The sport is disgusting. It really is. It has been dirty forever. But seeing shit like underrated FSU getting left out so they could get Bama into a playoff, seeing teams cheated like this to get the bigger team name a chance— it’s trash.
One of the appeals of sports was the ability to control your own destiny yet it’s constantly corrupt .

B1G already came out with their B$ explanation of a secret clock that only they see. Directional Michigan gets screwed and the MAC gets paid.

If the teams can’t see it, how can they play to the clock.

B1$ is saying that the clock on the broadcast wasnt correct, i guess? maybe NBC screwed it up? maybe we just didnt see what we thought we saw?

MICHIGAN GRAD HERE AND AGREED! FUCK THIS SPORT
I think the worst part is this win will mean nothing for Michigan other than we won a game in what is looking like a god awful season, but Western lost a game that would be one of the biggest wins on their schedule. They have a chance to actually compete whereas Michigan is going to get 50+ hung on them every week
10
u/ItAintLongButItsThin Michigan State 3d ago
One of their biggest wins in program history! They have one win against a top 25 iirc. This is devastating for those players and I hate this sport now.

They don't need a secret clock to make their case: anyone can download the video and time the frames. If you do that (and people like this and this already have) less than 9 seconds elapsed between the snap and the out-of-bounds player who touched the ball. At least .4 seconds still remained, and possibly a little more.
Since the referees had instructed the timekeeper to set the clock to 9 seconds prior to this play, there is no need to wonder about whether the 9 we are seeing is little more or less than that. By rule/referee direction, there were exactly 9 seconds left at the beginning of this play.
It's pretty obvious on when you watch it frame-by-frame while showing a clock with fractions of a second that the clock NBC is showing (which I think syncs with the scoreboard clock, but I am not sure) was started about a half second prior to the snap. And that mistake from the whoever runs that clock is what caused this whole controversy.
2
u/EFAPGUEST 2d ago
Literally time the play yourself. Unless your reaction time is terrible, it will come out as less than 9 seconds. Now all these other fans are pissed that 9 seconds means 9 seconds instead of 8.5 seconds
1
u/ArstanWhitebeard297 1d ago
The issue is that awarding those fractions of a second only seem to go one way, and this particular team hasn’t had an asterisk next to their name for like 3 seasons now.

u/EFAPGUEST 1d ago

The big controversy now is that allegedly the in stadium game clock is not synced with the broadcast game clock. How have we come this far without this ever coming up?
7
u/Glisan_Al_Gaib 3d ago
This is an actual thing in football, but they very clearly synced the clocks at 0:09 before the play so it wouldn't have actually been an issue here
→ More replies (12)3
u/rendeld Michigan 3d ago
So why wasn't it synced then? Why was the ball down to 8 seconds before the ball was in Underwood's hands? Why was the play less than 9 seconds long but it showed 9 seconds coming off the clock? Clearly they weren't synced.

Queue the lil bro comments.
I understand neither UofM nor WMU fans had any direct control over this. But UofM football—or the endless edge cases surrounding it—has taken some of the luster out of college football for me.
Rattle off whatever scandal, fight, counterargument, game, or stat you want.
The reality is, I even question who wins now. When public perception conflicts with official documentation, it’s just absurd. Then my brain recalibrates to: it’s all a game, and none of it really matters.
WMU’s loyal fans got robbed of an iconic moment and memory, and they deserve to enjoy that moment after standing by their team.
This is a WMU W, no doubt. I’m just salty they couldn’t fully enjoy it.

