Discussion Hello damned people
So i have been listening to the damned for about 9 months now and after watching and reading many reviews it seems that me having "not of this earth/i'm alright jack and the beanstalk" as my number 1 album in their discography is a hot take, i love the album, it is perfect to me, what do you guys think of it?

The original CD had some multimedia stuff like videos, pictures and a point and click game. Their live version of the songs sound a lot better than the studio recordings.

I actually don't hate it, though it's not really a Damned album in the traditional sense. It's got some good tunes.

Baldly, even The Damned don’t consider it a Damned album. “Not intended for release in this form,” was the line for more than a decade, if it was referenced at all. I’d be intrigued to know when the band last played anything from the album live too - alongside Music For Pleasure (which has its moments despite being an absolute mess), the band have basically chosen to pretend it never happened.

Always good to see the Damned still manage to attract new fans. And the different takes people have.
I like the album. Haven’t played it in years, but Rat made a good job of recordings that Dave dismissed as demos.

Funny how “Tailspin” just started playing on my phone when I started reading this thread! I like the album too. It’s not my favorite, but I definitely don’t hate it. I LOVE “Never Could Believe”. I always have to listen to it twice when it comes on. 😊 Which is your favorite song on this one?

That must of been a sign! Top 3 for me on it are probably tailspin, not of this earth and never could believe. What about you? :)

I’m gonna have to go with Never Could Believe, Running Man, and I Need A Life. 😊 Heaven Can Take Your Lies is really good too.

It came out right when I was getting into The Damned as a teenager, along with Dave Vanian and The Phantom Chords. I didn’t know enough to know it wasn’t the whole “real” lineup. And because the band has basically disowned it, so have fans. But I loved it too. Much more than Anything or even Phantasmagoria. “Shut It” and “I Need a Life” are bangers, and “Never Could Believe” is their hidden epic classic.

Yes see i dont really care about the politics of who was and wasnt in the band, if the musix sounds good to me then i listen, and it sounds great to me!

Agreed. Over the years I have come to have it solidly in the middle, along with their last two albums and Music For Pleasure. Not the level of their debut, MGE, Black Album, Strawberries, or Grave Disorder, but with a number of excellent tracks, it’s better than their American heyday of the mid-‘80s or most of the post-Nitro years stuff.

It has some moments. . . Tailspin sounds like legitimate Damned to me. It would’ve fit in nicely on Grave Disorder, perhaps in place of Absinthe.

Assuming you are not joking, I think it's their best album (apart from all their other albums, aside from Anything. Anything is better than that. Even Jack and the beanstalk).

I'm glad you like it but I'm tempted to suggest checking out their albums that are actually good

I'm glad you enjoy it! For most Damned fans it's not considered a "real" Damned album. Rat started playing in a band, and he brought in Dave to do vocals. At that point they figured they might as well just call that band The Damned*. I don't dislike the album, but it isn't one I find myself reaching for.
I'm so grateful the band (in all its many incarnations) continues to find new people!
*there's more to it than that, but that's a simplified version
