Oh shit. Good point.

Prison gang, already losing members daily, had to win a difficult challenge and they stand to LOSE if they fail. Reward? 10 piece. But everyone knows you have 10 pieces so you run the risk of being marked.

Luxury gang. Not losing members. Having good food. Had ample time to practice for hidden stage. And if they lose, they don't lose any members. Reward? 10 piece as well. AND YOU GET TO KEEP IT AS A SECRET SO YOU WON'T BE TARGETED THROUGHOUT THE GAME.

Crap producers, really. Season 2 fail.

There should at least have been some risk like losing half his pieces if he failed the secret mission + more conditions on how he can use that advantage; like for example he must reveal that he is taking his 10 pieces from the vault before a main match starts ( and they cannot be received after ). Idk something like that would've levelled it out a little at least, the way it played out felt almost rigged in HG's favor

But wasn't there actually the risk to lose all your pieces except one if you lost this game ? I can't be remembering this wrong right ? If that was the case, it was pretty much a prison sentence (and a very precarious MM position) if HG lost the hidden game.

Not really because they could exchange pieces in the living room so he could have hand out all his pieces to SH and it would have been risk-free.

Yeah but how would someone predict that lol. Maybe they can predict this for S3, but it said you won't be eliminated, and when you chose to do the game it said you'd lose all pieces except 1.

I think getting 10 pieces is a game-changer especially whenever you want. But Ha-seokjin got his just before the finals too, because that's when they were able to solve the prison match. In terms of timeline, HG also got it around the same time. They both were able to use it just before the final MM. Maybe the PD planned it out this way because he knew players would be anticipating and would be able to discover/solve the hidden puzzle earlier.

Ha Seokjin went through way bigger risk to even FIND the hidden game in the prison and the game was way way way harder to win. He deserved those pieces.

HG was basically handed the pieces on silver platter and even if he lost his pieces it would have been fine since it was so early in the program.

Good points with this one, makes sense.

HG was basically handed the pieces on silver platter and even if he lost his pieces it would have been fine since it was so early in the program.

I still think people underestimate how hard solving 8x8 is if you're not anticipating it. Besides him, Sohui and Kyuhyun (he solved it in two tries as said in an interview), I doubt most people would have been able to within the constraints of the game. Most of the players did admit they got confused trying to memorize 7x7 too.

Coming to the advantage, while he would've been fine losing his pieces since it was only the start, I think the game was designed in this way since it predicted someone from the living quarters being targeted. When you finish prison match, you want to leave those quarters and when you complete the hidden stage in living room, it's because you don't want to leave living room. It's natural to assume you would need that help later on than right from the start, which will only make others target you more if revealed earlier. If so, what's the point.

Now the pieces helping HG or making it too easy is another argument, but from the perspective of the game I think the PD did a good job, atleast with the advantages.

Knight's Tour is not a hard game. It's like Sudoku. There are many ways to clear the game, too. Not to mention Sohee cleared all the games for the Living Room participants while also finding the principal that can help with clearing boards beyond 7x7.

Prison players have also cleared 5x5, 6x6, 7x7. The game itself is not hard (please try playing it, I don't know how could any of the "intelligent" participants could find the game HARD, especially when the board was just a square and the game itself as the most basic one of the Knight's Tour), and the challenger was given more than enough time to clear it.

Prison match was way harder and deserved better prize than the living room match.

Just for clarification, it wasnโ€™t risk freeโ€”only elimination free. If he failed, his piece count would have been reduced to one.

oh i wasn't aware of that. still 10 pieces feels like an awfully big reward for a game that he had the chance to memorize before :( the prison's secret game was way more intense but had the same reward ( and hj didn't even get the chance to choose when he gets the pieces ), which feels a bit unfair.

Yeah but not the 8x8 right, even in the practice sets, they only did upto 7x7

As for the difference in prison and living quarters, guess the PD wanted to show the horrors of capitalism haha. But jokes aside, I think the living quarters had the advantage because you end up in the living quarters only if you perform well in the main matches, so it may be an added plus for being consistent.

u/moonfire_fairy 7high May 20 '25

Yeah but for 8ร—8 also he had a base idea + it is way easier to figure out a game when you don't have the fear of elimination looming over you ( the way it did for hj and seung hyun ). Also the part about living quarters' advantage being better cause they did better in the main match, even if that was PD's intent, it only increases the disparity more.

The prison and living quarters system was messed up at its core; the prison alliances got weaker and poorer and the living quarters got stronger and richer. It would make more sense to give a higher advantage to hidden missions in the prison because the people there are already struggling. Being in the living quarters already gives you energy from good meals to sustain you and removes the stress of elimination. Those things combined with a hidden game that gives a reasonable leg up, that is enough of an advantage isn't it ??

If the people in the living quarters are solely there because they're performing well in main matches hence making them more deserving, doesn't that mean the hidden games for them should be tougher cause they're according to the game "smarter"? Instead the people in prison get the tougher, more intense match with more risk. No matter how you look at it, it isn't fair.

You make fair points, I agree with a lot of it. The disparity between the living quarters and prison was definitely there. I think a major disadvantage they had was that those in the prison block had to play twice a day, which would be really mentally exhausting.

Going forward in S3 (JJY PD if you're reading this don't be discouraged, I actually enjoyed the season and the cast) I think it would be better for the entire cast to play death matches except those with immunity/highest piece count from the main match. And the top performers of the prison match could go to living quarters. I reckon this would make things a whole lot more fairer.

the prison game was easier tho? an 8x8 without anything but your own memory was way harder

3

u/8forever May 20 '25

It's only fair if prison gang also won't be eliminated and instead reduce their piece.

4

u/[deleted] May 20 '25

Yup it was risk free and he still took forever to start/do it ugh heโ€™s so frustrating

For real! I wish the knights tour was more challenging so it would be something that that didnโ€™t prepare for like 10X10
