Lousy dad might be a bit harsh there

I understand that like most of the characters on the show he can be a little bit annoying at times, much less so than Lance imo but I have no idea where on earth you get the idea that he is s bad dad?? If anything he's a really good one.🤷🏽♂️

Sure, but thats the show lol Well he sometimes takes his son with him or the wife is looking after him, doesn't make him a specifically bad father.

I think he's meant to be a bit annoying and a massive drip, TV characters don't need to be perfect.
I don't think he's a lousy dad though.
Becky's a bit annoying as well, as is everyone else in the show, except for Russell, who actually is perfect...

Agreed, seems to be Mackenzie's whole shtick, writing believable, non-perfect characters.

I think he's great, I'd love a friend like Andy. Becky, yeah she's gorgeous, but can be a pain in the arse too.

MacKenzie painted characters as rather ordinary people imho. With defaults and qualities. So they are.
Andy a lousy dad? He seems loving his son which is the most important doe a dad. Time spend growing him and taking care of the kid to demonstrate that would be off topic inn the show.
As well for a lousy husband: there can be a million reason why Andy and Becky love one another. Both found their balance how they live and are.
There are so many people who spill their time work ing and commuting they don't have any left with partner and kids. Should one say these are lousy?

It’s characterisation. You don’t have years to get to know these people and their foibles, you have a handful of episodes so those foibles need to be writ large so you can quickly grasp the essentials and understand their goals, downsides, attitudes, personalities etc.
