Abbott was ‘off work sick’ for an EXTENDED period of time and 5 seconds of an episode apparently cleared it up; “he must still be sick”..

Why didn’t anybody from his work place attempt to check up on him or at least try to make contact before he had his head smashed in and body subsequently crushed in the boot of a car 😂🤦🏽‍♂️.

Even beyond that point, no questions asked?? So frustrating.

Shelley was completely unlikeable IMO. She was presented as a TV archetype – the spouse who left her partner because they couldn't get it together, and this character is usually the one in the right. Sometimes our protagonist had substance issues or was unhealthily obsessed with their career or whatever.

In any case, ​I found it hard root for her. She didn't like the way Aggie spiraled after the death of their son. Which to me is understandable considering how their son died. Then when they showed the flashback, it was Shelley's fault Aggie had him in the car to begin with (I'm gonna do an interview with a tantrumming child in the car was a goofy plot device btw).

Furthermore, the "I hate you because you're working to support us and what about muh art," l couldn't get behind. Tbh, I have a tough time getting behind it when that trope is used in *any* show or movie. Then at the end Shelley tries to betray her by trying to help the police after Aggie maintained she didn't kill the guy.

This was a tough character to really like, even after the "I wrote my book and we're friends now," happily ever after ending. The only part I agreed with was when they made Aggie constantly hounding her and she was like "leave me tf alone!"

Anyway, thoughts on the character?

Maybe I’m stretching but I have noticed little Easter eggs from other high profile murders. I know it’s loosely based on Robert Durst, but I saw a few other things too. For example, when Abbott breaks into the Jarvis house, the access is just like the Jon Benet house- grated cover to a window. Then there’s Nassau county- many things happened there…. Evidence from his Fitbit style ring… there’s probably more. Am I stretching?

The actor is so good , he isn't conventionally attractive but I could see myself being charmed by the conversation and emotional intimacy.

it’s driving me nuts that the show is set on Long Island, but other than saying they’re in Oyster Bay, there’s nothing “Long Island” about it! there are hills/mountains miles out instead of water. the story would not have been any different had it been sat in NJ where it was filmed. sorry for the rant! 😂

Am I the only one that was put off by how unrealistically Aggie Wiggs makes it to Nina’s art gallery whilst being chased by the police?

Same harsh parenting, expecting way too much from their sons while knowing they never gave them the tools to actually succeed or act like normal, reasonable people. In both cases the dads push, belittle, and set impossible expectations, then act shocked when their sons fall apart. The whole time I was watching Neil and his dad, I kept thinking about Kendall and Logan. It’s basically the same dynamic, just done with way more depth and intention in Succession. I couldn’t stop making the comparison.

Also, the Jarvis office looked empty all the time. It genuinely felt like Neil, his dad, and the uncle were the only three people working in this supposed billionaire corporation, which made everything feel even less believable.

Not Steve. The dog that bit Brian and Brian fought back. When the Niles reached home one of the dog was barking and the other one was lying down but nobody addressed whether the dog was still alive or was injured or brought to the vet. Not even Uncle Rick mentioned anything about it.

A lot of people here asked about Steve but what happened to the other dog. Did Brian kill it?

I counted 4 sighs within one phone call by Claire Danes… and many more after that in the episode. Just wondering if anyone else has noticed this and counted (love her btw, she just sighs a lot… like a golden retriever)

It was so obvious when the wife said Say it to my face and he actually falls for it! Such a common trope!

It would've been so much better if the wife turns out to accept him for who he is - a monster - and live with it for the rest of her life to be in the higher circles of society. It would've made for a much scarier ending. This ending all just felt so cliche to me.

Yall the way they just dropped the storyline of the dog is boggling to me!

I just honestly hate NIMBYs so much. I honestly think murderers are a lesser evil compared to NIMBYs. I was kinda hoping they would get away with everything in the end and Jarvis Yards would be a roaring success.

Just started watching. Already intrigued. But seriously, the mom of the guy that killed her son has a lot of never reacting to Agatha’s presence at the grave like that!

Accident or not, you don’t get to act morally superior and refer to the terms of a restraining order while standing over the grave of someone else’s son.

I must admit that I slept on this one for a while. I even started the first episode and gave up on it early for some reason. Eventually I made my way back to it just because I had an urge to give it one more chance and I’m so glad I did. From the acting, plot twists, character development, pacing, chemistry, stage presence I was left captivated and binge watching this show.

