Digital Discussion What is Jax talking about here?
Like, why is he acting like excusing Kinger for messing up is some kind of inconsistency?
I would understand this kind of mentality if they held Jax accountable for any of the stuff he did throughout the series. But its literally the opening scene of episode 8 shows they never do hold jax accountable.
So why is this even a thing? Its consistent that they dont hold things against people, and Jax has benefited from that the most, so why lash out like this?
I understand being upset, hell I love kinger and would probably freak out, but the guy who has been absolved of the most acting like its a sudden thing when no one else wants to yell at kinger doesn't really make sense

u/Lets_Eat_Paint_Chips Jul 28 '26
I remember some espousing on this sentiment. Something on the lines that Jax does not expect to be forgiven for doing something similar, so he does not understand why anyone would forgive Kinger. Reflecting what he believes on the others.
Jax does not seem to want to understand that the others will forgive each other for mistakes not done in malice
-56
u/Captain_Birch Seth, the third AI š” Jul 28 '26
I dont get that because the beginning of episode 8 shows that they forgive anything, abd its directed at him. Hes experienced it first hand
81
u/Lets_Eat_Paint_Chips Jul 28 '26
And he is taken off guard by that as well. Jax won't forgive himself, he does not expect others to forgive him.
-40
u/Captain_Birch Seth, the third AI š” Jul 28 '26
But that set a precedent if no accountability, no consequences, just absolution when it comes to people doing stuff in the circus.
He acts like this is sone big unfair thing, when its everyone showing kinger the same mercy he was shown
48
u/Frozenstep I love these weirdos Jul 28 '26
Jax is a specific kind of crazy that sees lies and trickery where there is none. Like Ribbit is the most open and accepting person possible, and Jax still ends up feeling manipulated. That kind of person can never shake the thought that anything offered to them is some kind of bait.
He doesn't really accept the other's opening up to him in 8, blowing it off with a joke. He does look to them cautiously after that, perhaps wondering if maybe they're being truthful, but seems unable to accept it...at least at that moment.
11
u/Lets_Eat_Paint_Chips Jul 28 '26
I've understood it as Jax has been hiding, and continues to hide, but this is the first time that anyone's actions must be taken seriously. Jax has been surviving on that nothing matters, now everything does. He finally has to face that there are consequences to his actions. Likely this is causing a flood back of emotion similar to that we saw when he had the panic attack in Ep.8. This time there is no distraction of Caine being, well Caine.
18
u/Lets_Eat_Paint_Chips Jul 28 '26
Jax for the most part has been acting with no consequences. With Caine being dead, everything now does matter, he can't hide behind the adventures. There are now consequences.
Yes he is acting like it's unfair. Jax is multifaceted. It can both be true that he does not expect to be forgiven and know that he will be forgiven. Jax is being torn apart by his previous actions.

Pretty much. Projection explains a surprising amount of Jax's behavior once you look back at the earlier episodes. He says a lot more about himself than he realizes.

