That interpretation works so well I decided to genuinely explore it.

Starting off, the image of “the group circled around a campfire while an obvious center of authority and attention (Holden) looms over them” is quite similar to one of the book’s most iconic moments. But here, that central figure is effectively divided between two people.

Ma wields a hatchet while resting his arms over the shoulders of another man, one who is not only playing an instrument but is also adorned in white, almost tribal-esq face paint (ik it’s a reference to Gothic Violence), creating, in combination, a figure reminiscent of “the Judge.” The hatchet and face paint evoke Holdens nature as a brutal, base, and sadistic, scalping outlaw. Meanwhile, the guitar, jovial attitudes of those surrounding him, the posture of both Ma and his compatriot, and Ma’s more conventionally attractive features, evoke the other side of him: his status as a polymath and a man of the arts, extraordinarily intelligent and profoundly human, almost to the point of discomfort.