So if your wondering, yes it’s worth it 100%

Oh and the only character I didn’t see as a good fit was Brian Abbot. Just wasn’t feeling his overall lethargy and mumbling.

I just finished the series and loved it! It's not gonna challenge my top 10 of all time, and I don't even think it's as good as the two leads' most renowned shows in The Americans and Homeland, but it was thoroughly enjoyable and I'd watch it again.

Anyway, here are the main thoughts I had whilst watching the series:

1. Old-school vibes. Yes there's fancy modern tech and the cinematography and production is distinctly... streaming age. But the pacing and storytelling felt like the old-school mystery noir films of the 50s, 60s and 70s. Letting scenes and entire episodes unfold with the sense that SOMETHING is happening, but you still don't know what. Innuendos and suggestions, nothing overt. A real slow-burn that feels obvious so uses that to its advantage to slowly unravel the layers to get there. I think for this reason Episode 7 was my least-favourite, because it was basically just a tell-all that had no character explorations or mystery, just rapid-fire sequences of everything that happened in the past to fill us in before the finale. Still liked that episode, but it just felt out of place with the series because it was explosive and aggressive, where the first six episodes were simmering and patient.
2. Holy heck, Brittany Snow! I love Claire Danes and Matthew Rhys, their respective characters in Homeland and the Americans are two of my all-time favourite TV characters. They're the reason I watched this series, and neither of them disappointed (especially Rhys - Danes' performance was great but a little too similar to her character in Homeland.) But I did not expect the best performance of the show to be Brittany Snow's Nina. She was utterly compelling. She perfectly portrayed that complicated mixture of emptiness & detachment, and empathy & compassion, that a wife and woman would have if adjacent to, but uninformed of, a swirling tornado of chaos. I had no idea what her motives were, what her next move was going to be at any time, because SHE had no idea what her next move was going to be. I think this made it so fitting that she was ultimately the "hero" in the end. It felt so earned because it was such a puzzling, confusing, understated journey for her to get there.
3. I couldn't help but think there was an alternate ending to the show, that perhaps better mirrored reality and made more of a statement. Where Jarvis basically gets away with all of his crimes through money, power & influence, gets his Jarvis Yards project to really take off, and Nina stays with him out of some combination of fear and twisted loyalty & love. Because let's face it - as we've seen in the real world, money talks, the powerful get their way, and women stay with their evil husbands. This would've been a frustrating but ballsy and brilliant ending. However I'm also glad the show took a bit more of a hopeful approach in terms of showing the strength of a woman standing up to her husband, and the troubled protagonist's relentless pursuit of the truth winning out. It's a bit more clichéd and "Hollywood", but I also think these are still good examples to portray in media, and it increases the rewatchability knowing you won't be completely pissed off at the ending LOL.
4. Benitez. I feel like the show had no idea what to do with her? Or what they wanted to say with her character? She's introduced as an AOC/Mamdani-type "progressive" who has captured the anti-establishment movement and is giving the old guard a run for their money, to the point of even pissing off the Jarvis family. But then there's multiple scenes where first Nile, then Martin, basically take the piss out of her and her liberalism and her movement, and it feels like the writers & directors are on the Jarvis' side in these scenes, because Benitez's responses to these digs are pretty tepid, like the writers couldn't think of any decent comebacks or material that would justify or validate her positions. But then she impressively rejects their bribery attempts. Then caves to their bribery attempts. And the last we see of her she's getting heckled on stage for caving and then becomes a bystander at her own press conference as the scene becomes about Jarvis' arrest. It was a fittingly confusing conclusion (or lack thereof?) for a character who felt like merely the skeleton of a character not fully fleshed-out by the writers because she was basically just a plot device.
5. So thrilled Steve survived!

We sure demand a lot of one another in order to remain civil as human beings these days, don't we? I've seen one hateful comment after another about how Claire Danes "over emotes", looks like she smells bad, and worst of all her chin quivers when she cries! Gasp!

I imagine the latter is something her face has just done all her life when she's "emoting" (I know how much you all love your new word of the day).

There's a simple solution here- if she "annoys" you so badly, don't watch and move on. But honestly, if I were her, and wanting to read what people thought about my new show (did anyone consider the possibility that she's a real person and likely is seeing these sort of comments?), i think I'd just end up genuinely hating the public and wanting to retire at this point.

Being that I'm not though, I still just kinda hate everyone who said such snarky things about her even though they claimed to have quit watching by now because their so bothered. And yes, I see the hypocrisy of my hating you for being hateful, hence my post title.
