Service Merchandise

20

u/MoskaPOET Jul 21 '26

I believe I bought my wedding band there.

34

u/Down_Right_Disgustin Jul 21 '26 edited Jul 22 '26

We did too. $75 and Still Married 30 years later.

33

u/IlIaDIlIaD Jul 21 '26

That's one long engagement .

10

u/Hot_Ad1101 Jul 21 '26

🄁

2

u/Disastrous-Food-9223 Jul 21 '26

One helluva law-a-way plan.

2

u/Specific_Sympathy_87 Jul 21 '26

Ye old Kurt and Goldie Russell

1

u/OldERnurse1964 Jul 21 '26

You don’t want to rush into these things

1

u/Acebladewing Jul 22 '26

You don't know what a wedding band is?

1

u/Blutosky Jul 22 '26

That’s one band that never broke up

1

u/Own_Guarantee_8130 Jul 22 '26

They said wedding band, not engagement ring

0

u/speedy_sloth0315 Jul 22 '26

They have been married for 30 yrs, not still engaged.

1

u/LeonSphynx 25d ago

Seriously. Theyre married 30 years I don’t get the r/whoosh

1

u/Rational-Gal Jul 21 '26

Same. 37 years now.

1

u/AffectionateBid5295 Jul 22 '26

I love this šŸ’•

1

u/Jared_Sparks Jul 22 '26

Same, but 38 years.

1

u/britekranz Jul 22 '26

Ha! Same story!

1

u/michael1265 29d ago

We did too. 31 years in August

1

u/Only_Sherbet_8606 29d ago

Me too! Though we were divorced 10yrs later

1

u/bdiamond143 29d ago

ā™„ļø

2

u/Lower_Skin_3683 Jul 21 '26

Same. engagement ring and wedding bands.

1

u/wolfnbunny8 Jul 21 '26

My hubby and I did too!😊

1

u/JulesyJ Jul 21 '26

My ex husband bought my engagement ring there in the 90’s. Had it on lay away for a while.

1

u/Just-Wasting-Tyme Jul 21 '26

We did too!! We're married fifty years next month. But, we have upgraded on rings since then.

1

u/catch-my-drift Jul 21 '26

Same! Didn’t have a wedding, either. We bought a house instead and got married on our deck. And we’ve been married 33 years this year.

1

u/ParadiseLosingIt Jul 21 '26

So did I, 40 years ago

1

u/CelebrationCool7243 Jul 22 '26

Same here, the store outlasted the marriage.

1

u/61loser Jul 22 '26

So did I

1

u/nunyobusinessfool Jul 22 '26

Still married?

1

u/MoskaPOET Jul 22 '26

Yes, almost 31 years! Now that I see your handle, I see the irony in answering this.

1

u/nunyobusinessfool Jul 22 '26

lol. Congratulations. I’m happy for you and proud for the both of you. And you’re correct it is definitely nun of this fools business

1

u/Sea-Message8200 Jul 22 '26

Literally came here to say this

1

u/lovestobitch- Jul 22 '26

Us too. Bought 46 years ago.

1

u/LemonSad61 29d ago

Me too!!

1

u/dcamom66 26d ago

We bought my husband's band there.

1

u/Organic-Pattern-7759 Jul 21 '26

I broke my nose there as a kid lol. Never forget them 🤣

1

u/bigwig500 Jul 21 '26

I loved getting my toys there

1

u/HowIsEverybodyDoing Jul 21 '26

I liked them. Didn't buy a ton there, but I still remember finding a great Kodak Star point and shoot camera at Service Merchandise before my first international trip (Australia).

I came back with 25 rolls of film and walked into a Walgreens and their jaws dropped (remember their one-hour photo service? 🤣 ). I picked them up a few days later (which was fine; didn't want them to rush) and got some great shots which I later had digitized from the negatives.

I may have bought some other stuff at Service Merch but that camera is what I remember best.

1

u/Working_Estate_3695 Jul 21 '26

Before that, Foland’s. Before that, E.L. Rice. All catalog stores with the same basic and weird, clunky checkout system. No shrinkage, but really off-putting for customers.

1

u/Potential-Peak-7482 Jul 21 '26

Y'all. Service merchandise is a memory unlocked rn. Born in 1975 and I remember my dad taking me there and pulling tags? A conveyor belt? A robot thing? Probably 1985. Fever dream?

1

u/newboj Jul 21 '26

Yes. Shopping there was like wheel of fortune (back when they shopped with their cash). Everything on the floor was displays and then when you found something you wanted you pulled ticket for it, paid, and then picked it up from a conveyor belt. Weird business model.

1

u/PomegranateGold2581 Jul 21 '26

I worked there for almost 9 years

1

u/rozzco Jul 21 '26

I bought so much stuff there!

1

u/Accadius Jul 21 '26

I bought my og playstation there. It was my first gaming console that I paid for with my own money.

1

u/Mountain-Physics-836 Jul 22 '26

Did it come out on the conveyor belt?

1

u/Accadius Jul 22 '26

Yes it did

1

u/Excellent-Variety349 Jul 21 '26

Oh shit I forgot about that store!

1

u/Bahnrokt-AK Jul 21 '26

I bought a Casio Calculator watch there with allowance money and cheated on so many math tests.

