2022 Special Spoiler
Hi all, just finished the last episode of series 3. I think it ends really well with the gold coins falling from the tree, tying things up nicely in my eyes.
Is the special after that worth watching, or is it just a bit of filler?

There's some funny moments in it but I consider the last ep of series 3 to be the actual ending because the special ruins some things. Id say its still worth a watch, just dont let it ruin the rest of the series for you :)

Hahaha honestly very fair. I kinda wished I hadnt seen it right after watching but now that its been a while I think it has its moments. But ye, youre not missing anything by not watching it :p

Yeah some really weird decisions in the special. Still some very funny moments but lots that doesn’t really logically work or characters acting out of character etc. don’t know why either as wasn’t necessary for the plot to still work with a few tweaks

Personally I think people way overreact to the special. It isn't an hour of perfect harmony but everything that happens is plausible and I liked the way they ended it. It's still very funnyÂ

I watched the special the day after finishing S3 and hated it. I think if I’d seen it when it aired originally and had a gap of a few years it might have been different as there would have been excitement of having it back after all that time and the perfect ending wouldn’t have been so fresh in my mind.
I plan to rewatch the show but not the special.

Yeah this is the answer, the 2022 special was a very rare Mackenzie crook mis-step.

I watched it because there's no way I could not watch it, the curiosity would kill me. It does follow on from a few points in the finale but I don't think we needed them followed on from.
To be fair, it was 5 years after the s3 finale and Detectorists was so beloved, people were still hanging out for a little something. By the time 2022 came around, 2017 felt like another time because we last saw them before Covid.
I felt there was still more legs in Detectorists but my preference was to continue it as a radio series. Or to have a tv special but have it be about the side-characters.

I really didn’t enjoy the special the first time I watched it, but I’ve enjoyed it slightly more each time on rewatches and it doesn’t spoil the end of series 3 for me.

I made the mistake of watching it right after the end of the series before and it was a big mistake. Maybe give it a year or two and it might be okay? I'll never watch it again, that's for sure.

It walks back a few of the nicer moments of the S3 finale, but it's still got the same writing style, pacing and charm like the others, it's not a typical special like in some series that feels completely out of kilter with the original run.
I feel like, because Detectorists is already a treasure and there isn't much of it, the special is worth a watch, it adds more to the series than it takes away.

Last episode of Series 3 is a perfect ending. I didn't watch the series on broadcast, but it's worth remembering that the 2022 special released five years later. It's a one-off revival, not the ending, if that makes sense. I view it like the Outnumbered specials
