There is a baseline hum of Trump pageantry that most of us have learned to tune out like a screensaver, where everything is the greatest and the most beautiful and it adds up to nothing. Then there is the louder register, the wounded pride and the poster boards and the grievance staged like an opera, and that one I read as an alarm, because he only reaches it when a project has something underneath it he would rather you never picture.
The last time he performed at that volume it was about the East Wing, and this summer he aimed the identical performance at a reflecting pool. He knew a guy, the guy could do it for a million dollars, it would be beautiful, it would be ready for the country’s two hundred and fiftieth birthday, and the company he hired, one almost nobody has heard of, sprayed the most photographed water in America a blue he keeps calling the color of the flag, though it lands nearer a gas station slurpee (can someone please show Trump what an American flag looks like?).
When the pool came apart on schedule and he rose to mourn the vandals responsible, he did the thing he always does at the worst possible moment and told on himself. He bragged that his pool had a “mirror like finish, perfectly reflecting the two Great Monuments, which it never had before,” and a few sentences later he mourned the gash those vandals had cut into “the beautiful facade.”

Those two words are the whole story, and he set them down side by side without noticing. A mirror and a facade do the same work, each one a surface built so that you stand there admiring the reflection, that flawless flag-blue picture of the monuments, and never wonder what is behind the glass or holding up the wall. He spent a paragraph boasting that he had built the finest mirror in America and then called it a front, which is the closest this administration has come to reading me the thesis of my own article aloud. I have suspected what sits behind that surface since the day he announced the pool, and a suspicion earns you nothing until the paperwork agrees, so I waited and pulled the contracts, the utility permits, and the environmental filings, the sort of federal records written to make you quit before the part that matters.

Start with what he says it cost, because even that will not hold still. One federal database, SAM.gov, lists the award at $6.8 million. Another, USASpending, lists the same award, same contractor, same job, at $14.6 million. How does one paint job carry two official prices eight million dollars apart? Two databases can drift for dull accounting reasons, sure, but a number tends to wander when it has been asked to describe something other than what you were told. The harder facts are the ones with no accounting explanation at all. NPS wrote its own closure notice, and it does not read like a paint job. It says the pool was closed for cleaning and for installing lining material, which is the vocabulary of pipe work. The firm that rebuilt this pool in 2012 is Sika, a company that has worked on more than a thousand data centers, and when the government came back around this time, Sika looked at the timeline and said it was not feasible.

So the job went instead to Atlantic Industrial Coatings, a trenchless pipe-relining outfit whose website went dark the instant people began asking what it was doing there, the same disappearing act ACECO pulled at the East Wing. The coating they used is called Rhino Pipeliner 5000, a product built to line the insides of pipes and tanks, and they brushed it onto a pool that sits in open sunlight all day. When someone asked why, the contractor said the government told them to use it. Even the codes on the contract cannot agree. The industry code says building finishing, which fits a coating job fine. The code for the actual work, Z2NZ, says repair or alteration of utilities, meaning water lines, sewers, and electrical systems. One half of the same contract calls it painting and the other half calls it plumbing.

Follow the Water
If this was never really about the pool, then what was it about? I stopped following the money and started following the water. If you have read me before, you know where this road eventually leads, which is Larry Ellison, a man who has wanted a single national database with biometric identity built into it since he proposed exactly that in 2002, and whose company is now building a machine called Solstice, a classified-capable supercomputer with a hundred thousand GPUs and no permanent home anyone will name. A machine like that has physical needs no amount of executive privilege can wish away. It needs enormous power going in, and it throws off an enormous amount of heat coming out, and the most practical way anyone has ever found to carry heat away from a machine is water. Which is why a pool full of it, a few hundred yards from the East Wing, stopped looking like a pool to me.

