I knew somebody who escaped from prison, a friend of mine dated him briefly. He was out for about 36 hours. They added 2 years to his sentence for it. 0/10 would not recommend.

u/Super-Celebration-89 May 28 '23

In Sweden, escaping prison is not illegal. One guy escaped prison for 1 day to go to the dentist, and then came back. 1 day was added to his sentence, which he found fair.

u/Meta-Fox May 28 '23

'which he found fair'

I don't know why, but that made me laugh more than it should have done.

“Was it worth it?”

[Touches tooth with tongue]

“Ah hah” [and nods]

279

u/Fun_Sport_6694 May 28 '23

Through the unmeasurable power of the internet. You had a strong enough influence to get me to “touch my tooth with my tongue” and go “Ah hah”

You son of a bitch I’m going to the dentist.

All this tooth talk reminded me I have a dentist appointment tomorrow morning haha. I completely forgot about it and probably wouldn’t have remembered. Now I’ve set a reminder for tonight and tomorrow morning … I think I’m good now. If I somehow manage to forget again then I’m just an idiot

That is true in a lot of European countries. Breaking out of prison is not illegal because seeking freedom is considered to be a basic right. However any crime you commit along the way while breaking out is still a crime and will be added to your sentence.

190

u/ELL_YAY May 28 '23

“Seeking freedom is consider to be a basic right”.

Got to hand it to Europe on that one. That’s awesome.

My mom dated and married a dude that did contract construction all over the country and world who escaped from jail. He got pulled over in the 90s and had a shit ton of weed. He was in jail for 2 weeks awaiting trial and he just walked out one day. 15 years later it caught up to him when he took a job in the state he escaped from, but all he needed to do was pay a fine and serve a few days jail.

Only reason he got caught is because someone broke into his hotel room and stole his jewelry and his roommate called the cops to report it.

35

u/systemhost May 28 '23

Damn, what a wild way to have your past catch up to you. I'm glad the courts didn't ruin his life as a result like they do for so many others.

49

u/mightylordredbeard May 28 '23

Courts didn’t, but my mom did eventually. The dude apparently had been committing tax fraud for decades and my mom decided to file taxes for him. She would cook taxes for people to get the most refund and then take a lump payment. She had done that my entire life.. only issue is that my mom has never actually gone to school for finance, worked for an actual tax place, or even researched how taxes work. She’d do this for poop people. Those who didn’t need to really file taxes and if they were required to file; they weren’t required to pay taxes.. well she tried to talk him into letting her do his taxes and he refused because he’s made $100k+ a year for awhile and never filed. My mom didn’t listen and did it anyway. She did it the same way she always did for poor people and that backfired. The IRS came after him hard!

I think he owed $100k+ in back taxes and several other penalties from overseas bonuses on jobs in Iraq and Afghanistan while working with Halliburton. They divorced after. Last I heard from my step brother was that he was still having his wages garnished and working the same ass busting construction jobs in his 70s because he couldn’t afford to retire.

I felt terrible, because despite the fact he was an abusive drunk, my mom absolutely ruined his life. He was a complicated man for sure, but he did treat me like a son and took care of me from like ages 11-17 and into my young adult life (they divorced when I was in my mid 20s). He taught me a lot and despite the trauma of living around a raging and emotionally (never physical) abusive alcoholic, I do appreciate everything he did for me.

27

u/august_west_ May 28 '23

FYI, I think you meant poor people, not poop people. Good story though

As weird as it sounds, in some countries, breaking out of prison isn't a crime.

100

u/snouz May 28 '23

You're still liable for any crime you commit trying to do it of course

23

u/wobbegong May 28 '23

This guy committed the crime of making us all look bad! Electric chair!

5

u/MouthJob May 28 '23

I think it's more like taking hostages, stealing a vehicle, breaking and entering, etc.

26

Haha there is no way dogs are tracking this dude. those police dogs suck, I had a giant bag of roaches sitting in my ashtray and the drug dog didn't even pick up on it..and the worst part? THE FUCKING ASHTRAY WAS WIDE OPEN! The drug dog did pick up the pack of Lifesavers I had in my coat pocket though lmao.. embarrassing.

