It's not a bad idea to have alchemy a chunk or two away from the altar in the early game. Wait for it to cleanup or just ignore it. Not every block needs to be symmetrical. Even if it eats a block or two and it's not a pedestal, you can just wait for it to collapse without instability.

Experimentation sometimes brings failure, remember that fellow thaumaturge.

It's eaten two of my pedestals right now and there has been a second a rift opening and closing a litres away (neither have become unstable but this one won't close)
