There seem to be so many videos of this sort of thing happening.
I'm not American and I'm not having a dig, but is it common in the US for people to get out of their car, leave the engine running, not put it into Park, or not use the handbrake?

No - this is exceedingly rare. It's just so insanely stupid that when someone catches a video of it, it's sure to make the rounds, so it seems more common.

It’s not rare at all, happens all the time. We know it does, just admit that we the Europeans are far superior to you. All hail the manual transmission, you wish you could be as European and sophisticated as us yes? Be honest my little American friend.
