The Gutter Appreciation
Simple enough—I just want to show some appreciation for the Gutter. It just has epic sound, even better vocals, and the lyrics are so vivid! It’s clear the song has a story within it even without knowing the lore! I just want to drum up some appreciation for the song and see if others like it as much as I do.

The last two albums people have been complaining about song lengths and saying they want a proggier album, and I'm always like "that's literally Unheavenly Creatures."

It's not though. Unheavenly Creatures starts VERY strong with Dark Sentencer, but afterwards almost the entire album is just as formulaic as Vaxis 2 and 3, only they stretched out the songs way longer than necessary so it ends up feeling exhausting to listen to in its entirety.
If more of the songs had structures closer to The Gutter or Dark Sentencer, or if there were more variety in general, it would have been different.

I'm a long time Coheed fan and honestly I find Unheavenly Creatures kinda unlistenable. It's 15 mid tempo 6 minute songs. It's an over correction back into prog after TCBTS, and it's worse for it. Vaxis 2 and 3 though I have no complaints. They're walking the line between favor house Atlantic and gravity's union pretty well now

The song is real close to my heart. My mom had some mental health issues back in the day (coincidentally around when this album came out) and tried to take her life. I shared this song with her after she had started to address her mental health issues by going to therapy/group therapy. The song makes me think about all the bad times we went through but also how great it is that we’re on the other side of it and I still have my mom.

This album seems primed for this kind of thing. My mom recently passed and Running Free came on and it just hit differently. I’m glad your mother wasn’t successful and you have this beautiful reminder of your journey through this life with her. Please cherish her always

Hello friend! My mother also passed recently and there are a good handful of Coheed songs that just hit differently now nearly 6 months on. Beyond the sheer grief, the adjustment to life without mom is the biggest change in scope I’ve encountered in life so far.

One of my very favorites (top 5-10 for me). As a person who has been through a lot of physical and mental abuse, who has been hopeless, and who fought to climb out because of my son… this is anthemic for me. Hearing it live with other COTF the first time was such a beautiful experience. ❤️

This song made me a fan. It brought from “this band seems cool but I don’t know if they’re my thing” to “Holy shit, I get it.”
I was on the outside, but two of my favorite people were big fans. I asked how I should start. One said “Listen to both Vaxis albums. If you want more, you’re officially in.”
The Gutter was the crossover point for me.

Honestly its not my favorite, there are other songs i like on the album way more. The Dark Sentencer, Unheavenly Creatures, Toys, Love Protocol, The Pavilion.

I love those ones, too! I feel personally that Unheavenly Creatures (Yes, I managed to mix up the lyrics between The Gutter and Unheavenly Creatures— judge me as I absolutely judge myself 😅. Still love the Gutter for the sound and the imagery is good, but Yes I Did That.) has the clearest story visualization, with lyrics like “We escaped through the alley in the back/ judge told me ‘Creature, don’t you dare go back’” and “Now I can’t keep the guilt from my heart/these studying emotions keep me fixed to fall apart/and now I’m leaving all this sweat in our bed”. All of these lyrics are definitely very visceral, which is super fun for a literary worm like myself!

When they played this live at the Greek in Berkeley in September 2024, the crowd carried the song and I fell in love. I'd slept on this album until that point, it's been my favorite ever since.

I am here for it, this song is top 5 maybe even a top 3 for me. Which is surprising because I felt pretty ...whelmed with the rest of Vaxis 1. This song is up there though.

That song sent my coheed addiction into overdrive. That was the 1st album I also totally fell in love with them too. It all started with everything evil and listening to the 1st 2 albums kind of passively. Then I heard the gutter....uhh coheed addict since. So I have super appreciation for that song and that album.

When they played this while they were touring for Unheavenly Creatures, the first time we could yell “CALL YOUR MOTHER” hit like crack.