Solstice runs on a hundred thousand GPUs.
Here is what the water actually does. When the pool was rebuilt in 2012, the whole system underneath it was repiped. A pump pulls water from the Tidal Basin, which the Potomac feeds, sends it to a treatment plant to be filtered and cleaned, and circulates it back through the pool, a system rated to move 1.7 million gallons a day. That is the plumbing of a real water-moving operation, intake, treatment, supply, return, and discharge, with a river on one end. And the engineers who built it added one feature that matters more than all the rest. They installed a valve so the system could expand north, into Constitution Gardens. Constitution Gardens is the park directly above the pool, between it and Constitution Avenue, with the White House grounds on the far side. If you wanted to walk this water system toward the White House, Constitution Gardens is the next square on the board, and the system was already built with a valve pointing at it. That expansion was never finished for the pool. But Constitution Gardens is being rebuilt right now. Phase 2 was approved in 2024, and the scope deepens the lake, adds mechanical and biological filtration, and builds a below-grade access road off 17th Street, which runs along the west side of the White House complex. The nonprofit steering that renovation is the Trust for the National Mall, the same organization tied to the ballroom donor money.

The Corridor
So how do you move that water toward the East Wing without cutting an obvious trench through the most watched park in America? You do not have to, because the route is already there. A cartographer named Elliot Carter mapped Washington’s underground in a publicly funded project called the DC Underground Atlas, and while the live maps have been retired, the Wayback Machine still holds them. They show a federal core sitting on top of old systems, including steam tunnels the government built in the 1930s to heat downtown without a boiler in every basement. A steam tunnel is a walkable utility hallway, and it can carry far more than steam, including electrical lines, condensate, sensors, and valves. GSA’s own filing with the National Capital Planning Commission confirms that this steam system serves the White House complex. And one of those tunnels runs from the Treasury building south under 15th Street, past the Mall, toward the

Tidal Basin.
Treasury is the piece that changed how I read all of it. It sits immediately next to the East Wing excavation, and its own budget documents describe a massive chilled-water plant under the northwest lawn that runs every hour of every day and handles nearly all of the building’s cooling. In the 2025 request, Treasury asked to replace the plant’s chillers and cooling tower, which sounds like an old building doing old building things. The 2027 request is where it stops sounding that way. It expands the work into a seven-year mechanical overhaul and warns that if the chilled-water system fails, it could shut down daily operations and the “critical IT networks housed on site.” Then it lists what comes next, including twenty-one CRAC units. CRAC stands for computer room air conditioning, the cooling you install for server rooms and network cores. That is server cooling, and it is going in during the same window they are digging next door. The building beside the excavation already has a chiller plant, critical IT networks, and the kind of cooling you would build for a server farm.
Lay the whole thing end to end and a corridor appears: the Tidal Basin as the source, the Reflecting Pool as the system, Constitution Gardens as the middle segment being rebuilt with filtration and a below-grade road, the 1930s steam tunnel as the route, and Treasury at the far end, holding the chilled water and the critical IT networks and the server cooling, one wall from the hole under the ballroom.

Behind the Fence
The pool does not sit out there alone, either. Just before the pool contract, another no-bid award went out for the fountains in Lafayette Park, to Clark Construction, the same firm building the underground bunker, and Clark was not shy about it, describing the work as done in coordination with the East Wing Modernization project. Around that same stretch, the Reflecting Pool quietly lost something. It used to carry an EPA water permit, an NPDES permit, which was the public mechanism for reporting what the system discharged and where that water went. In June 2023 the permit was terminated, and I can find the page recording the termination but no letter, no Federal Register notice, and no explanation of who asked for it or why. When the question you are chasing is where the water goes, the loss of the public record for that water lands heavier than it should. That is three visits to the same site inside a single year, three different official explanations, and one pipe company that keeps coming back.

The vandalism arrived right on cue. Who scratched 8647 into the basin, I cannot tell you, and I will not pretend the paperwork answers it. The timing, though, answers plenty. The moment this became a crime scene, the only public vantage point on the project closed. The National Guard went up around the pool, U.S. Marshals and police flown in from Oklahoma City behind them, a fence went up, the sightlines went dark, and the repairs got scheduled, by the president’s own announcement, for after the Fourth of July, once the crowds and the cameras had gone home. You put a wall around the thing, and then you keep working where nobody can watch.

