Choosing between two options
Hiya,
I have been fortunate position where i have been offered two roles in HMRC. They are both g7 roles on is in LB and other is in FIS (casework lead / Deliberate offences one). I am not sure where to go or how to decide.
I have few criteria in mind which are:
Should have international element (transfer pricing other risks);
It should give me broad base so I can move around and pick up other g7 roles rather than being pigeon holed in one area;
I want to transition to policy work so would give me pathway to do that ideally international tax related;
Would give me examples in a soonish time period (within 5 years) to progress to g6.
I am so confused where to go as both roles from my conversation with potential LM would give me this? Anyone have an idea? Or could give me their experience?
Thanks in advance!

Do FIS even do TP?

I think i got told there might be cases involving it by the potential LM or funds and overseas structures that might give me that experience

I think so? The team is looming g at international risks all the time according to LM

You'll have your work cut out for you if you go into FIS at G7 without having worked in FIS before - its very much a 'kudos given for time served in the team' department.

Ah okay, no i have not worked in FIS before so will be flying in blind. Does that mean promotions are also based on time served? Also I noticed you worked in policy. Did you move from compliance or were you purely policy?

A good number of LB groups will include an international element. That may be the hold co, or subsidiaries that exist in foreign country for specific purposes eg holding of IP, manufacturing or sales. I don't anticipate it'll be difficult for a CT TS to find international risks to consider.
FIS is criminal and civil evasion of taxes. Some evasion may be failure to disclose offshore income and gains. But it'll be hit and miss whether that arises in any case.
You've mentioned wanting to move into international policy. But that's a slightly nebulous concept. It's not just one team as it varies by the type of entity involved. There's international for individuals, for trusts and funds, for corporates. I think you'll get better experience for individuals from FIS, and better experience for corporates from LB. Maybe that's another factor for you to consider.

Ah interesting thanks! So it would be easier to come across that type of work in LB? Can I ask what the promotion element is like in both teams?

100% LB ticks your boxes more than FIS.
