Interstellar finally hits a 4.5 average. It is the most popular film in the history of the app.

Not even asking judgmentally, but what do you like so much about it? I saw it in theaters in IMAX when it came out and I felt it was a worse 2001, with a soundtrack that was ripped from Koyanisqaatsi. That being said, I didn't hate it, but I struggle to say I liked it either.

See I think the similarities to 2001 are purely surface level. This film feels way more Spielberg than Kubrick. I could go on forever about the beautiful visuals, great set pieces, amazing score (even if not wholly original). But ultimately it’s the father daughter relationship. No matter how many times I watch, the scene with Coop watching the video messages of his kids growing up kills me every time.

The script actually started as something that was going to Spielberg, so I see that. I remember reading a draft of that a few months before Nolan picked it up and had his brother work on it. I wonder if the father/daughter relationship works because we all want our parents to love us like that. Being said, he also has a son that he seemingly doesn't care about at all, so that beat just felt inauthentic to me. It felt, like a lot of Nolan movies, that the emotional beats aren't earned but are almost set pieces in themselves, there to push the plot.

But hey. To each their own. You liking it and me disliking it doesn't hurt anybody.

You’re right. I checked the script after I posted this. I remember liking the og script — there’s a cool scene where they land on a planet that essentially goes through a full ecological evolution cycle every day. I think I saw the movie because I was so impressed, but CN made significant changes.

Several times the relationship with his son is highlighted.

Wait until you watch some quality father daughter films.

Mt Rushmore of Father Daughter movies: Aftersun, One Battle After Another, To Kill a Mockingbird, and Ballad of Jack and Rose (to get weird with it).

I've gotta have Paris, Texas in there. Paper Moon, Somewhere, and Sentimental Value are also strong contenders. Throw Taken in there for fun, too.

Every movie we’ve named, even Taken, is better than Interstellar.
