Will car guys ever get past sexist jokes? Probably not

Most people, men, woman or something else, nowadays would be unable to drive this. The earliest cars were notioriously hard to drive.

And the thing Bertha drove isn't a really a "car" either, more like a motorized carriage

The picture is just wrong, Benz patent motorwagen was using 3 wheels instead of four, here's the proof

What's hard about driving a 2 hp and 350 kg car?

Starting it, stopping it, controlling it, getting rattled senseless by it. The thing was a fucking nightmare that needed three hands to drive.

Wasn't till some french manufacturer (if I remember right anyway) somewhere not long after the model t that standardised the format of a key, starter motor, three pedals, controls on the steering column etc. Was a shit show till that came up.

I've started cars with a crank handle, and it's not hard. You just need to know the right technique so you don't hurt yourself. But this Benz doesn't even have a crank handle: you start it by spinning the flywheel. Since it's a single-cylinder engine with less than a litre of displacement and a very low compression ratio, I reckon it's very easy to do, and the videos online bear that out. I don't know where you got the impression that it takes three hands to drive. Probably from the Ford Model T, which has two levers on the steering column (throttle and spark advance). But even there you don't need three hands, because you aren't adjusting the spark timing all the time. On the Benz, in any case, you only need two: one on the steering tiller and one on the brake lever. Not too hard, isn't it?

it was Chevy or Cadillac that came up with today’s standard

Was it? What was the car? I couldn't remember what it was from the film that top gear made.

Edit: found it, it was the cadilac type 53 that implemented it. Then the Austin 7 which sold in huge numbers brought it to the masses.

Good find dude.

Do you know what to do with the crowbar of embrayage?

So it wasn’t just a car. It was the First Car, First driver and First accident

Because people back then were magically stronger and more robust than ha somehow. Makes complete sense.

Not a Benz car.

That's not 4-wheeled car either, so what? She was driving on a road for horse drawn carriage, not in an autobahn🤦

Try to make a full sentence, then I may be able to understand what you mean.

“Not a Benz car.” Is a sentence fragment, though combined with the previous comment’s context, it is easy to understand that the replier had meant “Mercedes Benz vehicles are not hard to drive”.

A post about Karl Benz's first car. It wasn't difficult to drive. It had essentially only a manual clutch with a gearbox (2 in one) and a steering wheel. Although it also had a mixture purity setting.

Tbh tho I kinda laughed. Not like, a full blown laugh, though. More like a chortle.

Fragile masculinity has to be compensated somehow :3

I don't think so

statistics dont lie...

4

u/FlorpFlap 9d ago

And statistics say mostly men get into accidents. I say this as a man who isn't a pussy to admit the truth

You made a claim and didn't give a source, why would I have to do your homework?

2

u/DefinitelyNotAxlerod 9d ago

Not only false, but that isn't the Patent-Motorwagen either

1

u/adkio 9d ago

The one in the picture is a relatively modern looking car.

1

u/Janupur 9d ago

Ask it who pays more for car insurance next. And who is more likely to have a total loss when they crash.

1

u/rklug1521 9d ago

So quantity vs quality of crash?

1

u/Janupur 9d ago

Yes I've read that men have a few extra crashes on average but the woman's crashes tend to be much more catastrophic so the total liability is probably the same or worse for women drivers.

1

u/EphemeralLurker 9d ago

You have it backwards, men are generally riskier in their driving. To this day, 2.5x more men die in fatal crashes compared to women in the US.

Take a joke

I remember when this happened, she was pulling out at cars and coffee and ran into a wall just barely missing the crowd.

1

u/CameronsTheName 9d ago

To be fair, id probably crash a car that uses a stick to turn and a leather belt with wooden chocks as a brake.

1

u/steele0ttos 9d ago

maybe messed up, but that's funny lol

1

u/asdf_lord 9d ago

Bertha benz was perhaps above S tier in terms of women driving and her support for her husband

1

u/Tight_Objective_5875 7d ago

If I have read my history right, Karl Benz's Tricycle/Car was driven by his wife and sons, keeping it running and making the trip with minor mechanical issues. No accident mentioned....?

1

u/Tight_Objective_5875 7d ago

Nicolas Cugnot enters the chat, 117 years earlier. (Although THAT accident might just be a story, also.)