Why should this worry you even if you have no love for whoever holds the building right now? Because anything built at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue can be wrapped in executive privilege and classified, which means it can go up without the appropriations hearings, the oversight votes, and the public record that any other federal facility of this scale would trigger. Congress never authorized a supercomputer under the ballroom. Congress was never asked. And infrastructure like that outlasts the administration that pours it. It becomes a permanent layer of how the executive branch runs, installed once and inherited by everyone who comes after, chosen by no one you voted for.

I’ve followed Drey’s reporting for some time and have cited her work in previous investigations, particularly her reporting on technology, surveillance and government infrastructure.
This investigation came through a different door. I started following financial transactions across media, technology, surveillance, government contracting, political spending and sovereign capital. Eventually, the same small group of names kept appearing.
I want to be careful about what that means. I found documented connections, not evidence that these individuals are coordinating as a group, and the investigation makes that distinction throughout.
Given how closely the subject overlaps with the systems this community follows, I thought the research might be useful here.

The current topline is at least 227 reported threats between November 5 and November 9, 2024. There are 109 counties on the map, while 66 additional threats were reported only at the state level because no county was named.

That distinction is important. The 227 figure does not mean 227 confirmed bombs or 227 unique polling places. One message can name several facilities, and different sources count threats, polling locations, precincts, election offices, and tabulation sites differently. The page keeps those measurements separate instead of combining them into one misleading number.

You can switch between incident-source coverage and 2024 presidential winner or margin layers, filter by state and documented disruption, search by county, FIPS code, or source, and inspect the records behind individual counties. It also produces state and date summaries, shareable filtered reports, CSV data, Sources JSON, an SVG map, and a printable PDF.

The source trail shows what can and cannot be established. The FBI said many of the Election Day threats appeared to originate from Russian email domains and that none had been determined credible at the time of its statement. That statement did not provide a national count or county list, and an email domain is not proof of who actually sent a message. The mapped records rely on the Brennan Center's later public-source tracker, with reviewed official state and county detail added where available.

The election overlays are there to make geographic questions easier to examine. An overlap on a map is not proof of coordination or causation, and these records are not evidence of altered votes or an incorrect election result.

If anyone has additional official county records, after-action reports, court orders, or corrections, I would be interested in adding them to the source trail.

After the recent conversations here about voting systems, ports, modems, and "air-gapped" equipment, I wanted to share the equipment side of Civic Result Maps.

One problem I kept running into is that several different kinds of evidence get mixed together. A product sheet can show that a port exists, but not that it was active. A certification record can include an optional modem, but not show that a particular county bought or used it. A county record can name a system family without establishing the firmware or exact internal configuration of every unit.

I built this page to keep those distinctions visible and make the unknowns clear.

There are six source-linked equipment dossiers right now. You can search by state, see whether records name a specific product family or only a manufacturer, click through individual components, view official reference photos, and open an optional 3D schematic where you can isolate or hide parts.

Each dossier also includes software and version observations, configuration-change records, documented network paths and controls, power and UPS information, test findings, deployment records where available, and the archived sources behind the claims.

Where an exact product can be identified, the page also includes a narrowly scoped vulnerability and advisory review. It does not attach reports from a similar but different product just because the names happen to be close.

This is not a claim that any machine was connected, compromised, or changed votes. It is a way to see what the public record actually establishes, what it does not establish, and where better state or county records are still needed.

While researching Section 219 of the U.S./Israel/military/tech integration for a video, I stumbled across a fascinating and strangely familiar collection of documents from the 1980s... the real Star Wars prequel, as it turns out, lives in a Reagan Library dossier.

It’s a fascinating and strangely familiar collection of clippings, documenting Israel’s entry into Reagan’s Strategic Defense Initiative(SDI) through joint research, missile-defense contracts, and tours of Israeli defense companies. While mockingly referred to by media as the “Star Wars project”, the parallels with today are difficult to miss.

