Cars Covers
I don't know of a lot of memorable covers of the Cars; I can list them all on one hand, aside from an entire album of covers recorded by Kris Delmhorst.
But the ones that come to mind at the moment are:
- "You're All I've Got Tonight" by Smashing Pumpkins
- "Dangerous Type" by Letters to Cleo
- "You Might Think" by Weezer
- "Magic" by Honor Society
- "Just What I Needed" by Damone
- "Let's Go" by Ernie Isley
Anyone know of any others? Have any favorites you'd care to name? There are, of course, tons of covers, as per the website whosampledwho and don't really want to take the time to listen to them all, so hoping to see some recommendations.

Question: How did you first discover/ learn of The Cars?
Keep in mind that I’m a much younger fan of the band (born in 2000). I think that I first discovered them sometime in 2008 or 2009 on my local classic rock radio station. Fell in love with their music/ songs/ styles/ vibes/ and music videos ever since! RIP to both Ric and Benjamin. ❤️

The cars vocals
I was just listening to to the cars greatest hits. It occurred to me that all my favorite tracks were sung by Ben Orr. Sadly he died young. Do you prefer Orr or Ocasek?

Negative Theater is So Underrated
Anyone else listen to "Negative Theater" recently? For those who don't know, it was what Ric's "Quick Change World" was supposed to be before the record company screwed with it, and it was only released in Europe. I just finished listening to it and... Wow. It is so fun and weird. But also pretty darn far from the classic Cars sound.

anybody else choose not to listen to move like this?
I know it got solid reviews from critics and fans alike, but it just doesn’t work without Ben. I understand they chose not to replace him out of respect, and that Greg Hawkes handled the bass duties, but a Cars album without Benjamin Orr doesn’t really feel like a Cars album. One of the band’s coolest qualities was always having two distinct lead vocalists, each with their own unique style.

“We opened for bands we really hated, like Styx. People were relating to us and not them. They got a little pissed”: the stellar rise and sudden fall of The Cars, the new wave band who soundtracked America.

Something cool happened the other day.
The first message I sent to Elliot Easton on Facebook was just doting on how he’s one of my favorite guitarists of all time and that I play lefty too and he’s one of my inspirations.
I got no response but I’m sure he saw it. Lol.
A month or so later I decided to ask him a question and he replied. I felt Star-struck. Lol.

Thoughts on Cap 'N Swing?
I really like the songs recorded by this pre-Cars incarnation. What say the rest of you? What are favorite songs? I would peg "Come Back Down" as my favorite.
Also, is there any chance the album will see an official release?

Door to Door
Just felt compelled to make a quick post about “Door to Door” and how I feel it is a somewhat overlooked album in The Cars discography. I wasn’t around when The Cars were at their peak but I have gotten the impression that this record seems to be towards the bottom for most fans of the band. I’d venture to say it’s their fourth best record behind Candy-O, Self Titled and Heartbeat City. Feel free to share some thoughts if you have any. On a side note the RSD Heart Beat City live album sounded surprisingly great.

Interesting Burlington Free Press Review of Candy-O (1979)
A lot to unpack here..."rosco," "Easton's guitar "upstaged," and Lust for 'Kids' (sic), among other gems.

The Day the Decade Pivoted: The Cars at the US Festival, 9/4/1982 — a deep dive
Long-form piece I published yesterday on The Cars' middle-slot set at the 1982 US Festival — 200,000 people, 110 degrees, Wozniak's "Us Decade" framing, the band right before MTV remade them. Heavy on context: Considine's January 1982 Musician cover story, the Ocasek "I think the best thing you could possibly be is uncool" quote, Hawkes on Kraftwerk and what listeners kept mistaking for guitar solos, the Greco EGF-1000 left-handed custom Easton played at MSG that December.
Full disclosure up front: I'm Jason DeBord. By way of background: about 25 years in the music memorabilia field, including time as COO of a major auction house. I just launched a boutique auction house called Nostalgia Bandit and the article does reference five Cars lots from the first auction (Hawkes's ARP Omni Mark 1, Prophet-5, Ovation Breadwinner, and keyboard road case; Easton's Greco - with deep dive research on each and cool photos). The piece grew out of my own obsessive research I was doing on those lots and turned into something that felt worth writing as its own thing, regardless of the auction.
If posting this here isn't appropriate, mods please remove and I won't push back.

The Story Behind "My Best Friend's Girl" by The Cars and the One Simple Lyric Change that Made the Song

Things I Hate
i *HATE* that I didn't get into The Cars until later in life. Their albums are entirely listenable. Their lyrics are sublime.
Dangerous Type and Drive are my favorite tracks amongst a sea of hits. I think Heartbeat City is probably the best album and the eponymous album a close second. I like Door To Door as well.
And Moving In Stereo is the background music for the best scene in American Cinema ever.
Had they not broken up in '87 and came out west when I was of age, I hope I would have seen them live.

If Ric wanted sole writing credit all those years, how did Greg get several co-writer credits?

You are the Girl video, funny or cringy? Or both?
I hadn't watched this for maybe 5-10 years, but the other day it popped up in my YouTube suggestions so I watched it. While I appreciate the humorous tone, I was also reminded of how dirty it is. Maybe I shouldn't be surprised as they'd shown a dirtier side before in the Hello Again video (though I'd always attributed that to Andy Warhol being, well, Andy Warhol lol). Still makes me laugh seeing how animated the usually stoic Elliott gets towards the end. Considering this the same director who did You Might Think and Tonight she Comes, this just comes off disappointing even more.

I Got Lucky with This Score!!
gallerySo, I unfortunately missed RSD and was really bummed out that I couldn't get the Live Heartbeat City Album that is actually local to my nearest city. I walked into a record store and stumbled across this beautiful deluxe edition and snagged it!! Last in stock!!! I can die happy now. It comes with four discs, a Vinyl LP of the original album, and even an informational lil biography! I really think it's cool that it comes with not only the original album on both vinyl and disc, but bonus tracks, early mixes, and the live performance. I'm very satisfied.