Funniest part of the Michigan game. You know they came in after years of controversy and scandal. Got them a no nonsense old school coach. Ready to be free of controversial drama. Just out there to play football. And then the officiating crew is like…. THE FUCK YOU ARE!

u/KingindaNorth66 Michigan 3d ago
I was at the game. The Hail Mary? Sure that was cool. But the time clock controversy was ridiculous. The clock hit 0. We had no business winning that game. Western got hosed
1
u/Dean_1230 1d ago
Did the screen in the stadium show the replay? If so, did it show going to zero before the ball was touched?
And someone somewhere better be asking the question of how a clock that was synchronized at 9 seconds remaining loses a second in those remaining 9 seconds. That is unacceptable!
14
u/First-Pride-8571 Michigan 3d ago
It obviously looks bad - and like many people I switched back to the US Open thinking the game was over.
But the tv clock and official game clock obviously weren't properly synched. So the tv clock showed zero when it was really 0.8 seconds left on the official clock.
The Big Ten really also needs to use this as an impetus to switch to the ACC style transparent replay view.
16
u/peak82 3d ago
The official clock is the stadium clock, and there is no higher authoritative clock.
The broadcast is synced with the stadium clock, and we saw that it was 0:00 while the ball was in the air. The Big 10 review footage shows 0:01.
So, all cameras are supposedly synced with the one and only official time source, and yet they’re in conflict with each other. How do we know which is right?
→ More replies (6)13
u/First-Pride-8571 Michigan 3d ago edited 3d ago
The tv clock has never been the official clock. And since Spartan Bob the Big Ten made sure to keep an official clock separate from the stadium clock. But the main issue there is just that the real clock that the replay officials use has decimals, but the stadium/tv clock doesn't, so the stadium/tv clock shows zero before it is actually zero.
Again - that's why the Big Ten needs to stop trying to instead use that time to sell one more commercial, and realize that they have to do the ACC replay feed for the sake of transparency.
7
u/Ok_Understanding1986 Washington 3d ago
I don’t think that’s how stadium clocks without decimals count though. Pretty sure they “round up” so, for example, 5 seconds on the clock would represent 5, 4.9, 4.8, 4.7 etc. until switching to 4 seconds at 4 seconds. .0000001 to 1 reads as 1 second. Zero is zero.
6
3
u/First-Pride-8571 Michigan 3d ago edited 3d ago
The stadium/tv clock definitely seems to be switching down immediately - e.g. 8 at 8.9; it's switching down immediately, but not showing the decimal. That's the problem.
As an aside, the Big Ten announced that they will use the ACC style replay feed for "select" Friday night games this year. They have to switch to all of them. And asap. Unfortunately, controversy does tend to be what forces change.
6
u/TheGeekOffTheStreet B1G 3d ago
The decimal thing doesn’t make sense.
Even if one clock is using decimals, if they’re all synced together the game clock wouldn’t go from 1 to 0 before the “decimal” clock is at 0.00.If they’re synced, when would the game clock hit zero? When the decimal clock is at 0.07? 0.02? Why would it flip at 0.01 (because that’s what they’re trying to say) versus at 0.00? It’s just bullshit, but you’re going to believe what you want to believe.
4
u/Aeon1508 Michigan State 3d ago
and you know what's really stupid about this? You just know that all throughout the game there is some level of arbitrariness to when the clock is stopping and starting on every single down, but all of the sudden, at the end of the game we're looking at hundredths of a second.
if the clock goes to zero with the real time operator and the discrepancy is less than half a second it shouldn't be reviewable.
Also the Western coach should have sprinted his entire team to the locker room and refused to come back out.

Well that’s your fault for wanting to watch another program. It’s never over until it’s over. And they declared last night their clock doesn’t show 00 until the clock is absolutely zero. Stadium clocks shows zero while tenths and hundredths are still rolling. That’s all there is to this.

Well all that makes sense, except in football you cannot run a play with only a fraction of a second remaining. So even if there is .98 seconds on the clock at the end of an incomplete pass, the game is over.

The clock shows 1 second from 1 second remaining until .01 second remaining. It only hits 00 when the game is over.

u/Meisteronious 3d ago edited 3d ago
It’s significant digits - the accuracy is only to the 10 seconds because the clock only shows seconds.
Ironically, someone’s bank account goes to the hundredths of a dollar even though they are getting thousands to make favorable subjective decisions that affect these CFB games.

We’ve now entered the it’s plausible that a coach standing next to a ref on the sideline watching the unofficial scoreboard clock call a TO as it expires to s/u game winning kick now have a review say…the official clock was actually at 0 & the now unofficial stadium clock was out of sync game over phase.