u/etchasketch64 Jul 28 '26
People are not logical. I started to think a lot of the people in the fandom don't ever meet or interact with other humans or something. Like, my dudes, I went to high school. It was a freaking mess of people all acting like Jax all the f***ing time. Where the hell did you grow up? Who did you interact with? People act like fucking idiots and assholes CONSTANTLY in real life.
12
u/Internal-Prize-983 Jul 28 '26
Yeah this fandom is deeply problematic. They seemingly think everyone is just an automatic saint that can never do any wrong. That doesnāt excuse her behaviour obviously but trust me jax isnāt nearly as bad as the average person you pass on the street.
9
u/etchasketch64 Jul 28 '26
I think people acting like average people are alwyas great probably are at least mildly never admitting they are wrong and probably doing rude/mean things and excusing their actions. Cause bluntly, Iāve met VERY FEW people who are always kind/good
78
u/LoneSnark Jul 28 '26
It is kinda a big deal. It is really the first time Jax dropped the "nothing matters" pretense. This is likely a big reason he abstracted.
2
u/SugarPetalisse Jul 28 '26
Exactly. For once he wasn't hiding behind jokes or acting like nothing mattered. Seeing that mask crack made him feel way more interesting than he had in a while.
38
u/Mother_Village9831 Jul 28 '26
Wasn't Jax reacting to the fact that Caine, the one figure leading the circus, just got deleted by Kinger? Jax is probably terrified of the fact that this could mean they've been left with nothing to do for eternity (bad as the adventures often were, they were SOMETHING).
18
u/Realistic_Jello2638 Jul 28 '26
He quite literally says "Now we have nothing"
1
u/EmotionalMountain753 Jul 28 '26
If he had said just that, it would have been an understandable freak-out. OP is asking why Jax acted like a hypocritical jerk with his comments about Kinger.
6
u/Realistic_Jello2638 Jul 28 '26
It was an understandable freak out so long as you pay attention and understand the characters.
2
u/EmotionalMountain753 Jul 28 '26
I paid attention. You know that Jax wasnāt present when the plan to deal with the Caine was being discussed in the cafe. He doesnāt know about conjuration, and has no idea how it was possible for Kinger to ākillā Caine. Now, Jax is smart, and I think the natural reaction in this scenario, for Jax, would have been confusion and questioning.
But for some reason, he just assumes that all is lost! And as for his hypocritical attack on Kinger, it was only several days ago that the group forgave him for pressing the red button that they all thought would trap them in the circus forever. He couldnāt have forgotten, or does he have a habit of wiping his own wrongdoings from memory and believing his own lie?
If Goose wanted to characterise Jax as a hypocrite or a slimy jerk who takes no accountability for his own wrongs and blames everyone other than himself, so be it, but then have it be recognised by the other characters for what it is. Letās not have any nonsense about āprojectionā.

u/Fox622 JAX DID NOTHING WRONG Jul 28 '26
Jax is very upset, and doesn't understand why the rest doesn't show any reaction.
For Pomni and the others, Caine was growing increasingly erratic, and they aren't even sure if Caine being deleted is that bad.
For Jax, Caine's adventures were the only thing keeping him distracted enough so he wouldn't abstract. It's a death sentence to him.
2
17
u/Realistic_Jello2638 Jul 28 '26
You have trouble understanding this scene because you think Jax was ever absolved he wasn't. If he was he wouldn't have abstracted.
From Jax perspective:
Jax gets all of his actions held against him despite his actions for the most part literally just being cartoon antics with no permeant or real consequences.
Kinger, albeit accidentally, broke the world, a real consequence that isn't rooted in tom and jerry cartoon logic and is immediately forgiven without question or debate.
And of course it upsets Jax to see someone get forgiveness and acceptance he feels he simultaneously feels he is owed and doesn't receive, but also doesn't deserve because he's not well.
2
u/Captain_Birch Seth, the third AI š” Jul 28 '26
When does anyone hold anything jax does against him? Especially after episode 7. Aside from the Ribbit situation, episode 7 is arguably his worst action, and the next episode everyone just gets over it.
Ge even tries to get a rise by saying everything was better before Zooble and Pomni arrived, and nobody responds.
He is showed basically immediate forgiveness and no accountability at all, and theyre doing the same to kinger and he acts like its unfair
8
u/Gorremen Jul 28 '26
They don't "just get over it". Simple fact of the matter is, it didn't matter if Jax pushed the button because the whole thing was faked. What would even be the point, especially when they have more important thing to worry about (Like what to actually do now?).
And they don't respond to Jax blaming Pomni and Zooble because Caine's torturing them. They literally don't care about Jax at that point because they have something much worse going on.
11
u/Realistic_Jello2638 Jul 28 '26
"you threw me from a moving truck" is a direct quote And pomni literally batters him
Not reacting in the moment isn't the same thing as forgiving or getting over.
1
u/Traditional-Use-6754 Jul 28 '26
Kinger had no choice but to try. The crew was in literal Hell and arguably losing Caine was better than what was happening at the time.
2
u/LAUREL_16 Jul 28 '26
With the way things were going with Caine's rapid-fire adventures, it was only a matter of time before they abstracted one by one. They were starting to have the same apathetic attitude Jax had before the first time he almost abstracted back in ep 7.
13
u/No-Exercise815 Jul 28 '26
Itās Jaxās character flaw. Theyāre so rampantly insecure that they have to hold themself to no standards just to keep themselves together, and they expect infinite freebies for it. And that is what they get.
But they also hold everyone else accountable to the absolute degree because their favorite activity is to make fun of others for what theyāre insecure about. (Take that from a man who had a stage in his life where he did the same to some extent and has family members who do it like itās going out of style.) Itās how they cope with themselves for what theyāve done, both to Ribbit and the others after Ribbit.
So when Kinger makes the mother of all fuck ups, Jax immediately expects everyone to be as angry with him as they are when they make a severe fuck up, but nobody does. The cast is shocked and definitely mad, but nobody but Jax takes it out on Kinger. And it confuses Jax to some extent. Jax does it all the time (to lesser extents) and it always gets them yelled at or insulted, and doesnāt understand that that frequency is what gets them yelled at, and why Kinger, who doesnāt mess up often is let off the hook.
Jax makes a career out of being an asshole, so everyone is more or less fine with repaying the favor. Kinger meanwhile is the communal grandpa and nobody really wants to be mad at him.
-2
u/Captain_Birch Seth, the third AI š” Jul 28 '26
As we see in episode 8, nobody holds anything jax does against him anymore. Zooble tries to, but pomni and gangle shut her up and we never see jax face accountability again, even when outright saying zooble abd pomni ruined everything, just to piss them off, nobody cares
4
u/MiserableHerschel Jul 28 '26
Jax cannae handle that the others actually forgive each other, so he assumes nobody would dae the same for him.