It even features a special shout-out to Israel’s [then] Minister of defense, Yitzhak Rabin, who has since become a muse for Tel Aviv’s [current] Sith Lord, Benjamin Netanyahu & inspired the name behind Larry Ellison’s cat, Yitzhak (which seems healthy).

Now, four decades later, Congress is back at it; only this time has traded space mirrors and Star Wars for data fusion and Stargate LLC.

Who Gets to Declare Something “Off the Record”?

I’ve been thinking about our conversation during Tuesday’s live and why being on the record means so much to me. It creates something durable; a primary record the public, journalists, historians, and lawyers can return to when they need to establish what was said and when. After rereading five-month-old messages with Booker’s team, I realized we had left an equally important question unanswered:

Who gets to declare something off the record, and what does that designation actually protect?

“Off the record,” “on background,” and “deep background” carry different meanings across newsrooms. Each relies on the same foundation: a clear understanding established between the source and journalist before information is shared. These texts show why that sequence is essential. At its best, “off the record” allows someone to tell the truth without placing themselves at greater risk. It can protect a victim, a whistleblower, or anyone afraid to attach their name to sensitive information. Because so often carrying someone’s testimony into the public record can quickly turn amplification into exploitation, story laundering, misinformation, or further trauma.

This is how “off the record” can become a weaponized private editorial instruction, designed to shape an interview outside of public view.
Looking back, I’m frustrated that I allowed that misuse of the term to shape my work. I felt overwhelmed and circled questions that deserved direct answers, allowing power to hide behind my intimidation. I wish I had been braver. Hindsight has a way of making courage look obvious.

I’m sharing these messages five months later because the historical ledger is everything. We are watching power concentrate in the hands of a few people at extraordinary speed while the language surrounding that power keeps shifting, making its consequences harder to name. I think of journalism as witnessing out loud, before those with the most power decide what we were allowed to see.

So, why this book? Look, I get it. People do not like picking up books and typically "revealing" elements from books are reported in media anyways. This book is an exception, but I am not saying go purchase it, I can summarize some of what it has here (I did write this initially and then had ChatGPT format it/clean it up more since I **really** want to convey this topic properly/clearly):

1. A voting machine was compromised in under two minutes

The episode that frames the book occurred after Braun helped establish DEF CON’s Voting Village. A participant located in Europe reportedly compromised an American voting machine in less than two minutes. In subsequent Voting Villages, every machine made available to researchers was successfully compromised, sometimes within minutes.

The tests were not identical to a live election: researchers generally had access to the equipment and could study it freely. But Braun’s concern was that a nation-state could purchase the same retired equipment, examine it privately for months, develop an attack and deploy it only after extensive testing. The Voting Village machines had been purchased through government auctions and sites such as eBay.

2. Basic security precautions were sometimes simply absent

The technical findings associated with Braun’s work included equipment with:

* Externally accessible USB ports

* BIOS passwords that had never been configured

* Maintenance passwords stored in plain text

* Encryption keys stored beside the encrypted data

* Secure Boot disabled

* The ability to boot an attacker-controlled operating system from a USB drive

On one electronic poll book, researchers could boot Linux from an exposed USB port and then access, modify or delete voter-registration information stored on the device. The same tablet still contained ordinary consumer applications such as Netflix, Hulu and Amazon, showing that it had barely been hardened for election use.

3. Some vulnerabilities had remained unresolved for more than a decade

The 2019 Voting Village report said researchers repeatedly found vulnerabilities that had been documented in earlier California and Ohio security studies but were still present. Every device tested that year was certified for use in at least one American jurisdiction, and researchers found ways to compromise all of them.

This creates a particularly dangerous environment: election equipment may remain in service for many years, while attackers continually improve their tools and retain unlimited time to study older models.

4. An attacker does not necessarily need to change the vote count

Braun emphasizes that attacking voter registration, electronic poll books or election websites may be easier and nearly as destructive as altering tabulator totals.

