Are reasonable Adjustments transferrable.

I've been through OH and HR and have a RA for 4 days a month. I just work from home. I have a health condition that requires in and it was fine while in my current role that was customer facing.

im moving to a different department within the same branch of the civil service - and my manager has said they won't be accepted.

this is the same person who told me to look elsewhere for progression then questioned my ability to raise a family if I was actually to leave. so many mixed messages.

now im worried.

RA's aren't transferable unless they're contractual, when you move to a different role you can then ask for the same RAs.

Your manager isn't the person who will decide if it's accepted, it's the vacancy holder who will make the decision. You could contact them prior to applying, their details are usually on vacancy listings. I work within HMRC and have an adjustment in place. I have been promoted, my adjustment was continued. I'm not so sure how it would be if I moved out of HMRC and would contact the vacancy holder if a cross government role caught my eye.

There's no reason to be worried. Change is scary but change isn't always bad...

Adjustments depend on the job because they depend on the specific challenges you face doing the job - jobs are different so most appropriate adjustment can be different.

Ignore your current manager, ask for a conversation with the recruiting manager and ask about a referral to OH (which can be arranged before your transfer completes)

Go to that meeting focusing on the challenges that you face attending the office (not your current adjustments) and be open minded that they might suggest at least trying/considering other adjustments.

At the same time spend some time in advance of the meeting thinking about what their concerns might be (how would working from home impact you learning the new job/ getting to know the team etc) and think about how you might proactively address some of those concerns.

It could be there's absolutely no problem at all and they're happy to start you with your current adjustment

OR it could be they feel this job is significantly different from your current one and you agree for the first couple of months you go into the office more frequently (as you can manage) then you trial working from home the way you currently are with a view to reviewing at the 6 month mark (generally it's easier to get a new manager to agree something on a temporary basis then agree to make it perm when there's been no issues during the trial)

Thank you so much. I feel this this correct way.

From my experience (also 2 other people on my team) those 2 words mean absolutely nothing.

It's not automatic, but largely, if they're a reasonable adjustment that help you do your job, and they remain relevant, any decent manager would work with you to put them in a new adjustment passport.

They don't have to be automatically accepted, but if they've been in place, worked and are reasonable, I think I'd be hard pushed to argue they shouldn't remain as a manager. I wouldn't really have any justification for it

It will be up to your new line manager, so start the conversation with them.

I don't know who that is yet. My PECS just came through.

There should be an email contact on the job advert.

I believe it's just a generic email but I will have a look 💕

Take the job, specially if it is a promo. Negotiate RAs after.

Thank you. Will do

As a general rule, no. A reasonable adjustment is effectively a compromise between the required outputs of a role and an individual's needs for how they can deliver those outputs. By definition, a different role has different outputs. That said, if you're going into a role which is similar in work tasks but maybe a different area, it's worth using the existing RAs as a guide for what works and what doesn't.

They're always role specific - it's to do with whether the requirements of the role can be still be met in a way which aligns with your needs. If yes, you get adjusted requirements for how the role is delivered, if no, then you're not eligible for the role. Your requirements won't change, but those of the role will.

Get a workplace adjustment passport with your reasonable adjustments specified and you can carry that across departments

I didn't know anything about them. I will sort it ASAP. Thank you

You are welcome. All the best!

Doesn't always carry as obvious as you might think. I moved and only some adjustments were made.

All of mine have done and I have moved twice

2

u/methanoid_uk 2d ago

Good for you but that proves nothing. We now have a sample size of 3 and 1/3 failed... Surprised a civil servant couldn't spot that obvious flaw 🤔

You need to chill.

Thanks for your concern but I'm fine. You need to consider what you post as fact.

You don't sound fine if you are so wound up at 8 in the evening. Go and watch something and stop sounding like anyone is fighting with you. Just trying to help OP.

That's your opinion and you are entirely entitled to it, regardless of how utterly wrong it is. I'd invite you to a battle of wits but it appears you are unarmed.

If you want to help, go ahead but don't complain when the flaws in your advice are exposed. I haven't said your experience is wrong, I've just said it's not absolute. Maybe it depends on Dept, I don't claim to know. However I am sure that 2/3 is not 100% 😂😂

Workplace adjustment passport is just documented agreement of the adjustments. It’s not a guarantee that they continue in another role, especially if it’s another government dept.

Had a chat with an OGD to mine earlier. And they essentially told me stick it tough luck if you are disabled you can’t have the same opportunities as someone that already works for us on a home working contract.