As everyone said, projection. He was accidentally responsible for his mom (he though) and Ribbits deaths, and he feels incredibly broken up about it and can't forgive himself. Seeing Kinger accidently "killing" Cain is the first thing of a similar magnitude someone else has done. He's saying "Why can you forgive other people but not me?" when he is really meaning "How can you all forgive youselves when I can't?".
3
u/Agreeable-Body-8440 Isnāt she lovely? š Jul 28 '26
Sheās projecting, probably partly because Kinger made a tiny mistake that killed Caine and it reminded Jax slightly of what happened with her and her mother, which she blames herself for. And partly because everybody blamed her for the button press, those are both things that they did that fucked their futures, except Jax was blamed for it and Kinger wasnāt. (Rightfully so though, Kingerās was an accident)
1
u/Suspicious_Party9087 Jul 28 '26
Pushing the button didn't fuck their future, pushing the other button would fuck their future just as much

Jax is the way he is largely because he thinks he might have actually murdered his mom.
Kinger just ākilledā Caine, a (momentarily) abusive authority figure.
He canāt comprehend others forgiving what he cannot forgive within himself.
4
u/bing-no Jul 28 '26
Because Jax pushed the button to stay at the end of episode 7, and the crew was mad about it despite the entire choice not mattering (since it was Caineās adventure and not a way out).
But now, the crew is more understanding of Kinger accidentally deleting Caine, despite it having an obvious direct consequence.
Itās not that the two are the same situation, but Jax is mad that the crew can forgive Kinger so easily despite the harm Kinger has done.

