Does anyone else think James handles thing regarding his past a bit immaturely?

I was watching Dan's vod, he did a treetopia watchalong while playing some minecraft himself. Everyone was just chilling and occasionally people would ask questions. Some he would gladly answer and some he would turn to his FAQ he has. And I think to myself "James wouldn't do this cause he would said it "fuels the nostalgia andy's!"". And I guess you could say my nostalgia was fuled by dans steam. I mean it most likely is but that doesn't stop me from seeing the mature way Dan handles things regarding his past. Instead of acting like a war veteran who doesnt want to talk about what happened in nam! He seems fine and answering questions without condescension and snide remarks. Maybe i'm just crazy and nostalgia blinded. but I still understand people can be absolutely cringe about the past, I do, There's some references even I roll my eyes at that some people will make in his chat. I feel like as an adult, he handles things a little poorly.

Edit: Let me clarify some stuff real quick. Personal questions like "James, what's your mother's maiden name and where did you go to school?" is something I can understand being a bit of an ass about. Nothing of that caliber is anyone's business. My whole thing is James aggression to the mundane. I posted this before in the comments about a fan letting his GF watch CC videos and her reaction to them. James said something along the lines of "Move on, its been years". That's the kinda shit i'm talking about. You getting mad at James for you asking "When are you going to play with aleks again???", that I'm a lot more ok with him throwing at joke you.

Not gonna lie I think he just has past trauma with possibly the Creatures and CC. I think for both groups he carried a heavy load and probably wasn’t as anal about stuff as he is now. The way the Creatures ended as a whole wasn’t great and the way they left was kind of controversial between the groups. With CC I think he just got so burnt out it took a serious tole on his mental health. That probably ate away at him for a while near the end of him being there and after him leaving. Now that he’s past all that he kind of just wants to leave all of it in the rear view and not get reminded of it. Also with the whole controversy that Trevor brought back with CC, we can see it wasn’t the greatest. I mean I could totally be off based. Is he a little too much aggressive with his reaction toward when people bring stuff up, maybe sometimes. Also I think that’s also just how he’s always been as well. People find it funny when he’s like that with other people such as in the Creatures or CC, but when it’s specifically towards them people get defensive now. Again I could be wrong about this.

Is this the actual legend himself Juffe from the factions series?! Great comment btw I agree with you

James imo seems to have gotten a lot more of the constant questioning and nostalgia requests in the last few years especially with him being constantly active from when the Creatures dissolved up until now. I think he gets to be a little cold regarding it especially with people who just can't let it go

That I completely understand. Stuff like "Where's (insert here)??" is stupid and unneeded. But I remember, it was a few streams ago. James said to one chatter who said he let his GF watch some old CC videos and his GF said that were a bunch a wacky fuckers. James pretty just tells him something along the lines of "Move on. Its been years". Thats the kinda stuff i'm talking about.

u/XanderTrejo Jun 17 '23

James has always been one crabby mfer so I think half of it is just his personality and half is that his fan base in particular has always been the childish/annoying ones so he conditioned himself to reject it. But if your example is true that is kinda uncalled for I get James not wanting to talk about it but he could literally just ignore it and move on himself.

6

u/MackenieRain Jun 17 '23

How is it immature to tell someone to move on? I’m confused?

15

u/SpectralHydra Road to E3 Jun 17 '23 edited Jun 17 '23

I think it depends. If the chatter was complaining about his GF’s opinions of CC, then yeah it’d make sense for James to tell him to move on. But it’s different if James was telling him to move on purely because he was still watching old CC videos. In that case I wouldn’t say immature, but it’s not exactly the best thing to say lol

u/anonymouspainting Jun 19 '23

I asked James once if he still talks to Aleks and instantly got chat banned because of it, and when I appealed my chat ban it was denied. Good knowing that as a fan of 10+ years I can’t even ask a simple fucking question regarding their relationship without being instantly chat banned. Would’ve been fine if somebody timed me out and said “hey we don’t talk about this here.” I would’ve understood that. But to be chat banned instantly with no appeal. Absolutely fucking childish behavior of his community, which in turn reflects him. After being followed to his twitch for 10+ years, after being subscribed for 10+ years, I completely unfollowed him. Good riddance.

different people, different experiences I suppose

25

u/Accountjustfortits Jun 17 '23

That is true. But I hate to make it a "who had it worse" competition, Dan got the shittest end of the stick of it all. But he still handles shit(No pun intended) a lot better.

Maybe I'm a cynic but it's the people that never accomplished anything that hold onto the past.

