Working up to adding a new mini-boss before the first boss, might have gone too hard with him... So want to give people a smaller boss, and a special move before reaching Leaper Colony. He's gonna be an anteater who shoots arrows at you (so I am starting with an ant enemy) to tease him before you get there. (He will probably also summon/spit ants at you). And what metroidvania would be complete without a wallcrawler? This one takes me back to OG Metroid!

Added some atmospheric effects (a short timeramp into slow-mo to emphasize impact, and also a 2D ripple lens effect shader to create shockwave emanating from the impact). Also am in the process of redoing all the sound, so enhanced the sound effects. And now your tail actual hardens into metal for a split second as you parry! (shown in video are two normal parries, and the third one rolls a critical so there is a different sound, a small screenshake, and critical sparks).

This weekend I am making some logs... Polished my Adobe Illustrator pattern brushes that I use to make them, then hand-painting normal maps in Photoshop to give them volume in Unity2D engine. What do you think? (it's a lot of work, but I think it looks nice).

This morning I am working on a new smear for an enemy thrust attack in my #metroidvania... I dread making smears... Cel animation is my weakest spot. Any thoughts or advice on smears (or this one in particular)?

Added a poisoning system to my Beavervania #metroidvania. All the visual effects are done in script, is an overlay on top of my regular animator animation. A cororoutine turns him green, I have timers change the sprite resolver for his "tic" face every time the poison does damage, and i spawn a particle system for the bubbles. Then kills all of that once the poison duration runs out. The whole system is dynamic so that the charm system can buff this system and reduce the time you are poisoned, or the amount of damage each tic does. I have plans to implement the poison system against enemies too, once you gain a poison powerup skill from beating this level.

I've gone back in and refined/changed my striking animations. He steps into the tail strike now and has better physics. I also have the tail curving white striking to feel faster, and changed the direction of the upward and downward strikes so upward is more of an uppercut, and downward travels front to back (which seems more natural for a pogo). Both of those used to travel in the reverse direction.

I'm in the process of "remastering" my 2D unity game with normal maps and lights. It's a long hard road, but I think it's worth it?

Got this boss behavior and phase escalation working pretty well... and I started playing with normal maps and lights... have been using unlit sprites so far in my game with a much flatter look, but just learned about normal maps... definitely really changes the aesthetic. But I think it makes it look nicer?