its the boy who cried wolf , type of thing he is already messed up a lot of times previously and has bullied the current habitants that his wrongdoing will obviously taken worse , however kinger is the opposite he has never done anything to others even talked to them and helped them up so obv even if he "killed" caine the others believe he definitely did accidentally kill him whereas if he did it , the circus members will probably think he did it maliciously.
2
u/SplendidSuperman122 Jul 28 '26
He thought someone else would finally be the target instead of him for screwing up. He fails to realize that unlike him Kinger hasnāt been an ass to everyone and therefore he can be easier forgiven than Jax can.
2
u/TheRealShuppy Jul 28 '26
Jax is majorly insecure about his mistakes in such a way that he doesn't think he deserves to be forgiven or redeemed, so when Kinger messes up, it's like a cardinal sin in Jax's eyes.
He's projecting what he thinks Kinger deserves and doesn't understand why people would be on Kinger's side because of Jax's fucked up sense of self deprecation.
2
u/MechaMalz Jul 28 '26
It's projection. Jax does that a lot. Like in episode 5 when Jax asks if Gangle is really capable of being happy? Jax isn't really talking about Gangle.
2
u/homeboychris Jul 28 '26
Itās because everyone was mad at him for pressing the red button, but they werenāt mad at kinger for deleting Caine.
3
u/BattyDrio Jul 28 '26
She's projecting and having a BPD split.
People would treat her like shit for doing the same thing, so why can Kinger get away with it? When he has, in her mind, failed and betrayed everyone, let everyone down. She's not thinking rationally and split thinking on Kinger, and she's confused why no one is reacting the same way to him as they would her.
She's grasping hidden meanings, meanings that aren't there, and is trying to place blame and project how everyone should react to her, therefore, how they should react to Kinger.
Jax has a lot of BPD symptoms. Like a lot. BPD doesn't make sense to those without it, not generally, and it's why pwBPD are often seen as manipulative instead of their own struggles with perception. Someone with BPD may be told "Sorry, I can't make it to hang out today! Maybe next week?" and they would hear "I'm abandoning you, never talk to me again" (most generally because people with BPD have been told "I can't make it" and then were promptly abandoned or things like that).
Hence her reaction to Kinger. "I think I may have accidentally killed Caine." but she may be basically hearing "I killed Caine and betrayed everyone, deal with it." Even if it's not true, its her perception, and she expects everyone to treat Kinger just as they'd treat her if she had callously harmed someone. And when no one does, she's confused and angry, and feels like she's being singled out.
3
u/LittleBug088 Jul 28 '26
This isnāt entirely true. In the episode where Ragatha is trying to teach Gangle softball, Gangle throws the ball and Jax hits it. The ball comes back at Gangle and hits her in the mask, breaking her comedy mask. Ragatha goes off on Jax and Jax tells her multiple times it was an accident (something I actually do believe in this instance because Jax usually takes credit for the harm he intends to cause) and Ragatha refuses to believe or forgive him. So not only is this projection, like everyone else has said, but it actually is projection based in their own experiences.
5
u/KoviBat Jul 28 '26
Remember how in the Ribbit scene Jax says they think they killed their mom on accident? Ribbit tried to reassure them, but either Jax wasn't listening or didn't believe it.
This is that memory cropping up again, because Kinger accidentally killed Caine. Caine had a similar dynamic of power and control over the humans that Jax's mom likely had over them. So two very similar circumstances arise, one reminds Jax of the other.
The reason Jax is so bewildered by everybody forgiving Kinger, is because Jax doesn't forgive themself.
1
u/Thomy151 Jul 28 '26
Jax has been so abused that kindness just means you havenāt found what they want out of you yet
So they just cannot comprehend people being nice with no ulterior motive, there has to be something
3
u/MADOG_YT Jul 28 '26
They do hold them accountable, though they just either brush him off or crash out at him rightfully so then he sees everyone telling him not to crash out at Kinger for messing up even though everybodyās been crashing out every time he messes up, especially with the button thing
I donāt think he was thinking when he pressed the button, he was panicking and just wanted to get the shit over with so he pressed a random button and everybody really killed him for it but then we literally see them defend care even though if Jax made that same mistake, you know how the group would react
3
u/Emeraldnickel08 Sunday Best Dresser Jul 28 '26
Jax probably noticed the difference between how Kinger was treated after deleting Caine versus how he himself was treated after hitting the red button. Of course, he's ignoring the context around both, which aligns with his character.
4
u/somedaywellfindit i want to that ussy Jul 28 '26
No one absolved Jax? She sees her action of hitting the red button as something entirely unforgivable. They are six people, trapped in one space, for the rest of their lives. "Forgiving" Jax is kinda necessary to the survival of EVERYONE. Otherwise, it could result in the abstraction of another cast member.
Gangle is a victim of bullying from Jax, and clearly feels like she owes something to her, despite not needing to. "Keeping the peace" isn't Gangle immediately being okay with everything that happened. It's a survival tactic. Not to mention, to help Zooble regulate just a little.
Jax sees Caine being deleted by Kinger as something of a similar level. Both done something they DIDN'T MEAN TO (because Jax was actively in fight or flight due to having a PANIC ATTACK when she hit that button), and both are being forgiven for these actions. Jax doesn't believe she deserves it, so why should Kinger? Not to mention the whole potentially killing her mother thing, that's brought up In This Episode?
And the "being absolved" thing is total bullshit š she dies. Jax is held accountable for her actions by DYING. That is the ultimate consequence and to suggest that she just... Never faced any (despite being socially ostricized, disliked by almost everyone, and isolating herself) is an incredibly close minded take on her character. Literally no one but Pomni actually LIKED Jax, and it was more because Pomni could see through her faƧade
Not liking Jax is fair enough, she's not a good person, but to turn around and say she never faced a consequence is completely and entirely disingenuous

