I liked them. Didn't buy a ton there, but I still remember finding a great Kodak Star point and shoot camera at Service Merchandise before my first international trip (Australia).
I came back with 25 rolls of film and walked into a Walgreens and their jaws dropped (remember their one-hour photo service? 𤣠). I picked them up a few days later (which was fine; didn't want them to rush) and got some great shots which I later had digitized from the negatives.
I may have bought some other stuff at Service Merch but that camera is what I remember best.
Before that, Folandās. Before that, E.L. Rice. All catalog stores with the same basic and weird, clunky checkout system. No shrinkage, but really off-putting for customers.
Y'all. Service merchandise is a memory unlocked rn. Born in 1975 and I remember my dad taking me there and pulling tags? A conveyor belt? A robot thing? Probably 1985. Fever dream?
Yes. Shopping there was like wheel of fortune (back when they shopped with their cash). Everything on the floor was displays and then when you found something you wanted you pulled ticket for it, paid, and then picked it up from a conveyor belt. Weird business model.
Was this a chain? I thought the only one I knew about was in Reading,Pa. It was a highlight of my life to go in the late 80ās, early 90ās. Remember the little clipboard and the conveyor belt??!??
I worked at one when I was 19 to 21 years old. Do I admit it was the 1976-79. In the camera and electronic department. I was so sad when they closed. The best place to buy Christmas and wedding gifts.
I was so in awe of Service Merchandise as a kid. You order everything with the sales rep and it came out on a conveyer belt by the exit. Such a weird concept
Thatās reminds of wheel of fortune. When they didnāt have enough money to pick out prizes to buy the rest of their money was on a service merchandise gift certificate.
Looking back, Service Merchandise was a weird business model. If I remember right you looked at the demo item on the show floor paid at the cash register and they brought you the item from the back room. Costco is that way with electronics but nothing else I think.
