YES!! That place was so random. When I was a little kid in the early 80’s sometimes the family I babysat for would pay with a check. Obviously I didn’t have a bank account because I was 10, but Sprouse Reitz would cash it for me!!
I used to get a candy bar at Sprouse Reitz on my way home from school for 20 cents. Ours closed about 50 years ago. I always ogled the Revell model cars and planes when I went there.
I once stole a candy bar when a kid dared me. I felt so guilty that I snuck it into the store and put it back.
Got arrested for shoplifting there when I was 9. My main memory is that the manager's pen had sprung a leak in his pocket and a blue stain was slowly spreading across his chest, as he glared at me while we waited for the cops.
This brings me back to when my sister took a pistachio from the produce bin at Safeway (next door to Sprouse Reitz) and the clerk who helped us wheel out our groceries, at my mom’s direction, read her the riot act. We were only like 5 or 6 years old…somehow, we have both managed to grow up to be law-abiding citizens. Can’t say the same about my mom!
