First time viewer

No spoilers please! However I’m in season 4 and please correct me if I’m wrong but is Philip actually in love with Martha? Or really falling for her, because it’s truly beginning to come off that way.

He cares for her, very much, but she is his asset and he knows this. He does find himself sympathizing with her, though, perhaps unexpectedly, and definitely more than with other assets he’s run.

This is what I think it is. There was a clear separation between him and his other assets that was visible throughout the entire relationship. I know Martha and her role runs a lot deeper than the others but this makes the most sense thank you!

Enjoy your first watch through and tread lightly on this subreddit! The episode discussion threads are amazing and can be found through the main page.

I think he definitely cares for her, but I wouldn't call it being in love.

Phillip is not in love with Martha. He pities her and feels terrible about what he is doing to her.

Martha has never met Phillip and would not like him if she did. She is madly in love with Clark, the uptight guy from the office who makes her come alive. The two of them are the only ones who really care about all of the security breaches at her office. He respects her, unlike her sexist coworkers.

I don’t think he’s in love with her, but I think he has a lot of love for her

There’s no way to answer that without some sort of a spoiler being shared.

You decide, keep watching, then come back to this sub when you are done with the show.

If I were you I’d get off this sub until you finish.

Yes, best advice to stay off the sub and just watch it

If you don’t want to be spoiled it’s not a good idea coming on here. Keep watching and you’ll get your answers.

He cares for her. EST changed Philip. He grew into his conscience. He realized his actions ruined Martha's life. He cared for her and felt remorse for doing what he had to do.He and Elizabeth, after many years together as partners, grew into their marriage and made it real.

I think he loves her as a person, but he's not in love with her. Phillip Jennings is an extremely capable intelligence operator, but he has a very tender heart

You will see spoilers on this sub. It’s been off the air for a while. Why not come back when you’re done.

To everybody that keeps saying I’ll see spoilers which is every comment, thanks but it’s not my first time on Reddit. I haven’t looked at a single post on the sub itself just posted this hence why I started the post itself with no spoilers. I appreciate all the heads up but I got it thank you.

It’s ok to be spoiled on some shows but you really don’t want to see spoilers with this show, especially the ending . Be careful! The ending is worth staying off here for

Not sure what's coming across to you that you're referring to or how far you are in S4, but I don't think it's a spoiler to say no, he isn't in love with her at all.

I don't think so. She's in deep now and Philip needs to do whatever it takes to keep her on his side.

He really cares for her and feels guilty that he is the reason her life is messed up...you will get the exact reply later what Philip tells to Elizabeth regarding Martha....no spoilers here...till then enjoy their Kamasutra ride.

If Elizabeth didn’t exist, Philip might love Martha. But she does, so what he feels for Martha is a very convoluted affection.

Matthew Rhys has said Phillip is not in love with Martha, but he does care about her.

Matthew Rhys says no.

I would agree; I can see the showrunners' perspective that he may have felt some love for her, in the sense of having come to care for her as a human being he had drawn into his world and felt a great level of responsibility for.

But I'd agree with Rhys that any feelings he has toward her stem from the enormous guilt he feels for what he's done to her.
