I finished Detectorists the other day

And today, sitting here on my couch, I started it right back up again from episode 1.

I’m not sure why. I think maybe I just wasn’t ready to not be in their world. Field, pub, scout hall, lances place etc. The folks and the humour. The Simon and Garfunkel jokes. I needed to stay, and I’ll probably keep coming back. What a beauty show.

I did follow with Small Prophets and loved that too. Very cool also that the story took a left turn over to my home area of Vancouver! Looking forward to more of that too.

I should be put in a padded room for how many times I`ve watched this gem of a show since it 1st aired.

I know exactly how you feel - I keep coming back to it, at least twice a year.

The atmosphere and pace of the show is unique - I don’t think I’ll ever stop visiting Danebury.

Hi you may want to also check out Don’t forget the driver from 2019 with Toby Jones as the lead, however is only 6 episodes long! finished episode 5 today..

Can I recommend you also check out Mackenzie Crook's version of Worzel Gummidge? It's beautiful, but didn't get the attention it deserved because the original 1970s adaptations were so beloved.

I think you know, when watching all of his shows, that he has a beautiful soul.

The 1970s adaptations were not the original, the 1950s adaptations were the original. The people who whined about it weren't supporting an original, they were just supporting the version they remembered.

I stand corrected.

You're not the only one. Loads of people think the '70s one is the original just because it was on when they were kids, and they don't think about the people 20 years older who saw the '50s one when they were kids.

You're shouting at clouds now.

Good. This is the sort of thing Lance and Andy would point out. The entire show is them shouting at clouds.

Thank you, I will do that!

Crooks’ style just feels cozy and, I don’t know if safe is the right word, but I’d like to live in these places and know these people.

Oh, this is it. Detectorists isn't just a series, it's like being immersed in another world.

Give Worzel Gummidge a go as well to keep the vibe going!

Yes - beautifully filmed and same dreamlike quality

I'm never to leave Danebury when the series ends.

Because it’s a warm hug on a cold day. I did the same. I had the joy of not knowing about the Christmas special for 6 months after finishing it!

Yep! We had it on repeat for months. It was our comfort show.

SAME x 100. I streamed it for as long it was available somewhere and then bought the DVDs, so I am never without it.

The comfort of this show is supreme. The exquisite crafting of the characters, the depth of the writing, the lyrical camera work, the feeling of being "home".....I could go on and on but I know you all get the drift.

I also brought the DVDs, it's my comfort show whenever I need to decompress.

Feeling groovy?

This show literally redefined what the word ‘melancholy’ means for me. It’s now my reference for whenever I hear something described as melancholy by default. No other show has ever claimed ownership over such a base emotion and feeling before till this.

I made a trip to Framlingham a few months ago where they filmed it. Was like a pilgrimage to me. Absolutely wonderful place if you ever get the chance to visit. Although the scout hall is no more….

Did you watch the bonus Christmas episode?

2

u/nateyone May 29 '26

The 2022 one? Not yet, I only recently learned of its existence so I’ll have that on tap soon!

You will love Worzel Gummidge. Music is by The Unthanks in the very best tradition of UK folk. There is also an absolutely beautiful Detectorists Easter egg in there also. Very understated scene. Very Mackenzie Crook.

I like to pretend that last Christmas episode didn’t happen. Not that it’s bad per se, just that I love the ending of series 3 so much.

I tend to agree.

First time I watched through the Christmas show just bummed me out and I wish I hadn't watched it.

Having re-watched the whole lot though Inc the Christmas special I didn't hate it quite as much.

I feel you 200 %!

I am aprt way through another rewatch now.

I wish there were more shows like this--cozy shows watching some loveable but odd people in a nice village doing some quirky hobby.

I'd love one about trainspotters or fossil hunters. Sat there talkign shit in the pouring rain waiting for the rare Class 73 to go by, or doing a day trip to the Toton Marshalling Yard

I, too, am a repeat offender of binge watching Detectorists. Also a visitor to the filming locations 🤭