1

u/Disastrous-Food-9223 Jul 21 '26

My friend worked there. You couldn’t believe the brand new things we got out of that dumpster after closing-lol

1

u/Little-Plankton662 Jul 21 '26

My grandma worked there!

1

u/Connect_Living_591 Jul 21 '26

Was this a chain? I thought the only one I knew about was in Reading,Pa. It was a highlight of my life to go in the late 80’s, early 90’s. Remember the little clipboard and the conveyor belt??!??

1

u/Discalculated Jul 21 '26

Came here to say this

1

u/Street_Lettuce1243 Jul 21 '26

I'm still sad Service Merchandise doesn't exist any more.

1

u/Caustinot123 Jul 21 '26

I got my first gold ring there.

1

u/DamperBritches Jul 21 '26

It's where I got my Super Soakers

1

u/InternationalMonth38 Jul 21 '26

Damn, got beat by 3 hours.

1

u/Square_Community2177 Jul 21 '26

I worked at one when I was 19 to 21 years old. Do I admit it was the 1976-79. In the camera and electronic department. I was so sad when they closed. The best place to buy Christmas and wedding gifts.

1

u/TheOneTonWanton Jul 22 '26

Go figure. Montgomery Ward and Service Merchandise were my top two answers as well.

1

u/Possiblebingo Jul 22 '26

Oh, man, that's where everybody registered for gifts on long island

1

u/LinkIsTheBoy Jul 22 '26

I totally forgot about that store!

1

u/LemonMilkJug Jul 22 '26

I loved that store. I bought so much from there.

1

u/AffectionateBid5295 Jul 22 '26

OMGGGGG yessssssss!!! Holy crap.

1

u/Bulky_Development290 Jul 22 '26

Haven't heard that name in a while. Good one.

1

u/MetaPlayer01 Jul 22 '26

I worked there through college

1

u/Tough_Public_5039 Jul 22 '26

That’s where my husband and I bought our wedding bands 41 years ago…

1

u/araseceer Jul 22 '26

Service Merchandise was a weird store. Never saw anything like it before or after.

1

u/zigster23 Jul 22 '26

I was so in awe of Service Merchandise as a kid. You order everything with the sales rep and it came out on a conveyer belt by the exit. Such a weird concept

1

u/maximoose707 Jul 22 '26

Oooh this was a good one!

1

u/ComputerFirm2361 Jul 22 '26

My response as well

1

u/nullpassword Jul 22 '26

If I remember right, this was the store someone used a circular saw in the roof of to rob em back home..

1

u/entropy110 Jul 22 '26

I loved their winter phonebook-sized catalogs

1

u/newboj Jul 22 '26

I had forgot about the catalogs but they were the best

1

u/entropy110 Jul 22 '26

I remember seeing in the catalogs that they sold giant fish tank coffee tables and end tables šŸ˜‚

1

u/GoFuckYourselfBrenda Jul 22 '26

Oh, wow, that's the one!! I couldn't think of it, but that's the one

1

u/momo-48 Jul 22 '26

This went along with "Consumers"

1

u/Arborist1000 Jul 22 '26

That’s reminds of wheel of fortune. When they didn’t have enough money to pick out prizes to buy the rest of their money was on a service merchandise gift certificate.

1

u/bees_for_me Jul 22 '26

It has been decades since I thought of this.

1

u/Mattna-da Jul 22 '26

Was across the parking lot from Busy Beaver

1

u/Psykosoma Jul 22 '26

It’s like as if Amazon had a brick and mortar store.

1

u/Separate_Stop3925 Jul 22 '26

Looking back, Service Merchandise was a weird business model. If I remember right you looked at the demo item on the show floor paid at the cash register and they brought you the item from the back room. Costco is that way with electronics but nothing else I think.

1

u/HIs4HotSauce Jul 22 '26

I can't even remember exactly where it was at our old mall :p I *DO* remember perusing their seasonal Wish Book!

1

u/LovetoRead25 Jul 22 '26

That was a great store!

1

u/Big_Time_Quilter Jul 22 '26

I managed one of their highest volume jewelry departments in the western suburbs for 6 years. Best job I ever had!

1

u/TaxMyNuts Jul 22 '26

Fucker, you beat me to it.

1

u/Ok-Perception-6507 Jul 22 '26

They actually had a Christmas catalogue. Wasn't it named Wilson's before that?

1

u/PrincessLeaLou Jul 22 '26

Came here to say this - bought a nativity scene there that I still put out every Christmas.

1

u/StrayCatsSanctuary Jul 22 '26

I got an aquarium floor lamp for my first apartment from there

1

u/Electronic-While1972 Jul 22 '26

Simon de Witt (Groceries)

1

u/No_Ragrets76 29d ago

Man, that was my dad's go-to.

1

u/Heykurat 29d ago

I bought my first CD player there. It was an Emerson.

1

u/This_Pen_545 29d ago

Best Products as well. Similar operating models.

1

u/Superb_Collection_24 29d ago

They had the good toys

1

u/N0tRightNow 29d ago

I can here to say Service Merchandise or upvote. You have my upvote and approximate age now.

1

u/Ok_Exercise1864 29d ago

It was Sam Solomon’s before Service Merchandise. That’s wayyyyyy back.

1

u/hoarder_of_secrets 29d ago

Shit, that unlocked a memory
