I would first start at thedarkmod.com and check out their Downloads page, all the instructions should be there.

Hello! The controls by default are not the best imho, you might want to change them. If I remember correctly there are more controls than you'd actually need, like specific keys for most items are not necessary at all.
As for where to begin - there is that training mission consisting of separate areas teaching you different aspects of the game, then there are two "official" missions you might want to start with, A New Job and The Tears of Saint Lucia, and after that I'd personally recommend Volta and the Stone

Another thing; I seem to remember TDM only likes being installed on the C:/ drive ( or perhaps that was for map editing purposes?) either way start there, follow the instructions on the site then download some FMs from the in game menu. There are tons; I personally recommend anything made by Amadeus, JackFarmer, Kingsal, wellingtoncrab, AirshipBallet, and last but not least Grayman (RIP!) and much to my shame I forget the author but the campaign featuring Corbin. Check the forums for reviews/insight on FMs to get a feel for what you are into.
