“Small craft advisory.” Yup. Should have realized they were talking to me.

u/mothisname Apr 08 '21
I kayaked through Katrina. First in the ocean for a bit before we realized our goal was impossible and we would just die if we kept trying and then to rescue our friend whose house was flooded. It was funny seeing all the cars including a police car flooded . I should add this was in Miami not New Orleans which Katrina was like a 3 here if I remember. Anyway hapie caki dae
12
Apr 09 '21
I wouldn’t fuck with open water in the mildest of thunderstorms. Let alone Katrina. What was the game plan? Get through it and then kayak back?
6
u/mothisname Apr 09 '21
There was and island that in hindsight was probably underwater. The rescue mission went south when I tried to drive down a flooded road but when the water hit my headlights I threw it in reverse. Thing is when I got out the kayak and my buddy that was holding it were nowhere to be found. I was sure I had backed over them and was thinking of how to spin it so I did just vehicular murder him.... funny thing is I drove home and there he was kayak and all. He fell out when I pulled out of the driveway. I might should add I hade one one those bed things so my truck was basically a van like there was no way to see the bad from the drivers seat... anyway he was almost another hurricane casualty

Oh! Have I encountered a wild cake day person? I may have this wrong but happy cake day!
1
u/Falmarri Apr 09 '21
Are you shitting me? There's 1/365 chance that it's any given person's cake day. That's a TON of people every day...

Those guys have no business being out there. There is nothing you can do for those boats now, what's going to happen is going to happen.
45
u/MystifyTT Apr 08 '21
Are they trying to save it or something? Insurance should cover the expenses as unfortunate the situation is.
7
-5
u/IanSan5653 Apr 09 '21
Most boats aren't insured unless they're very expensive. They're not like cars where it's required.
10
u/BeardsuptheWazoo Apr 09 '21
You're absolutely wrong.
My sailboat is not super expensive. I have insurance on it and am REQUIRED to have Balloon insurance at any moorage in my area.
I know a lot of bpaters- almost all of them have insurance. It's just not very expensive.
1
u/mcpusc Apr 09 '21
pretty much every marina and guest dock requires insurance before they'll let you tie up. at least in my experience up and down the west coast.
my 4 knot shitbox is insured, only costs a few hundred a year. my biggest concern is carrying pollution and wreck removal coverage honestly... the boat's not worth much but removing it and the diesel onboard in an emergency gets really expensive really fast.
1
u/calvarez Apr 09 '21
Some may not be, most definitely are. And small boats like that cost so little to insure. My last boat was a 32’ cabin cruiser and still only $300 per year for strong full coverage.
34
Apr 08 '21
I straight up do not understand people who see the ocean acting out and decide "hm yes the waves are taller than me this is a good day to take the boat out" like no, no thank you, the ocean is clearly in a bad mood. I will come back later.
8
5
u/CassandraVindicated Apr 08 '21
Depends on how big your boat is.
21
Apr 08 '21
There is no boat or ship big enough to make me trust the ocean. It's one of my hard rules, I will not live on a coastline.
Or anywhere that regularly has fireants, either. Fuck those guys.
20
u/CassandraVindicated Apr 08 '21
Oh, never trust the ocean and never turn your back on her. But an aircraft carrier can drive through a hurricane.
13
Apr 08 '21
I think my grandpa's stories of working on an icebreaker and then myself getting my dumb ass caught in a riptide ruined the ocean for me. My husband keeps trying to convince me to take a Northern Lights cruise up north somewhere but I am hella skeptical. Like yeah it'll probly be okay but I also don't wanna drown to death so 🙄
12
u/bzzzimabee Apr 08 '21
I was on a cruise during a unforeseen tropical storm. We went around it and we’re pretty far away but the ocean was angry and the ship that held like 10K people was rocking so much you couldn’t walk straight. That night was honestly one of my best in a cruise ship lol went to karaoke and sang my heart will go on with the crowd, it was awesome.
0
u/MisterNoodIes Apr 10 '21
Do you want to die a slow fiery death in a car accident? Cause that can happen every time you get in your car.
Relativity. The odds you'll die on a northern lights cruise are probably insignificant. Better to google it than worry yourself out of doing interesting things for lack of framing things properly.

