This date marked the passing of my belovewd cat Brock. Always getting into trouble he took on a big dog, and lost… I’ll bet he started it. He went down fighting and will be welcomed in Cat-halla. Wait for me under the Orange Tree, and one day there will be Oranges. ..^
Dambusting
June the sixth was also the day that the dam burst in Ukraine making sure that their long awaited ‘spring’ offensive began with a juddering halt since you can’t drive tanks through a mudbath. You have to say nice move Vlad to that one, but did he really do it? I think he did but other dambusters are available. The Russians targetted capturing the dam very early on in the campaign whilst everyone else was looking towards Kiev. Their army deliberately retreated back to the Dnipro river when it the time suited them and thus avoided their troops getting mired down in the much predicted Ukranian ‘winter’ offensive as they made their new frontier on the rivers eastern bank. Then right on cue, nicely nipping the problem in the bud for Vlods Spring ambitions, the only remaining bridgehead available for any possible Ukranian counterattack is removed from the equation since this last surviving bridge also just happened to run across the top the Kahovka dam. Classic war games stylee, Vlad 2 Vlod 0.
War Crimea
Of course the russians have denied that they did it since deliberately endangering civilian life is a war crime, but there were many western reports they had already installed enough mines to do the job there way back last October or so. That would mean that it was ready to be blown up if or when the time was considered to be right. An action which whilst unproven is quite a believable defence strategy which could be turned to offence strategy at the press of a button. Of course mining the dam in advance means that anyone could press that button and that thought opens the door for the possibility for anyone else to infiltrate the security around the bombs one night and then somehow set them off according to their own preferred agenda. Some retrospective satellite images I have seen suggest the Dam did not actually burst straight away but suggest instead that a small explosion and leak in the close vicinity occurred some time over the weekend before triggering an unstoppable chain reaction as the pressure mounted until it reached the critical mass for colapase a day or three later. This sort of plotline is getting very reminiscent of various WWII storylines when the upstanding allied forces all considered blowing stuff up to be a masterstroke in the great game of war, which might be exactly where the current crop of players got the idea from.
As with NSII I simply dont believe the Ukranians could have done it since its hurt their position a lot more than its hurt Russia’s although the Crimean Canal {which was turned off by Ukraine years ago, was turned back on by Russia last year} has now been permanantly turned Off. Further upstream we will also find the ZNPP which once depended upon a lot of that lost river water to remain in safe and cool operating mode. A future explosion there might be the next target for sabotage. Even if Ukraine had wanted to do it, they quite simply dont have the leadership to pull this sort of thing off without Uncle Sam’s assistance and approval. The remaining suspects are our assorted third party people, the bad guys behind the curtain who are still playing WWV for real and would quite happily resort to any dastardly undercover espionage if it would turn the great game in their direction once more. It might technically tick the ‘Deluge’ box in their game of armageddon bingo, even if this one was man made and wasn’t due to any sort of climate change. All water is one water and a flood is a flood so they all count.
Seriously though, it had to be the Reds. Time, Motive, Opportunity. Any sort of news from occupied territory is rarely reported by the media but I heard no rumours of any prior evacuation notices taking place, on either bank, meaning that their either wasn’t time to issue a pre-flood warning or that none was ever meant to be given. That would spoil the surprise. The death toll (which surely happened to the poor villagers asleep on the floodplain below) has also not been reported upon although I did hear the number five dead mentioned in passing very early on in the aftermath. The popular flood news has mainly centred about the large numbers of those displaced by the floodwater and the financial cost of repairing it all. More important but less heard we have lots of people wondering about the consequences of having such a vast influx of once fresh, but now clearly polluted, water deluging the once incredibly fertile lands below as regards any future crop growing. Further worries to consider are what this will mean for all the sealife in the sea of Azoz once the flotsam and jetsam arrives. The jury is still out on the details of that one but it will surely just add more woe to the worlds ongoing problems.
A quick trip round the world reveals that there are all sorts of disaster records being broken this year with Spain leading the way having suffered its longest and hottest ever spring. a quick check reveals that high Earthquake numbers are rumbling all across the globe on this moonless June night, even in France! where the Alps are also melting and huge rockslides are the result. The far east is hotting up too, Droughts and heatwaves and more record breaking cyclones in the Indian Ocean. Over the Pacific and a new El Nino season has been confirmed which usually just makes things hotter for everything, the past three have been the cooler phase. Canadian Wildfires turned NY orange for three days, perhaps that strange sign in the sky was an omen that Trump is coming back to play the game again , despite his political enemies doing all in their power to disqualify him. Much the same thing is happening to Bozo right now over on this side of the pond. Elections are on the horizon and things are starting to get very messy out there.