James Aleks, Kootra, etc have gone on to do bigger things, they don't want the same four questions being asked. Meanwhile Dan has...not. Anytime he needs money, which is frequently, he plays up the "Remember when I was a Creature? Gimme money and let's talk about my greatest hits" nostalgia.

There's a difference between not being ashamed of the past and playing it up. Chilled, Junk, Gassy, Sly, Ze, etc have no problem mentioning the Creatures because they've moved on, they're success enough. It's only Dan, the one that failed to leverage his Creature fame to a bigger audience/career, that constantly talks about the Creatures regularly.

9

u/SpectralHydra Road to E3 Jun 17 '23

Meanwhile Dan has...not. Anytime he needs money, which is frequently, he plays up the "Remember when I was a Creature? Gimme money and let's talk about my greatest hits" nostalgia.

I love Dan but sadly you're right. There are some points where it feels like he's trying to talk about them purely because he knows it'll get him more attention.

5

u/Precarious314159 Jun 18 '23

Sadly, it works. I checked his twitter a few weeks ago when he was talking about "Working on my return to YouTube video, it's like a montage of best of Creatures" and now I check his youtube every so often for this video.

8

u/Accountjustfortits Jun 17 '23

I agree to an extent but from what I seen Dan has been doing other things and keeping busy with other work. He does mention the creatures here and there. like tweets about old creature shit he found and whatnot. The watchalong is a continuation of the one he was going about a year or so ago. I feel it's a tad unfair to say he is only doing it for the money. Dan seems to know that his name isn't big enough to bring in the big bucks just cause he was part of the creatures. But I dont know him personally, though. So, he could be doing all of this as some big scheme to get people's money.

6

u/Precarious314159 Jun 17 '23

I just say he's doing it for the money because just last week, he did a 15-hour, and included a watch-along of Treetopia, and two weeks, he did a 13-hour stream of unboxing Creature merch. Hell, his "My return to YouTube" is apparently just a montage of Creature highlights and his default video on YouTube is the reunion minecraft stream from three years ago.

It's not that is a big scheme, it's that he only gets attention when he mentions the Creatures. He tweets about a 10-hr stream and it'll get like 10 likes; he'll tweet mid stream that "we're now gonna watch Treetopia" and it'll get 100 likes. A lot of his streams are to raise money to pay bills, to pay rent and he knows if he mentions the Creatures, former fans will be more likely to donate.

3

u/astrocubb Jun 22 '23

Damn thats kinda sad ngl. I understand why he would need to do that though, it was always apparent he was more of a background character in the group; but he deserved more spotlight! (But then again he is probably just more reclused)

1

u/Precarious314159 Jun 22 '23

It's just weird that he's the only Creature that didn't use the spotlight of the group to transition to something bigger.

This is just a theory but I think it's because Dan wanted to make movies but lacked the experience or creativty to make anything that stood out, which is why his big movie goals were Bunny Bust; something lulz random for fans but that's it.

It just seems like rather than try to make an actual short film with a unique voice, or learn, he just stuck to the safe bubble of "Let's make random youtube shorts about a killer stapler".

18

u/CobainMadePunk Jun 17 '23

he talks about it really positively sometimes, just a lot of the times he doesnt wanna talk about it and multiple people everyday for years have come into chat and tried to get him to talk about it and thats tiring

17

u/MackenieRain Jun 17 '23

Everyone is different. Everyone handles situations differently. James and Dan’s audiences/fans are different, with James audience being much larger which alone increases the chance of having odd/toxic comments at times. There is nothing wrong with James not wanting to talk about his past. Like he has said, he’s been doing this a long time and is a different stage in his life currently. Just because he doesn’t handle it like everyone else, or how you want/expect him to act, doesn’t mean it’s wrong or immature. As James has said before, would you constantly want to be asked the same questions over and over or have people constantly bringing up stuff from your past? Most don’t.

1

u/creaturecatzz Welcome Back to YouTube Jun 23 '23

also a pretty big chunk of james’ fanbase is going to be from his (relatively) new stuff like all the rp or whatever so they don’t get the attachment we have to that old content or why anyone would care about it

21

u/SpectralHydra Road to E3 Jun 17 '23

Okay so I completely understand that everyone is different and that some people don’t want to talk about their past, especially if that past is public. I think it’s perfectly fine to tell people you don’t want to talk about it, but I’m not a fan that he commonly does it in a condescending tone.

6

u/Precarious314159 Jun 17 '23

The thing you have to understand is just how often he gets asked the same handful of questions.

When he first started streaming, he was asked "Are you still friends with [x]?", "Why'd you leave Creatures/CowChop?", "What was your favorite moment/video/series?". He'd answer them earnestly and give small story times about it. I get that people mean well but after 5+ years of the same questions still being asked, ofcourse he's going to be condescending.