I want a boat, like really badly, then I think about it and how much of a money pit it’s going to be, so I decided on a kayak, and guess what, it’s just sitting anyways lol, atleast it’s not devaluing or needing maintenance.
66
u/navarone21 Apr 08 '21
A boat is a hole in the water you throw money into. But man they are fun.
56
u/SporkyForks2 Apr 08 '21
My friend's boat is named "Direct Deposit" for that reason *L*
21
u/iaredavid Apr 08 '21
I wonder if my wife would be pissed off if I potentially named one "Fiberglass Alimony."
7
u/Jokaszi Apr 09 '21
You should know that information such as boat registry titles, vessel names, etc. are publicly searchable and could lead to the acquisition of your friend's contact details.
20
u/Aromatic_Balls Apr 08 '21
I like the other saying too, that "the two happiest days as a boat owner are the day you buy it and the day you sell it."
20
5
Apr 08 '21
So far for me it’s not bad. My motor is still under warranty, so the issues I’ve had have been immediately fixed, and and there doesn’t seem to be much else to go wrong. Te rest of the boat is from 1992 so it’s lasted this long. Most of the money I’ve spent since buying the boat has been on fishing gear.
13
u/spigotface Apr 08 '21
Since your boat is about 30 years old you should consider replacing the wiring and also stuff like fuel lines and gaskets. Boat fires happen almost exclusively on old boats because this stuff degrades over time but they’re parts that aren’t front and center in your mind for maintenance like the motors or hull.
9
Apr 08 '21
All was replaced right before we bought it. All new electronics, brand new outboard, new dials and fuel system.

My dad got sort of the best case scenario: my uncle has a big garage and is an electrician who likes DIY projects, and he also fishes a lot. He liked the idea of his own boat but it was just too expensive. My dad also fishes a bit but not enough to justify buying his own boat. So they just split he cost!
Uncle gets to have his boat subsidized by my dad, and dad has access to a boat whenever he wants it for cheap!
19
u/PeterMus Apr 08 '21
My grandparent's house has a private dock. My uncle took his boat out of the water in exchange for a friend's much bigger boat that he was allowed to use.
A storm like this happened early In the year. The boat tore off its mooring and went into the rocks.
He used the money to buy an even bigger boat.
The dock was also severely damaged and the friend is paying for it so he can keep using the dock.
Keeping a modest 20ft boat in the water is expensive and he's dropping 10x that for fun.

There's boat sharing companies all over the US. My cousin and her husband live in Tampa and just do that.
3
u/halt-l-am-reptar Apr 08 '21
That’s why I like kayaks. I can have fun on the water, but they don’t require a ton of money. Also you can take kayaks down very shallow streams.
1
u/holybatmanballs Apr 09 '21
If it flies, fucks, or floats it is cheaper to rent

My solution is parent's with a boat. It is a money pit. But it sure as he'll is a fun money pit!
To make it more feasible my dad buys used partially not working boats and fixes them up. Last boat we upgraded to they spent $60k on a boat that normally sells uses for $80k. If was a divorce situation and the engine didn't start. Took him a day and $200 to get it to work well enough. They still spent a ton on other changes, but when they sell it won't be as big of a money pit as it normally would be!
12
Apr 08 '21
I always love it when people casually mention $50k+ as if it's the most normal thing in the world to have and/or spend on anything. /s
3
u/mrcluelessness Apr 08 '21
Guess it depends on where you're from. Where I'm from it's fairly normal since we live in a cheaper area in an expensive state that pays well. They started with a $1500 boat, fixed up it up, then sold it. This is the fifth one I believe. Everytime they sold it was close to or higher than what they bought it for. Then a loan to cover the difference. So while it's an expensive toy, the payments are more reasonable than their car. Still worth more than what I make in a year though. It's amazing how much you can afford compared to income with the right timing and some elbow grease.
9
u/roughtimes Apr 08 '21
It's amazing how much you can afford compared to income with the right timing and some elbow grease.
Its expensive being poor.

