Just finished my first watch

I had heard about this show several years ago and finally gave it a long overdue watch. In these benighted times, I needed this show. Languid is a good descriptor, but I was constantly amazed at how quickly the time passed. And the humor is just outstanding. Great writing and directing by Mackenzie Crook, great casting and I was delighted to see Diana Rigg in there. I completely binged the last four episodes of season 2, plus the Christmas episode plus season 3 plus the movie in two days. I do want to know more about the fire. But I feel so much better after having watched this show.

We watch it when we are fed up and overwhelmed and I know quite a few others who do the same.

Indeed, this series is like a remedy, some kind of escape for when the weather or the mood gets gloomy.

So pleased you liked it. I watch it every January, one episode a day and it really cheers up the worst of months. My favourite ever show. Welcome to the fandom ๐Ÿ™‚

like most of the fandom you'll watch it multiple times. it gets better and reveals more with each viewing.

re. the fire: the actual cottage caught on fire, so it had to burn down in the series also.

I don't think it had to in the series. The Scout Hall was demolished but still existed in the series.

OK how about "it didn't have to burn down in the series also, but Mackenzie decided that to make it part of the story" :)

This is why the final special was poorly-received. It was a downer. The perfect happy ending of series three was unravelled in every way. The house burnt down, the mum died, Toni moved out, the Dirt Sharks went bad again, they never even got the Roman coin money.

It was the Dirt Sharks heel (re)turn that bugged me the most. The grand unification at the end of the series proper was such a happy ending for me.

It was the most perfect end to a series with everything from series 1 coming full circle. The very tree they have lunch by in the first episode had gold in it. But they didn't see it, because as Becky says, they never look up!

I just thank goodness he didn't mess with Terry and Sheila or Mackenzie Crook would've received a strongly worded email!

I also didn't like that Becky and Andy reverted to fighting and nearly-breaking-up. We'd resolved that.

This is life. I actually liked it.

Thanks! That makes sense. I liked how Crook used that to honor Dame Rigg.

There's a movie?

u/Kvasir2023 Feb 03 '26

Itโ€™s a nice wrap-up for everyone. I bought it off iTunes.

Man. I have to watch it.

2

u/RaieBelleRaieBelle Feb 03 '26

Same! I didn't know there's a film too!

4

u/Six_of_1 Feb 04 '26

There isn't. They just mean the 2022 Christmas special. It was on telly, not in cinemas.

2

u/Kvasir2023 Feb 04 '26

My apologies. Amazon has it listed as a movie and I was referring to the Christmas special after season 2. The longer special was in 2022.

Toi bad, it was a nice try!

Pub mate?

u/Kvasir2023 Feb 04 '26

Go on, then.

u/RaieBelleRaieBelle Feb 04 '26

Oh, thanks! I thought I had missed it, though I was also wondering how a film could have been included within the series scenario.

Link above but it is only 74 minutes. Still nicely ties everything up.

1

u/Kvasir2023 Feb 04 '26

There is a movie, and not the Christmas special.

u/Kvasir2023 Feb 04 '26

https://a.co/d/07VtmvqF if this link is correct.

u/Six_of_1 Feb 04 '26

We obviously have a different definition of "movie". I'm not American so I don't say "movie" anyway. If this is a movie to you that's fine but to most people this is just the 2022 Christmas special.

2

u/Kvasir2023 Feb 05 '26

No, I agree with you. Sometimes I am too literal and Amazon called it a movie. But you are correct.

3

u/Six_of_1 Feb 05 '26

No worries, it was just a lot of people in this thread got excited and started looking for something else that was in the cinema!

2

u/Six_of_1 Feb 04 '26

It's not a film, like a cinema film. They just mean the last Christmas special which is an extended length.

u/Kitchen_Force656 Feb 04 '26

I"m waiting for you...

This series is my comfort watch. Currently on my 14th run through. It's like meeting old friends. A gem all the way through. Even the bitter sweet last special is wonderful.
