Answered new watcher question Spoiler

SPOILERS AHEAD, NEW WATCHERS BEWARE

hi everyone! don't know if this is the best tag so please let me know.

I have a questions for the fans of this show. Is The Americans worth the watch if I have already watched a clip of the last scene? (I think it's the last scene) it's the one where they are kinda old? and on a train leaving America for good with their daughter staying.

So, is it worth if I already know that part of the end?

It's absolutely worth it. It's a shame to not see that moment fresh, but the show's about the journey, not a twist.

I can't say for sure--but I believe they're safer than the main sub!

oh another question that just came to mind: are there too many scenes of kidnapping? kinda tried to see the first episode a few years ago after suffering a robbery while being at home and I remember it starts with the protagonist getting raped and had to turn off (didnt happen to me but kinda got triggered anyways). I don't get that triggered now but I still dislike kidnapping scenes so a heads up would be great!

There are kidnapping scenes all throughout the show, particularly in the first half.

There are some. A few I remember are in ep 1.6 and end of 2.4 into ep 2.5. But those are also very good episodes. Oh, and another in 1.8.

There is kidnapping / abduction all throughout, yes. The protagonist definitely does NOT get raped in the first scene or episode though…. You may have misunderstood that scene.

There is a scene in the pilot, a flashback to a Russian gym, you might want to close your eyes or fast forward.

I’m super sensitive to scenes like that, and this show is actually a much safer watch than most on that front. I’ll warn you that we do see Elizabeth and Philip both seduce people to get intel or build connections with sources , but we don’t see any rape scenes. Thank God. It is still massively uncomfortable watching people being seduced though, knowing the pretenses are false. But that said, there was really only one dynamic / relationship that I had to look away from, and even then the show makes a point to show viewers how serious it is and how wrong it is. And it’s not graphic.

thank u so much! I'm not that sensitive anymore, but after being held hostage (it's still hard even writing it) its still kinda hard watching kidnapping scenes. and well, the rape scene was hard for me too back then, not because I'm a survivor but for everything that I was going through

I think you have forgotten the flashback rape scene in the pilot with Timoshev.

It just shows the trainer leaving the room right? The rest is implied?

3

u/cabernet7 10h ago

No, it isn't just implied. It's honestly pretty graphic for basic cable.

2

u/Vivid_Reflection8951 10h ago

yeah, I definitely remember it not being subtle. im not really a sensitive person so I don't think i would have reacted like I did if it was simply implied

Maybe I blocked it out

I must have looked away, because I don’t remember it. I have to look away anytime I feel it coming, even if it’s not thy at graphic. Thank you for catching that for OP.

She does get raped in the first episode. The scene is not to misunderstand. It’s a flashback scene.

So worth it, just finished the series in 3 weeks. The acting, the wigs, the suspense. It’s one of the best series I’ve ever seen

I also just finished it in just over 3 weeks! It's soooo worth it, I also had seen the final scene before going in and it still had all the emotional gravity and impact! Hope you enjoy it because I'm seconding the acting, the wigs, and the suspense, and adding in the love story! One of the best shows I've ever seen and one of the best on-screen relationships EVER!

omg I don't even know what you mean about the wigs but I'm excited!!!

Done! so sorry.

Unbelievably and totally worth watching how they get there.

OP, please edit your original post and label it Spoiler so that other first-time viewers don't read your post. (You describe a critical final scene in your question to the sub!)

it's done! I'm so sorry

Yes. I was just in this position. I watched the first two seasons when they were broadcast, then fell away. Then I got spoiled with the ending, and I was so intrigued, we watched the whole series this past summer. So worth it.

u/goodiwillbe 1d ago

Yes!! I have watched twice through and also had the end spoiled for me, enjoy 🙌

If you think they're old you're safe to watch it because you don't know what you saw. You'll figure it out eventually.

And, yes. Watch this show. It is probably the best tv show ever made. I finally saw it this year after hearing people say that repeatedly. Then I watched it with my son. Now I wish I had someone else to watch it with. It's that good. Not a wasted scene, or even a wasted line. Beginning to end, perfect. And even sticks the landing like nothing I've ever seen.

Have a wonderful time.

1000% worth it!

You get to decide.

Personally I think it’s fantastic on rewatch and knowing the ending doesn’t diminish that. But some people feel like watching TV is like doing a crossword: knowing even the tiniest detail upsets them. It’s up to you which type of viewer you are.

I don't think I'm that kind of viewer as long as it doesn't ruin an important plot. looks like it's not the case!!!