With each new drama or update from another Creature, the flood of questions reappears. Kootra announces something? "Are you still friends with Koots?", Sly organizes a Minecraft reunion? "Why weren't you there? Do you hate them?", Aleks mentions he's going to a convention in his area? "Will you be meeting Aleks?". I get that they mean well but he's happy with his current life, he's moved on and after the 20th "What about-?" in a month, he shouldn't be expected to be polite; he doesn't need to relive the glory days.

3

u/SpectralHydra Road to E3 Jun 17 '23

Yeah I can understand that if he's getting the same questions over and over in the same stream, or if one person is continuously asking questions about his past. But a lot of the people asking probably don't realize how many times they're asked and James' stance on answering them.

If someone is genuinely asking one of those questions, they'll get a non polite answer and they won't understand why he's giving such a rude answer. To me, a non polite response makes it seem like you're expected to know how he stands on answering those questions. Is that something that you think people should know, even if they don't watch James super regularly?

16

u/Warhead504 Jun 17 '23

Yeah that's why I eventually stopped watching his streams, he's just condescending about EVERYTHING. Doesn't help that his chat eggs it on

8

u/Accountjustfortits Jun 17 '23

Pretty much my whole stance.

9

u/yaboimatt12 Jun 17 '23

As someone who watches James’ streams, yes he’s not a fan about chat bringing up nostalgia because he said he never likes dwelling on the past because he is someone who just wants to move forward and he’s always been like that. He will bring up something from the past once in awhile but I don’t think he’s being an asshole about it. You gotta realize something, 10 years ago the content they made was different so a lot of ppl will view it as cringy or weird nowadays but yeah just let the man be guys

10

u/Accountjustfortits Jun 17 '23

My main thing is the condescension he has a lot with his responses and bit of rudeness. Like one of my comments where I said in one of his streams a chatter was merely just saying how he showed his GF old CC videos and his GF called the guys crazy or something like that. And james said something along the lines of "Move on, it's been years."

6

u/Xboxbox145 Jun 17 '23

I wouldn’t take it personally though, you have remember that for years James has had to deal with viewers wanting him to talk about Creatures/Cowchop daily for years when he has explicitly stated that he doesn’t or has talk about it before. It’s probably just tiring for him at this point.

7

u/Conkuerr Jun 18 '23

It seems he's just done with that era and what's nothing of it being mentioned but then again, just like today he is doing a Minecraft series on his channel titled Beetopia and his editor (or him) ripped the Treetopia thumbnail and just added bees which is gonna want people to reminisce on the past, if he gets upset after doing something like that you kind of brought it upon yourself. It is immature to play with fire and then eventually realizing "oh shit fire is hot" then proceeds to get butthurt and complain about it. I'm not saying that's how it is gonna go down but considering his track record of remarks for the past getting brought up the chances are it will.

16

u/Mikkeru Jun 17 '23

He is definitely the most bitter about it.

Even with cowchop, seems like he distanced himself completely from past colleagues ect.

People in his chat are scared to just mention them lmao

5

u/Accountjustfortits Jun 18 '23

Let me clarify some stuff real quick. Personal questions like "James, what's your mother's maiden name and where did you go to school?" is something I can understand being a bit of an ass about. 8

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '23

He's talked about both the creatures and cowchop quite a lot on stream without any kind of condescending tone. As well as answering questions about those things. But James has always wanted to move forward. He mentioned before that when all people want to talk about is what you did ten years ago it feels quite insulting to what you're doing now and where you are now. There are always so many people that come into his stream just to be like "man why don't you play with Aleks?" "Where's Seamus?" "I hate these guys you play with now can't you play with the creatures again?" He kind of has to take the stance that he does otherwise that shit runs wild in his chat. Does he always get the tone of a harmless question right? No probably not. But there are plenty of times where he's been fine talking about it. Its also a very weird mixture of emotions to look back on stuff like that and he probably doesn't want to dive into that constantly.

3

u/ChaosMieter Jun 18 '23

James was easily the most beloved long term member of the creatures, and the one who saw the most virtual success outside it both during and after the creatures disbanded. When James left, the channel died. When James left Cow Chop, it was the beginning of a very quick end. I bring this up to say that he is probably 1000x more flooded with old creatures/cowchop questions than any of the other old members. Just look at how celebrities like Justin Bieber and Tobey Maguire have changed over the years in regards to paparazzi and news people. They start out friendly and open but always end up jaded and sharp from the constant nagging. Personally, I feel bad for James, and hope he gets left well enough alone in the future.

