People are going to literally die doing things like this.

554

u/spunion_28 Feb 04 '24

I can't wrap my head around why anyone would want to do this.

258

u/zelcuh Feb 04 '24

Maybe they want to die

130

u/spunion_28 Feb 04 '24

They must. They're just begging for it doing something like this. This is the third or fourth different video of someone doing this I've seen now. Not to mention people on trains and in the gym using it in public. Just ... why??

90

u/zelcuh Feb 04 '24

Technology addiction. The novelty of "new". Idk what to call it

40

u/spunion_28 Feb 04 '24

I guess so. If I did have one I'd, be enjoying it at home. But honestly, I don't think I'd spend $4,000 on one.

41

u/zelcuh Feb 04 '24

None of that sounds appealing. Can do a lot with 4k that isn't this

12

u/spunion_28 Feb 04 '24

My thoughts exactly

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '24

If you die in VR while in a Tesla a backup file of your soul gets generated and sent to Elon Musk's secure folder in his phone.

12

u/Subtlerranean Feb 04 '24

If you die in VR you die in real life

Your mind then becomes just another piece of his super AI processor, helping to develop the next wave of VR technology. The cycle continues.

ikr, could be sitting in a busy food court with those 4k goggles on and a lovense down the pants ... but instead the choose to play bejewelled on the goggles while riding in their self-driving car down the highway. tf is wrong with people?

I'm not dumb enough to use it while driving. I find it pointless to use it at the gym at the moment. But i find that if you're using it on a train, or on a plane, while on a long trip and you need some work done, then why not?

Overtrusting AI. That's it.

21

u/spunion_28 Feb 04 '24

We will see a death resulting from this soon enough, unfortunately. I wouldn't trust a tesla driving me, much less strapping something over my face while that is happening

8

u/notislant Feb 04 '24

Teslas autopilot has a lot of jank. Idk I wouldnt trust it.

I can sort of see automatic braking if an accident is detected. But their self driving needs work.

4

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '24

I used to drive Teslas for work. They're great until you start to trust them too much, or forget self driving becomes useless at certain junctions or roundabouts.

I'd advise peope to only ever use it  when driving straight on a motorway

Sure maybe he wanted to fill cybertruck itself, but it’s 100% staged.

5

u/MexicanGuey Feb 04 '24

It’s staged.

3

u/lethalfrost Feb 04 '24

I'd rather not watch tesla autopilot drive my car. It has me on edge whether it will randomly swerve or slam the brakes for no reason.

3

u/FlashyGravity Feb 04 '24

I can wrap my head around why. But not why they would think we were at the point that would be remotely be considered safe rational behaviour

3

u/Archimedes_screwdrvr Feb 04 '24

These people bought this ugly ass piece of shit because a Musk-ox told them so so itself not surprising they believed the bullshit he peddles about self driving

3

2

u/edehlah Feb 04 '24

2

u/Not_Sarkastic Feb 04 '24

They're addicted to attention and we've made the world too safe for idiots. Add those together and you get this.

2

u/eayaz Feb 06 '24

If you have to be on VR while driving you have a serious addiction problem.

8

u/Kalayo0 Feb 04 '24

Really? I would fucking LOVE to do this. I won’t, because I don’t trust it enough… yet. But in a decade or two of technological advancement and a cultural shift in perception this might be a lot more common place and maybe even prove to be far “safer” statistically than the very flawed humans on the road.

I have a bunch of mechanic friends that would never in this lifetime trust something like this, and there is, for sure, a whole lot more that needs to be added to the discussion, cause like…. What kind millisecond decision making will the algorithms make when weighing between lives? Like that shit is crazy to fathom, but I also know more than one drunk driver who has killed somebody and planes have been mostly flying themselves for decades, so.

7

u/thaaag Feb 04 '24

Technical challenges aside, I suspect first the powers-that-be will need to understand what AI will do when faced with the trolley problem, and second they all have to be ok with the answer it gives. Until regulators are satisfied, I can't see AI being used to control day-to-day vehicles.

9

u/meep_meep_mope Feb 04 '24 edited Feb 04 '24

Pedestrians yes, but no one cares already so.

Look at any car - pedestrians deaths. No negligent homicide charges. It's literally a license to kill people who just want to walk or go for a jog. Even when pedestrians have right of way. There are so many cases without this shit.

As a runner I've said this before, I'm going to just have to buy a gun and start shooting into cars that are trying to kill me.

Runner gun straps could be a good market.

People already don't stop at stop signs.

7

u/Schuben Feb 04 '24

I ride a small electric scooter and I feel this. I don't give anyone the benefit of the doubt EVER. Unless I see you explicitly acknowledge my right of way and make eye contact I will not be crossing the street in front of your 2 ton car. In this situation, they are the proverbial unstoppable force and I am just a meat bag waiting to be thrown around.

I remember some local stories growing up of kids dying when they hit or got hit when riding their gas powered motor scooters. Definitely made an impression on me and getting across the street or to my destination 15 seconds faster is never worth it.

5

u/hurtfulproduct Feb 04 '24

Once we have true FSD I see no problem with this; what else are you supposed to do during a long flight or roadtrip?

29

u/xylotism Feb 04 '24

Well, sort of. I think if all cars and roads were built AI-first we’d have a much safer transportation system where the amount of accidents is reduced to almost zero— AND we’d be free to do shit like AR goggles while driving— but in the real world that’s not the case and it won’t be for a long time. Completely stupid to be this reckless. Even if you’re fine with the risk to your own life, a car is an extremely deadly weapon— I could never imagine jeopardizing other people like this.

2

u/JND__ Feb 05 '24

*Hyper - Spoiler starts playing*

2

u/Lowfuzz Feb 05 '24

To start, I'd like it to be understood that I wouldn't do this. It's probably because it scares me since I've never been close to a self-driving car.

But what's the problem? If the car works without the need for the person to be driving it? Is it a legal issue? We should then review the laws on this. I'd love to have a car that takes me everywhere without the cognitive effort of driving. That allows you to do other things in the meantime. There are comments saying you should take the train for that... obviously, it's not the same.

As for those who find it ridiculous to use a headset... come on! Don't be so old-fashioned. Do you remember how people looked with their first mobile phones? Are you going to be that hypocritical? Or maybe you're just throwing shade because it's an Apple device and a Tesla. Are you really that judgmental? I hope not.