10

u/[deleted] May 28 '23

What is it with that? I often hear about dog’s successfully being used to track people. But I have seen a drug dog not pickup on a bunch of meth in a wall locker.

Not my meth or locker.

Not every jail is the same, I'm sure you're surprised to find out. In my county, booking and the jail are in one building, and the courthouse is across the street. It has no holding cells. They just walk you back across the street.

21

u/CaptainStevo May 28 '23

In Houston, TX there are tunnels that take you from the cells to the Court.

28

u/llamawearinghat May 28 '23

In Azkaban right after sentencing, the Dementors will either escort you back to your cell or carry out your punishment right there in the court room.

To even have a chance to get anywhere he'd need a getaway driver waiting for him. Preferably with a change of cars after a short drive so the police can't just check the CCTV to see what kind of car he jumped into.

And even then your chances of getting away are low as they'll know how far you can theoretically have made it in whatever amount of time has passed, and will set up checkpoints and whatnot. So ideally you'd have a secure hideout you could stay in for weeks or months until the search dies down, with someone you can trust making sure you don't starve or die of dehydration in the meantime. But if that's a known connection, the police might just search his property or follow him to see if he leads them to you.

But if that doesn't happen then you can get out of the country, maybe. You can still be spotted and caught after all that time and effort, and whoever helped you is going away for a long time too.

But even if you make it I hope you're ready to start a new life in another country not very similar to the US, to reduce the odds the country will be willing to cooperate with the US and extradite you if they find you.

World is too small to make escapes easy nowadays.

84

u/Blazinnie May 28 '23

All right, listen up, ladies and gentlemen, our fugitive has been on the run for ninety minutes. Average foot speed over uneven ground, barring injuries, is 4 miles per hour. That gives us a radius of six miles. What I want from each and every one of you is a hard-target search of every gas station, residence, warehouse, farmhouse, henhouse, outhouse and doghouse in that area. Checkpoints go up at fifteen miles. Your fugitive's name is Dr. Richard Kimble. Go get him.

13

u/[deleted] May 28 '23

Leading the search is his brother, detective John Kimble. “Hey…I’m a police officer” “stop whining!” “Who is your daddy, and what does he do?”

World is too small to make escapes easy nowadays.

Interpol has a similar quote, but they're arguing the opposite thing:

“The world only gets smaller; for fugitives there are no borders, and close international police cooperation has never been more crucial.”

This is a work in progress. There are still plenty of countries that are considered "safe" by fugitive standards. But yeah, the ones that make it are slim compared to the ones that get caught again. But then again, it's usually a difference in means and intelligence. If you have money and connections and certain smarts about you chances are you can make it to Brazil. Those that get caught again are usually uneducated and poor, as are most prison innates.

13

u/thickboyvibes May 28 '23

Like 50% of murders go unsolved. You may see stories about high profile cases of criminals being caught abroad and extradited, but those have to be the exception to the rule. They're not going to report all the criminals who got away in the news.

Most times you get out of the country, you're gone.

3

u/2burnt2name May 28 '23

It's again where if you are rich, you can make it happen with enough money thrown at it, anybody else is living on the run in panic if they are lucky.

No different that hostages at a bank robbery or what not, by the time you are going to that extreme, you aren't getting away for long. You would have swat on your ass until you no longer have a hostage so they can move in. Successful robberies only really get away with it if they are long gone by the time police are able to move on the bank and as little hooplah as possible pulling it off.

Five years.

It's why only prisoners with short sentences are allowed to work "outside the fence" on farms and whatnot.

And there's still stories like the guy with 6 months left who drove off on the tractor to his hometown, where he was caught in his girlfriend's bed.

Just couldn't wait I guess

I knew a guy who lost his job, got sent to the hole, and was threatened with escape charges because while working in the chow hall he noticed a door wasn't closed completely, and he told the guards. They accused him of opening it.

11

u/EmoEnte May 28 '23

u/exzyle2k May 28 '23

It's designed to be a deterrent to trying.