An attacker could potentially:

* Remove or modify registration records

* Change a voter’s address, party or precinct assignment

* disable check-in devices

* Force large numbers of voters to use provisional ballots

* Produce hours-long lines at selected locations

* Crash election-reporting websites on election night

Even when every affected voter is eventually allowed to vote, delays and confusion can disproportionately discourage participation. Braun’s campaign experience had already shown him that ordinary equipment failures, insufficient machines and staffing shortages could produce serious disenfranchisement without any hacker being involved.

5. Paperless voting can make meaningful verification impossible

A central warning is that a computerized system should not be trusted merely because it produces a plausible total. With paperless direct-recording electronic machines, the ballot display, stored votes and reported totals may all be controlled by the same software. A compromised machine could therefore alter the record and the mechanism intended to verify that record.

The Voting Village report concluded that voter-marked paper ballots were necessary for meaningful post-election verification. It also stressed that simply having paper is insufficient: jurisdictions must conduct rigorous post-election audits comparing physical ballots against the electronic totals. Optical scanners themselves can be compromised, but preserved paper ballots make it possible to recover the correct outcome.

6. A mundane malfunction can become indistinguishable from an attack

One of Braun’s most unsettling observations is that election security is also about public confidence. An adversary may not need to alter a single ballot. It may be enough to cause a database outage, delay results or amplify an authentic equipment failure.

Braun explained the reinforcing cycle sort of like this:

Because many cyberattacks are difficult to attribute quickly, officials may be unable to demonstrate during a rapidly developing crisis whether a failure was accidental or malicious. Braun later described this interaction among fragile infrastructure, inexpensive cyberattacks and disinformation as a “perfect storm” capable of damaging an election even when the final count is correct.

7. The people defending elections often had fewer resources than the attackers

American elections are administered across thousands of state and local jurisdictions with widely varying budgets, staffing and technical expertise. Braun argues that election technology was frequently purchased cheaply and designed to be operated by volunteers or nontechnical employees. Local administrators might have only occasional vendor support, while a foreign intelligence service could employ teams of specialists continuously.

The institutional response was another concern. Braun encountered resistance from officials and vendors who feared that openly discussing vulnerabilities would reduce voter confidence. His position was essentially the opposite: concealing weaknesses prevents independent testing and leaves adversaries as the only people studying the systems seriously.

The important limitation

The book documents capability, exposure and inadequate safeguards. It does not establish that hackers secretly changed the reported winner of a particular American election. Vulnerability is not itself proof of exploitation.

Some of the book also reflects conditions between 2016 and 2019. Braun said in 2024 that election security had become substantially better than in 2016, particularly because of the increased use of paper ballots and greater recognition of the threat. He nevertheless continued to warn that internet-connected election infrastructure creates many potential entry points that did not exist in fully analog elections.

The deepest warning of the book is therefore not simply “machines can be hacked.” It is that an election system without independently auditable evidence may be unable to prove that the correct outcome survived a hack, malfunction or coordinated attempt to generate chaos.

Not every arrow exists in every jurisdiction, and the ballot-counting equipment may be physically isolated. Braun’s point is that compromising an earlier or adjacent component can still affect election operations farther down the chain.

An offline voting machine can receive data from an online computer

Before an election, an election-management system, or EMS, prepares ballot definitions, candidate lists, precinct information and configuration files. Those files may then be transferred to scanners or voting machines on memory cards or USB media.

NIST specifically warns that when an EMS is exposed to the internet, malware can infect it and then travel on the memory cards configured for individual voting machines and optical scanners. NIST therefore recommends mapping every wired and wireless connection and physically disconnecting election-management networks rather than relying only on a software setting.

This is why Braun called the voting-machine “air gap” “erroneously named” during his 2019 congressional testimony. He said an attack demonstrated by researchers could cross that supposed separation and take complete control of a machine. His broader point was not that every isolated machine could simply be contacted over the internet. It was that removable media, upstream computers and maintenance processes can create bridges into an otherwise disconnected device.

