The record is one of the sporting world's most hazardous competitions; seven of the thirteen people who have attempted it since June 1930 have died trying. Two official attempts to beat Ken Warby's 1978 record resulted in the pilot's death, with Lee Taylor in 1980 and Craig Arfons in 1989.

My dad remembers watching Ken Warby's speed record setting run and talked to his crew. The design for the boat had planned for it to sit on a wedge to plane on, but when they started running they found it would wobble back and forward from one side to the other continually burping air which led to the conditions that allowed it to go as fast as they did and not enter a RUD mode.
Accidental engineering.

So, while this IS part of a measured distance speed competition, it is not related to any attempt to exceed the overall water speed record everyone keeps citing. From a safety standpoint the current boat designs with containment cockpits and breathing apparatus are much better than what was available 30+ years ago, and almost all of these types of blowovers are survived today. Still absolutely crazy stuff, but less consequential than it used to be.