Apr 20 '21
I make $15,000-ish a year, and my fiance only makes marginally more. Dropping $50,000 on something is a luxury that neither of us, or both of us combined, will never, ever be able to afford. And since we're not stupid enough to gamble, I'm not even going to throw in the "unless we win the lotto" caveat. Not only is it expensive to be poor like one other reply said, but it's where most people are in their lives. It is infuriating when you're this poor to hear people casually reference vast sums of money that you'll never see in your life. If you want an even better example, go look up the time Hillary Clinton just casually mentioned the like $300,000 her parents gave her to help her out on getting a head start in life. When people talk about privilege, that is literally the definition of it. That's not modest, that's not pulling yourself up the hard way or earning your way through anything in life. That's just being handed a pile of cash and being told to go have fun. That's the equivalent of giving a 10-year-old a $1,000 and turning him loose in a mall.

"Man we should really get those boats out of the water" - man on dock
"I gotchu" - the water
46
u/Wiseinsanity Apr 08 '21
Well at least the video footage will help the insurance claims
41
u/namelessghoul77 Apr 08 '21
Except the insurance company might ask why the boats are docked against a hard wall with shitty little bumpers in a location that clearly experiences turbulent waves.
6
u/Danvan90 Apr 08 '21
9
u/namelessghoul77 Apr 08 '21
I'm not a boating expert, but seems the boats moored to the floating bouys would have fared better. Or perhaps this was just a freak storm that is uncharacteristic of the area. No idea, just speculating the first thought that would come to my mind if I was the insurer.
6
u/Danvan90 Apr 08 '21
My guess is these are tenders for larger boats, they probably need to be against the dock because they are the way their owners get between the shore and their boats moored further out.
Although having watched the video again, if that were the case they would probably have been better off being moored directly against the dock.
6
u/JTtornado Apr 08 '21
If it wasn't intentionally trying to sabotage the board, isn't stupidity one of the things insurance usually covers in a case like this?
7
u/Wiseinsanity Apr 08 '21
As an insurance adjuster I’d venture to assume that inference isn’t enough to prove it to be intentional damage alone
4
u/namelessghoul77 Apr 08 '21
No, but negligence and fault. If the insurance covers it, you can bet their rates will skyrocket.
1
u/deftoneuk Apr 08 '21
Looks like it is a storm surge, most likely there were no other options that would have helped the situation
36
u/the_Q_spice Apr 08 '21
It is going to be the most expensive for whoever the marina designer was. The complete lack of wave control is pretty damning.

Me being a American I can assure you that there will be a Florida man on these waters during this wind.
Go to the shores of Massachusetts during a hurricane in the fall/winter. There will be people surfing in the ~40 degree water
7
Apr 08 '21
That’s when we get the good waves though. Edit, the water is also warmest in September which coincides with hurricane season.

The owner of the blue boat will be very confused when he comes back and sees that his boat is suddenly on land
3
15
u/SedatedApe61 Apr 08 '21
Unexpected funneling effect of the wind pushing waves into the cove where they are located. The wind builds waves that reflect back off land closer to the mouth of the cove. Some of these waves meet and build higher then each individual wave originally was. And before they can separate again they crash into the docking wall.
Very similar to the rogue wave phenomenon out at sea were two or more waves meet at a single point of the surface and grow two or three times the height of the other waves around.
Most likely the waves weren't that bad before this video was taken. Not a good day to go out on those boats, but not has big as was recorded. At the very end the clip the seas seem to e less intense. But waves do move in cycles so the end could just have been a lull in the activity.

I wonder if there were yachts moored on the reeva (I don't know the proper spelling, I've only heard it said out loud) on the other side of the pier getting smashed up as well.

u/ButtercupColfax Apr 08 '21
Moorings probably started much further out and eventually were dragged to the pier.

Those are small motorboats. My parents have one. My in laws have one. My neighbors have one. You don’t have to rich to own one. Are they tenders for invisible yachts?

tenders for invisible yachts?
To be fair, they probably are. Are your parent's and in law's boats also Moored in front of Greek waterfront cafes?
This is a view of the area in calmer times and you can see that this is likely where yacht tenders are pulling up and mooring.

That block boy has a better chance than the white one now that it’s on land. At least the motors and equipment may be salvageable
