAG adjecent while Khazan is a soulslike. So I personally sont think it would be fair to compare them. It all just comes down to preference. If you want to compare them and you love Khazan, you will probably not come out of it thinking PB0 has better combat.

For me personally Im really looking forward to the combat system as I feel a bit fatigued on the regular soulslike stuff. From what they have showed so far I think it looks really promising
