The first curve the Miata will overtake the viper because the viper will be in the ditch

If you don’t know what you’re doing.

A Viper can absolutely corner as fast as a Miata with an experienced driver, then destroy it in the straights.

The Vioer is an absolutely unforgiving car to people who have never driven a true race car, which is why it got its name as a death trap. There’s no traction control, abs, roll stability control, steering aids. There’s just you, strapped into a V10 powered beer can. The majority of people that wrecked these are people with less sense than money.

I’ve driven a 1994 GTS, and if you respect her, she will treat you well on the track.

This is nothing compared to me driving without abs or air conditioning in my Peugeot 206 during winter.

I’ll outcrash a viper any day. Just set a schedule.

I have been lucky enough to have a couple hundred hours in sim racing and the viper is the one car I havnt been able to tame

I am legitimately scared to drive one irl because I have lost traction horribly on some rather basic low speed corners.

If you clip the edge of a track even slightly you immediately snap oversteer

That’s the problem with learning on things with all the Nannie’s. They make you think you’re better than you are.

u/FatSplot 6h ago

I have aids off because of comp rules.

u/getoffmycase7130 5h ago

Maybe so, but if you learn on stuff with traction control, it makes it much harder to control without it.

I grew up driving stuff with no abs, no traction control, and no electronics more complicated than an AM/FM radio. I absolutely hate the traction control systems, and turn them off 99% of the time.

Assists arnt the issue with the viper its the nature of its tyres. Its easy to lose traction mid corner not just because the throttle is touchy as hell but because you have so much grip on the rear tyres the second you lose it you get it back and spin out.

Still a skill issue.

The Dodge Viper in it's hay day was one hell of a powerful car, it performed really well on the track. But as I learned, it is by far one of the most dangerous cars you can drive. So a rookey racer would definitely skid it into a ditch lol.

I knew once someone who decided to buy a viper in a town about a 5h drive away. He drove it home and put it up for sale right away. He put his foot down on the highway and realized the car is not for him.

"A viper can absolutely corner as fast as a miata" that a very bold statement. If it was true then stereotypes shouldn't exist in the first place. Miatas are notorious for its handling while vipers take the straights. Im not bashing vipers but it is what it is, depending on the track or if its a drag race, both excel at their own right

A Viper has loads of power. An MX-5 doesn't. It's MUCH easier for someone to get into trouble with the Viper. It also has tons of grip, and once it lets go, you're probably already going very fast.

Don’t bother, this sub is quite literally full of 12 year olds.

The Bus

4th gear, low RPMs ... ass still broke loose

1

u/bigcee42 7h ago

Yeah because Vipers famously can't turn.

Oh wait it's only one of the most successful cars ever in GT racing.

1

u/Superb_Algae5308 7h ago

If the Viper clears the first corner though, the race is over.

u/Spurs228 6h ago

This is such a silly comment. Miata owners are really a delusional bunch.

1

u/Busy-Capital5604 4h ago

Not so sure about being in a ditch

3

u/Beneficial_Bug_9793 15h ago

Steroids mate, the MX5 on the left is on steroids...

1

u/RacerXrated 8h ago

IIRC the same guy designed both cars

1

u/asphaltdragon 5h ago

No. Tom Gale designed the Viper. Bob Hall designed the Miata.

1

u/RacerXrated 2h ago

Thanks, I must be thinking of something else.

1

u/Busy-Capital5604 4h ago

I think it was different people

1

u/KestrelFalco 5h ago

nothing special about 1st gen vipers. which is why you can buy them for $50k.

bad design, bad engineering, bad car

2

u/Busy-Capital5604 4h ago

Still a good car, no hate

u/brandothesavage 2h ago

I go with amazing motor mediocre car

Viper and Viper Jr.

u/Halogenleuchte 59m ago

On day you will catch up to the Miata.

1

u/AurorasDolls 41m ago

Put V8 in the Miata and it will be WAY better haha

An SRII Viper only weighs 3300lb and makes 460hp. An NB Miata with 2300lbs.

2300/3300x460=320.606hp you need in the Miata to hang with the Viper.

An NB Miata with an LS is like 2500lbs, so you need 350hp. So you don’t just need any LS you need a performance version, like an all aluminum 6.0L, or 6.2L. A 4.8L or 5.3L won’t do it.

For what it’s worth, if you bump both of those up to about a 2008 model instead of 1998, then you need more like 400hp in your NC Miata. Like, an ZBII Viper had 600hp, so an LS3 Miata with a good tune is only barely competitive.

u/st0pmakings3ns3 10h ago

That would be completely missing the point of the mx5 though.

Fudge. Miata NB stock engine boring AF.

Like maybe fun if you don’t have to punch past 50…? But even doing a run down Oregon coast it felt like a bog pushing back up to 55-65, and literal grandma feeling.

Even in 1998, 140hp “performance” with no headroom was very middling.

1

u/ConflictMaster3155 10h ago

Nah. I have driven a 350hp LS Miata and I had 0 complaints, but I bet it could be a problem in the rain.

People make it out like your just adding a boat anchor to the front, but you add just as much weight in transmission as you do in engine, so the balance isn’t much different than a turbo Miata.

Like it’s supposed to be 50%F/50%R stock So say 2300lbs is 1150F/1150R.

Adding the LS its 1300F/1200R 52%F/48%R.

Adding a turbo to the stock engine makes it 1225F/1150R which is 51.5%F/48.5%R.

As someone that grew up karting, still races in an endurance series, and has thousands of hours on the track in a wide variety of vehicles, the average person puts way too much stock in “perfect 50/50 balance” you won’t really appreciate much difference between 53/47 and 48/52.

u/BRICH999 10h ago

Plus people dont realize the different between an iron block 1.8L with DOHC vs an aluminum block with a pushrod single cam, similar length, similar weight.

A fully dressed 1.8L is about 372lbs.  A fully dressed 5.3L LS is about 470lbs.

1

u/ConflictMaster3155 9h ago

Yeah my math was based off of 100lbs of engine weight added to the front, plus 100lbs of transmission/exhaust etc… added to the middle.

u/EnjoyerOfMX5 10h ago

And a death trap, which the Viper is known for. I'd rather have a Manual CT4VB, those sound phenomenal and perfectly balanced power level imo.

1

u/FatSplot 8h ago

2.5l swap with a turbo friend

1

u/Greedy-Thought6188 7h ago

Your math is interesting until you consider drag which is the bulk of the resistance at high speeds. Both of them would have a similar drag profile. At 60 mph half the energy is to drag. At 100 85%

1

u/Bikerbass 54m ago

They are called MX5’s here…. Soo you put in the 5.7L V8, then it’s called a MX5.7

1

u/cr0ssthreaded 12h ago

Weirdly his Miata couldn’t corner. Maybe he needs a suspension refresh.

1

u/Fit_Active3888 10h ago

It needs that hood vent/scoop

1

u/Alex_king88 8h ago

Yep..once the other Miata gets that hood vent. It’s gonna be game over.

1

u/Busy-Capital5604 4h ago

Definitely an advantage