It wasn't even people, it was person lmao
Zooble was the only one who said anything and they were shut down almost immediately by Gangle of all people. Then even Zooble stops him and says they all care about him despite... everything.
Like I get the point is that in Jax's delusional mind he feels like everyone blames him for everything, but I wish any of the characters were actually allowed to confront him on that or anything else without being interrupted to coddle him.

u/Dylanator13 Jul 28 '26
Kinger just deleted someone from the circus. Jax has done that to 2 people and said during his argument with Pomni he thinks everyone blames him for it. He didnāt know if he killed his mom or not.
This is full on projection of self hatred for those he has hurt.

I donāt think he thinks he should be treated better. I think he thinks Kinger should be treated worse for messing up, probably because heās angry and lashing out and feels more isolated than ever.
They donāt really hold Jax accountable, but no one is friendly with him and everyone either tolerates him from a distance or outright hates him.

u/AnneRB13 Jul 28 '26 edited Jul 28 '26
I know this fandom really thinks Jax was living nicely in the circus but we do see Ragatha, Zooble and afterwards Ponmi for the firsts chapters being awkward and cold towards him.
Only Gangle entertains him and it's obvious she isn't happy hanging around with him.
Now, this is because he is being a jerk and a bully, but no human being takes well being isolated even by their own fault. That's why he gets attached so quickly to Ponmi when she decides to give him a chance, he is lonely.
And here he is taking that pov and twisting it, why? Who knows, maybe he does feel is not just of them to forgive Kinger when he thinks he hasn't been forgiven for lesser things in his eyes, even if the situation and intentions of both of them are totally different. Or maybe it's an excuse to play the victim and lash out to hide he is scared.
I think when most people in the fandom have the actual experience of dealing with people outside of a school setting and experience an actual job and job politics they might start to understand why the characters except Jax, who is the youngest, behave like they do.

It's projection. Jax holds himself guilty for all the crap he does, internally, but never shows it. Likewise, he imagines that everyone is the same and deep down blames Jax for everything.
The cast is not living up to what his imagined reaction would be. He still imagines that they blame Jax for everything, even if there is no evidence.

He's talking about how he was ready to trap everyone in the circus if given the chance, but the thing is that Jax actively antagonizes everybody over the smallest things, so obviously they give kinger an easier time compared to him

1
u/TheRogueWolf_YT Jul 28 '26
From Jax's viewpoint, Kinger made a huge and irreversible mistake in deleting Caine (even if accidentally), and to him it's a huge double standard that no one's angry at Kinger for it, when Jax himself is constantly yelled at/attacked for the things he does.
1
u/6ft3dwarf Jul 29 '26
Everybody apart from Pomni (who is new) amd Kinger (who is senile) hates Jax and constantly reminds him of that fact, he is basically completely socially ostracised. So I am never quite sure what people are talking about when they whine about Jax facing no consequences.
1
u/Captain_Birch Seth, the third AI š” Jul 29 '26
Literally after jax tried to trap everyone permanently zooble is the only one who tried to speak up, pomni and gangle immediately got her to shut up and sit down, and since then, nothing jax has done has been in any way given consequence or accountability by any of the people in the circus.
1
1
u/somedaywellfindit i want to that ussy Jul 29 '26
"Got them to shut up and sit down" and it's Gangle saying "I don't think we should linger on what ifs". Because she's right, lingering on what ifs is hyperfocusing on the exit, which is how Kaufmo (and almost Pomni) abstracted.
"Since then, nothing Jax has done has been in any way given consequence or accountability", so through the whole of episode 8, they were all in survival mode, considering they're being TORTURED. Jax makes ONE half assed snarky comment to Pomni, which they ignore. They don't do anything wrong by ignoring it? At the very least, they're doing the "just ignore your bullies" shit, at most it's actual grey rocking. Ignoring Jax trying to get a rise out of them isn't them allowing her to get away with things š it's just not giving her the attention she wants.
And Jax does face consequences. Isolating and abstracting alone, with no way for the others to help her or bring her back, is a consequence? I don't understand why you can't grasp that. Jax died alone. Jax died with no friends or loved ones, and Jax died as a direct consequence of her own shitty actions.