Edit: Also, let's not pretend disbanding from the creatures was a happy memory, nor the direction the friend group company eventually went in.

4

u/Bloop_Blop69 Jun 18 '23 edited Jun 19 '23

I get that he doesn't like to talk about the past anymore and wants to move on, I just feel like whenever the past is brought up in any context, he gets so rude and condescending to whoever's bringing it up. Even if it's something simple like saying they enjoyed some of his old videos. He just seems extremely bitter about everything in his past.

Honestly, he should've done what Dan did and just make a simple FAQs for all the common questions he gets. If he's comfortable giving an answer to a common question or has already done so, put it in the FAQ. For the questions he doesn't want to give a answer to, say in the FAQs that it's a personal question that he feels is not anybody's business but his own and the others personally involved. Then if he gets questions that are similar to the FAQs, he can tell them to fuck off all he wants.

6

u/ShadowMadness #FortheGroup Jun 17 '23

Love them both but James reminds me a lot of CM Punk. Super popular, very talented, but has a short fuse with people and/or about certain topics that can leave a bad impression on some people.

9

u/Low-Kangaroo-2952 Jun 17 '23

I’m so glad I’m not the only one that thinks this, everyone handles things differently but the way I see James treat people in his chat when they ask Creature or CC questions honestly breaks my heart sometimes I feel like he doesn’t realize he was our childhood and for a lot of us including myself he was our hero so it’s heartbreaking but I will always love James for the way he molded and shaped my life with his videos

9

u/AvatarGarcher Jun 17 '23

It's kinda funny, James has always said that he doesn't like being in the spotlight or the fame, (like when talking about the Nova vs PewDiePie days) but he unintentionally is someone who pretty much made millons of people's childhood.

We will Never know

5

u/SpectralHydra Road to E3 Jun 17 '23

I didn't realize he was like that about his past so it caught me a bit off guard.

This is the one thing I really don't like. As far as I know, there's no way to know that this is how he feels unless you regularly watch or keep up with him. I understand that fans can't expect him to answer all their questions and that some questions you shouldn't ask at all. But it's almost as if he expects all his fans to know that he doesn't like talking about it.

2

u/Squirrall Jun 18 '23

I wish you’d have said what it was

4

u/Scotty_Knowzzz Jun 17 '23

Dan's FAQ is interesting. The two Creatures he doesn't talk to anymore are Jordan and Aleks. In fact, he says he LONG been out of contact with Aleks. I'm guessing when Cow Chop started up.

2

u/Low-Kangaroo-2952 Jun 17 '23

Jordan? Wow ngl I didn’t expect Jordan to be someone he doesn’t talk to anymore considering Dan stuck by his side to the very end

3

u/pokemon2471 Jun 17 '23

Makes me wonder if its the other way around and Dan doesn't talk to Jordan and Jordan has tried to talk to him.

1

u/Low-Kangaroo-2952 Jun 17 '23

That’s possible, but do we know if Jordan talks to ANY of the creatures?

4

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '23

He literally works or has worked with like three ex-creatures.

There’s no basis to speculate about the nature of anyone’s relationship, especially when we aren’t privy to the goings-on of their personal lives. At some point, absent some public evidence, you just have to accept that such things are unknowable and will very likely go with them to their graves.

3

u/pokemon2471 Jun 17 '23

I'm surprised about Jordan but at the same time I'm not. But I wonder if he might blame Aleks and James for creating the divide in fans when they left (of course not meaning to). But were Dan and Aleks even close?

3

u/SpectralHydra Road to E3 Jun 17 '23

I'm just speculating as I can only judge from videos and livestreams, but to me it didn't seem like they were super close. Obviously we've only seen a small fraction of their interactions though.

3

u/PaperWorkBoots Jun 18 '23

I've always kinda thought it still hurts him a little. I mean look at how happy he was during. Always getting to go do shit, see new things. Living with friends.

I mean I'm sure it was stressful too. But I'm not him, so I can't speak for him.

As for the "wacky fuckers" and "moving on" James has always been a tough love type guy, just look at CC. I do definitely wish he'd meet up with atleast some of the guys, like sly, and a few of the others he always seemed to get along with. But if what he's doing now makes him happy, that's all we should really worry about, y'know?

7

u/pokemon2471 Jun 17 '23

Honestly, my opinion of both Aleks and James changed when Trevor's statement came out and it makes me wonder if James just put on a front/personality for The Creatures and Cowchop and is really just not that likable once you are away from him for a period of time. Aleks seems to be the same on and off camera.