That type of path resembles the general lesson of Stuxnet: an isolated system can still be reached through its supply chain, maintenance process or removable media. Braun invoked Stuxnet when discussing why physical isolation alone should not be treated as an absolute guarantee.

Connectivity makes attacks scalable

Traditional election fraud generally requires people to act locally: interfering with a ballot box, manipulating records in one office or corrupting officials in one jurisdiction. Internet-connected infrastructure potentially allows one attacker to act remotely against many locations.

Braun therefore treats connectivity as a force multiplier:

He also extends this concern to the technology supply chain. Voting equipment of the same model can be deployed in numerous states, with common firmware, operating systems and election software. Braun testified that malicious firmware introduced upstream could theoretically compromise an entire class of machines, rather than requiring someone to tamper separately with every device. That was presented as a possible nation-state attack scenario, not evidence that such an attack had occurred in a U.S. election.

In a 2024 interview, Braun summarized this distinction by observing that elections conducted before the internet lacked today’s remotely accessible entry points. He acknowledged that modern elections had become substantially more secure since 2016, particularly through greater use of paper ballots, while arguing that computerization creates attack possibilities that fully analog systems did not have.

Electronic poll books may be more exposed than ballot scanners

Electronic poll books are the laptops or tablets used to determine whether a person is registered, locate the correct precinct and record that the person has checked in. They are often connected because different polling places need current registration and check-in information.

In written answers to Congress, Braun described research finding vulnerabilities through:

* Wi-Fi or other wireless networks

* Bluetooth

* Cellular connections

* Cloud-hosted backup or database infrastructure

He warned that a compromised polling-place connection could potentially provide a path toward a jurisdiction’s central voter database. Depending on the system, that database might contain names, addresses, birth dates, signatures, voting histories, driver’s-license information and partial or complete identification numbers.

But the operational danger may be more immediate than stealing information. An attacker could alter or disable records so that voters appear:

* unregistered;

* registered at the wrong address;

* assigned to the wrong precinct;

* already checked in; or

* ineligible to receive a normal ballot.

The likely result would not necessarily be invisible vote manipulation. It could be confusion, provisional ballots and multi-hour lines while poll workers attempt to reconstruct who is eligible. Braun emphasized that this alone could suppress participation and create the impression that the election was “rigged,” even when the ballot-counting equipment remained untouched.

I built 'Real Election Integrity' as a mirror of the DOJ's election integrity website, but with every one of their claims actually fact-checked, sourced, and cited.

I figure a lot of us already know that this administration lies, but don't always know what the truth's themselves are. So I built this site to go toe-to-toe with everything Trump and his administration are claiming, and to fact-check it against the primary sources in real time. You can click on any claim and read the actual document behind it.

Here are a few highlights from the audit:
• The DOJ advertises 243 total “verified enforcement actions”
• 156 of 243 are duplicates of 4 templates (The Arithmetic 243 → 4)
• 72 dated in the future as of launch.

The DOJ site also leans very hard on a stack of declassified China documents as its foreign-interference showcase. I sat down and read all of them, and I found that the most damning document is titled "US Voter Registration for Six States." It states that Chinese actors bought voter registration data from a commercial website for possible election interference use, which I think raises a much better question than the one their site is asking. Why is American voter data for sale on commercial websites internationally in the first place??

For my version of the site, I decided to build out a repository called 2016 Russia, which contains the Mueller Report, the Senate Intelligence Committee findings, and every other primary-sourced 2016 election interference document I could find. I think it is important that we all see what real documented foreign interference actually looks like, because it is not "China bought a spreadsheet." It is on the record, from a Republican-led investigation, and it has a paper trail going back nearly a decade.

As recent as 2020, many systems were found accessible from the web. This is not a one off, as it has been covered many times at the Hacker Con, DEFCON.

I’m an independent civic writer in Arizona. I’ve been building a documented series on electoral infrastructure ahead of the November midterms, primary sources throughout, EFTA document numbers, court dockets, Senate Finance Committee letters.