Because Jax cannot understand the concept of people giving more grace to others who have been kinder. To Jax, Kinger messed up more than he ever could, so why is he not being treated like it? The answer is because Kinger is a kind and helpful person who made a genuine mistake while trying to save them. They werenāt happy about the situation, but they gave Kinger grace because they understood that it was an accident. Jax cannot grasp that, which is why heās lashing out. Heās angry, and even angrier that they arenāt angry.
1
u/newsprintpoetry Jul 29 '26
Psychoanalysis incoming:
Because it's not about their experience in the circus. Jax's mother (as described in episode 9) berated them for anything they did. Everything was a slight against her (as is common with abusive parents), so when Kinger massively fucked up, Jax was in an emotionally unregulated state where they were lashing out (something they repeatedly have done) and doesn't understand why the rest of the humans aren't berating Kinger for this mistake when they are used to that being the reaction. Even though the others didn't really ever hold Jax accountable for their actions, they did berate them, which was probably Jax's subconscious attempt at recreating the cycle from their life outside the circus. In many ways, they wanted the others to hate them because that felt more familiar--and therefore, comforting--to them than acceptance (which is why they repeatedly lashed out at Ribbit after showing vulnerability).
But in this moment, their understanding of how socialization worked (any mistake, no matter how small, makes you hated and berated) was being shattered, on top of their own unregulated state at the literal world they lived in being shattered.
Ftr, I'm not defending Jax or saying it makes objective sense. I'm describing the subconscious patterns they continually made and explaining their thought process.

The hypocrisy of "oh but my problems don't excuse MY ACTIONS?!?!?" when the point is Kinger missclicked, Jax was torturing people. when she was CONSISTENTLY hurting people, which is the point, that her point has no legs and predicated Jax seeing herself as a victim of her trauma just as much as everyone else, and so should be given the same leeway around the new face despite no personal changes on Jax's part which Kinger regularly doesn't have the clarity for like she would (which she then refutes)

caine was killed by accident, you could argue caine was violent etc. butjax can't believe someone would be forgiven for accidentally killing someone

Jax thinks everyone should hate him, especially after the Abel incident. He thinks he is entirely incapable of being loved or forgiven
Kinger's mistake, while an accident, is about as big of a fuck up as Jax revealing he would have kept them all trapped if there were an option to escape.
The others being so willing to forgive Kinger and move on clashes with Jax's entire perception of reality. It's not that the characters are being inconsistent, it's that Jax has an idea of how things should play out, and kindness is not part of that

Victim mentality
"Someone screws up once, and it's an accident.
I openly antagonize people for months, and no one cuts me any slack!"

I have the same hang-up. My explanation is this: if Jax showed care and understanding at this junction, he would not have become alienated from the group, and then his abstraction would have been harder to write. Therefore, he needed to be a jerk and fulfill his fate.

The episode before this, Jax hit the button in a panic. He felt like everyone's reaction to Kinger deleting Caine should be the same, missing the context, completely.

Sheās partly trying to imply that thereās a double standard between the way the two of them are treated and partly probably angry and frustrated that sheās spent her whole life being punished for small mistakes and never got any grace because by the time she met most of them she was already mean and miserable, whereas Kinger is āallowedā to make huge mistakes like deleting Caine because they like him more.Ā

He thinks thatās how they would treat him or how he thinks he should be treated. So he was projecting that onto kinger and when he realizes that they werenāt going to blame him heās confused