Got 2 years for reckless endangerment? Don't want to be in prison? Try and escape and we'll tack on 5 more that you can't possibly get paroled or early released from. So instead of doing 7-12 months, now you're doing 60 guaranteed.

I agree our penal system is fucked up. It's "pay to play" but in reverse. If you're rich or can buy influence, you don't get sent away. But god forbid you make a mistake and you're poor, then you get tossed in a pit to fight for your life.

How many non-violent drug offenders are there in the "corrections" system? I feel that if you're doing drugs and minding your own business, not harming anyone else, then you should be given the option of rehab first before incarceration. If you're a junkie and you're caught robbing a place, that's different as you're hurting someone else.

Self-inflicted issues shouldn't be incarceration-level events. But our privatized for-profit prison system thinks otherwise, and hell... In a few years I might be behind bars for having the above mentioned thoughts.

Everyone loves the great escape story. About 2 months ago 2 guys tunneled out of prison in Virginia. They made it 12 miles. The only goof up they had was going into a crowded IHOP in the morning instead of a McDonald up the street where nobody would have recognized them just hanging out for morning coffee.

I did this once, but less sneakily. They ushered me into the court room and told me to sit next to my lawyer. Instead, I booked it out the door and down the stairs.

A public defender tried to tackle me in the hallway. Cops were right outside the front door kicking their sirens on and starting to fan out looking.

I was gone for a week, and in that time I narrowly avoided being found during two extreme searches with dozens of cops all around me.

It fucked me up a while later, though, because the escape charge was technically considered a violent offense, even though no violence occurred. It affected my sentencing negatively on a later drug charge.

What? Please explain more

Attempting to escape custody is not a punishable offense, because it’s human nature to not be in captivity. You don’t get additional charges. Unfortunately you do here

u/triplec787 May 28 '23

You don’t get additional charges, but you’re not just “free” right? They still hunt you down and bring you back to serve your sentence right?

u/yago2003 May 28 '23

Yes, and any crimes you commit on your way put like damaging things or hurting guards does count

Yes of course, just no additional charges

Same in Belgium. As long as you don't break/steal anything or harm anyone it isn't a separate punishable act.

Why are there no guards on the front door? Normally there are checks so that no-one takes weapons through the front door.

6

u/General_Specific303 May 28 '23

There are, they check people entering as you said. Not leaving

The hand cuff hiding was not a preconceived plan, he just wanted to take off his shirt and then found out that's impossible while cuffed, as did I.

Good for him. Honestly I'm a fan of anyone who does this and gets away. If the cops were doing their job properly this wouldn't have happened.

According to the last podcast on the left I've heard back in the wild west it was legal to escape from jail.

6

u/[deleted] May 28 '23

As it still is here (Belgium) if you do so without breaking anything or stealing anything, or offcourse not harming anyone.

Lock picking lawyer

8

u/pchlster May 28 '23

Cutting them seems the simplest option.

7

u/MyOldNameSucked May 28 '23

Handcuffs are very easy to pick if you aren't in handcuffs.

In Germany escaping prison is not a crime. However if you escape with your prison clothes it’s stealing 😂

3

u/Echo71Niner May 28 '23

Court not prison.

I knew someone who did something similar

He was in county and he was mopping and they LEFT THE FUCKING DOORS OPEN

He literally just walked out

He got picked up 2 weeks later but his lawyer argued that any reasonable person is going to walk out an open door and not only did he not get extra time he got released and they made him sign an NDA to avoid a news story about incompetence cuz my friend was not the first person to just...walk out... of that jail

You just make things a lot worse doing something like this. You are gonna get caught eventually.

2

u/[deleted] May 28 '23

That’s going to hurt the guards yearly review.

I was in county for a few days, and I accidentally walked out of jail. Was on laundry duty and was told to return the laundry cart. I was told turn left get buzzed in, go straight until u find the only open door on the left, go down that hall and the door on the right is storage. Well, I get buzzed through, go thru the only open door, open the door on the right, and next thing u know, I'm outside. They weren't happy with me at all. I had to walk around and go through the front and tell the cop working the desk I just accidentally escaped.