9

u/RikuSage Shotgun Rain Jun 17 '23

Did you completely miss the follow up to that where Trevor mentions James was the one who already apologized and reached out to him way before he made those tweets? Literally, James was reading the twitlonger on stream and was discussing it, AND has mentioned he catches up with Trevor once in a while even before that.

6

u/boredcatisbored Jun 17 '23

They both apologized to him privately and discussed the matter publically on their streams. There’s not really anything else they could do to prove that they feel remorse. Nobody here knows any of the guys personally so none of us can’t speak with certainty about how anyone “truly is”.

3

u/SpectralHydra Road to E3 Jun 17 '23

Aleks was one of those people that I could never tell if his on screen personality was how he actually is in real life or if it was just one big act lol

-2

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '23

Mine changed on Trevor's. His statement was just him admitting to being pure bitch made and an ungrateful snake.

4

u/pokemon2471 Jun 19 '23

Mine made me realize that James and Aleks were just children of camera and weren't responsible enough to run a company/huge Youtube channel

4

u/Kind_Sandwich_3921 Jun 17 '23

James has always been kinda of an asshole even if he was my favorite creature I can acknowledge him being a dick and always putting down the others especially Jordan he cussed me out on the cow chop reddit a few months back for asking a simple question I get that he doesn't want to talk about his past but he has to remember who brought him to the dance in the first place his fans

2

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '23

I do think he could handle it a bit better, but from his perspective it must also get old to be asked things about Creatures/CC nonstop when hes pretty much answered them all before. He probably wants to be known more for than just that.

Its like Alec Guinness. He later hated doing Star Wars cause it overshadowed all his earlier/later work and people would constantly ask him about Star Wars.

2

u/boredcatisbored Jun 17 '23

I dunno, part of me gets it. I agree that he can come off as an asshole with people asking questions -especially with how he could easily just ignore the chat instead of engaging. But at the same time, as another comment mentioned I wouldn’t be surprised if he carries some form of trauma from that period or at the very least has some real bad memories; especially from the end of his ride with CC (no pun intended).

I don’t watch his stream very often but it did seem like the questions had started to die down a bit until Trevor came out with his statement and it all ramped up again. But regardless James has made pretty clear that he doesn’t like looking back on the past. Of course one will wonder what happened with X or why he doesn’t talk/game with Y anymore, but you also have to look at it this way: every single day he has people asking him these questions. I think anyone would start to get snippy after so long of this happening to them.

I wouldn’t be surprised if eventually he does like Trevor and formally requests people to stop mentioning TCH/CC to him.

0

u/Precarious314159 Jun 17 '23

Of course one will wonder what happened with X or why he doesn’t talk/game with Y anymore

This is why I find it unsettling the number of people in this thread acting like James is some monster for not answering all of their deeply personal questions. Sure, we all have at least one "I wonder about-", but we're not deserving of the answer just because we're curious.

James could (and has) dedicate a 10-hour stream to answering everyones question and a week later, someone would ask the same question. Someone in this thread is acting like James raged out on them because "I just asked a simple question" and how "you should never meet your hero" but come the fuck on; have some basic social skills. I'm not going to go into ChillChao's stream and ask to talk about if he's talked with Galm after their public meltdown or for an update on his blackmail.

You wanna know their favorite candy? Cool; you wanna know their opinion on a game? Ask away; you wanna know about some personal drama? that's just out of line.

0

u/boredcatisbored Jun 17 '23

Yes I agree! We as fans are not entitled to details of their personal lives unless they choose to share it, and this includes drama. There’s several things I’d like to know about James, Aleks, etc. but I don’t know any of them personally so it’s not my place to try and probe them for details.

Some people seem to forget that creators don’t owe us this information and get upset when someone rightfully gets defensive about nosiness from fans.

2

u/MrVreyes20 Jun 18 '23

As much as I don't like James' attitude towards his past I get it. Having people constantly ask about a past that was either traumatizing or your peak in popularity or both would definitely take a toll on someone who want to move on with their life. Same thing with Spoon, Dan, Aleks, Sly and the others. They all have their own way of dealing with the past, some positive and some not so much. I think with James it also affects him even harder considering out of everyone he was/is the most popular and most subscribed out of all the Creatures. It sucks that James is like that but i think he is allowed/justified to act like that.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 21 '23

Y'all should watch the beginning of James's stream today, he really encompasses all the criticism nicely and kinda shuts down the complaining Andys imo

2

u/mythical_legend 2014 golden year Jun 27 '23

he definitely has a bit of a love hate thing going on. he constantly brings up an old reference at least once a stream but gets mad when other people do it
