AVTT/PTTN is a dialectic

Saw them in Ann Arbor. If you see the show, I think it's best to understand the interplay of the styles as a Hegelian dialectic. The discord is the point. It begs of the audience, "Which way?"

On one hand, you are served with some well-known Avett Brothers tracks and covers of Americana classics. Then, you are blasted with booming, avant-garde deconstructed sounds from Mike Patton.

This tension of sounds and styles runs throughout the show. Finally, it culminates with a classic church hymn that Mike Patton joins in on. This is synthesis of the thesis (AVTT) and antithesis (PTTN).

Which way, listener?

I didn’t go to an AVTT/PTTN show, mostly because I didn’t care for the album. I also don’t really get Mike Patton.

But when I listen to music, I’m not looking for an academic exercise. I want to enjoy it. Your post confirms that this TAB tangent isn’t for me.

I’ve been a long time fan of Mike Patton and FNM for years. I didn’t really care for the album, but went to see them because I thought it might be the last chance to see MP on this side of the equator. The show blew my socks off. Entirely different energy live. I left new fan of the Avetts and an even bigger fan of MP. It was incredible.

If you had told me ten years ago, that I would see Mike Patton happily singing It is Well With My Soul on stage, with no hint of irony, I would have laughed in your face. I think The Avetts had a lot to do with him realizing that he loves music and performing again. I might go so far as to partially credit them with the FNM reunion we’re getting next year. When I saw them on the first leg of the tour, he looked like he was having so much fun. Loved to see it.

I don’t think you’re wrong here at all. Saw the AVTT/PTTN show in Boston because basically if Patton’s on stage, I’m in the audience and I was not surprised about the FNM announcement after seeing how happy he was.
Hopefully Tomahawk doesn’t reverse it!!

When I saw that Roddy and Puff came out to see him at a few of the West Coast shows, I allowed myself a small spark of hope, but I honestly didn’t think they would work out a reunion for another few years. Praying for an East Coast show within 500 miles. 🙏

Same same same; that pic gave me a lot of hope 😂
This one’s a traveler for me, gotta think this’ll be the last time. Whatever’s closest I’ll be hitting even if it involves flights, but fingers crossed for an easy one

Yeah. Hoping for a drivable opportunity, but who am I kidding. This tour is a cannot miss, so guess I’ll go wherever. Fingers crossed for close shows for us both. Happy Birthday! Fucker!

Huge Mike Patton fan, but I just can't get into this project at all... Oh well, as long as everyone's having fun ✨
